Petrified Wood: The World of Fossilized Wood
The best photographic presentation of petrified wood I have every seen. Frank Daniels' love of the subject can be seen in his work as laid out between the covers of this superb book. I totally enjoy showing non palaeontologically minded people this book when they visit. If a person is looking for a photographic presentation of petrified wood, then this would have to be the book. I heartily recommend it. Congratulations Frank on a terrific book.

The fictional topicality of Phallos Dionysus
While intending to write an appreciation of Phallos Dionysus,a novel with a serious mixture of an ethos of an ancient classical Greek culture, and wildly funny parallelisms to the modern day,I came across a quote from Tom Wolfe, the novelist that would seem to give Phallos Dionysus some topicality, albeit fictional. I quote:"Instead of striding out with a Dionysian yea-saying,as Neitzche would have put it,into the raw raucous,lust-soaked rout that throbs with amped-up octophonic tympanum all around them, our old lions had withdrawn, retreated, shielding their eyes against the light, and turned inward to such subject matter as their own little crevicei.e."the literary world" .The modern novel is dying not of obsolescence but of anoxeria. It needs food!It needs novelists with the energy and the verve to approach America like moviemakers do,with a ravenous curiosity and to go out among 270 million souls and look them in the eye"
Dionysus in the aspect of Priapus enters the modern world
This is a fascinating novel for lovers of mythology and fantasy,an unsusual and effective combination of ancient ambiance and the modern day, both joined in Bacchic joy and bacchanal in a surprise to the reader at the end when Demetrius-Dionysus returns and leaves a gift on the beach at the island of Corfu. The novel holds your attention consistently. Plot and theme are daringly original in a daring novel, strongly dramatized by remarkable characters, the eternal Greek God Dionysus in the form of Priapus, and the twentytwo Wellesley and Smith college field hockey teams who become devotees,as well as a lady Attorney General who cancels a cult prosecution as a believer,--all modern bacchantes brandishing hockey sticks as thyruses to protect Demetrius-Dionysus and dancing to the ecstatic beat of dithyrambic music wearing hockey cleats. The novel itself has a strong voice, musical and rhythmic,in a lyrical mode.Evoi' Life'

A Legendary Hero
I was very happy to see this book in print. I knew Pistol Pete when I was a child growing up in Perkins, OK. He never tired of telling his tales to children of all ages while sitting underneath a shade tree. Every time he passed our house, he'd give us a nickel to buy a soda pop if he saw us playing in the yard. I adored him and so did everyone in town. If there was trouble about, my grandmother would tell folks to go get Pistol Pete "cuz he can shoot a flea of'n a dog's back." After his death, I was disappointed to learn there really weren't Indians hiding behind the rocks in his back yard. He always told me to watch out for them. I'm very proud and honored to have known him.
A must for amy Western library: best bio of western sheriff.
This riveting biography of one of the last, if not the last living fire-eating sheriffs of the old West starts with his youth at the tender age of about 5 when his father is murdered by some of the rag-tag Cantrell's Raiders. Given a gun by Rolla Goodnight and shown how to shoot it, he was told that he should not rest until he had killed all five of the men that killed his father. He did it by the time he hit his early twenties. He ran across an old scout that showed him how to improve his draw and accuracy and perfected unheard- of feats for show. Eventually he was working for Hanging Judge parker and describes Tulsa when it was literally a crossroads with a saloon and not much more than just that. Eaton's manner of criminal apprehension is hair rasing and unique, always giving his quarry the chance to draw first. This is definitely a book that you can't put down because of its content, style--- and the fact it is true!!
About 1955 I tolked to a fellow who was in the movie businiess, and I mentioned this book to him. He was thoroughly familiar with it and told me that various interests had been trying for years to buy the rights to it, but the family refused to sell it. What a classic it would make!!!

Someone drank an obscure chemical used in carpentry. You don't want to read about the 500 years history of Toxicology or about the principles behind activated charcoal. You want to identify the chemical in question and save the poor guy. Is it poisonous? How is it poisonous? What should I do for this patient? This amazing reference is all you need. Just the facts, m'ame!

Former Police Commissioner Discusses His Department
Frank McKetta, a former Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Commissioner, writes of the department he once headed. While much of the book relates past events in which the author does not have direct knowledge or participation, it is fascinating to read an expose researched and written by the person who was at the top of the organization. It is clear Colonel McKeeta deeply cares about the proper roles police should have.
Colonel McKetta is especially critical of local police departments throughout Pennsylvania history. He notes that local politicians determine police budgets, hire Police Chiefs, and decide which laws should be enacted and guide the degree to which existing laws should be enforced. What results are highly politicized police forces that are sharply influenced by local leaders. Unfortunately, criminals have learned to become forces within local politics and then guide police investigations and enforcement away from areas they don't want the police to notice.
Decades ago, it was official state policy that PSP officers could not investigate local crimes. Thus, gamblers and racketeers operated in parts of Pennsylvania with the local police in their pockets and without fearing the PSP. In the 1960s, Reading, Penna. hosted the largest gambling operation east of Las Vegas, according to the author. The PSP had its own problems, as Colonel McKetta claims several people achieved leading PSP positions with sponsorships from politicans with organized crime connections.
The author describes his efforts to clean up the PSP. By informing state legislators of his efforts, they turned deaf ears to politicans who argued for continuing to keep the PSP out of investigations in their political areas. The PSP thus was able to make significant progress in destroying racketeering operations, according to the author. This book provides great descriptions into how these changes were achieved. Students of state and local politics and of Pennsylvania history should find this book exceptionally useful.

What law enforcement should know
After 25 years in law enforcement I know whereof Col. McKetta speaks in his book. The general public is woefully unaware of what goes on in the political sphere regarding police and the exposures by Col. McKetta of past history in this area as well as more recent situations, personal and public media facts, is something to ponder for anywone interested in such matters. I was especially intrigued by his personal story about the gambling and racketeering involvement of the Allegheny County District Attorney and his attempt to use politics to quash State Police efforts in that area. The more recent questions that McKetta brought up about recent Governors in their relation to the police situtation suggests that perehaps the solutions he offers at the end of his book should be recognized as being feasible to correct a serious problem.

I only wish I could give 6 stars
This is it. This book is by far the most powerful thing I have ever read. I actually cried as I read the ending. This is the first book by Mr. Roderus that I have read but it will certainly not be the last. I have only 3 words of advise to you if you have not yet read this one. "BUY IT NOW !" This one will change your life.
A great achievement
In my opinion few writers can handle a novel where very few characters are onstage. Mr Roderus has given us a great novel. I read Potter's Fields at one sitting and I am sure that you will too. I was right there with Joe Potter in that line shack. I looked around and saw how miserable and ornery and cold it was and how a man carries more than just his emotions around with him. And how the tenderness of a woman is something that man ignores to his detriment. In short, this book is great -- buy it.

Good Principle and Extremely Practical
Mr Haddock explains in details how to fully ultilize your will power to achieve your goal. As a student of success philosophy, I think that this book is a good addition to the existing literature. I will always come back to this book for a deeper study.
Great book-so far! If you read self help books, it's a must!
I've only read about 120 pages so far, but this is one book I have a hard time putting down. As with most books I've read which were written around this time, Power of Will uses a lot of theatrics. I assume writers wrote in a much more descriptive fashion before the days of modern media. The first chapter seemed a little deep, but as I read on it seemed easier to assimilate. I can't tell you exactly why, but old books such as this seem to draw me in. The point of the book is: By gaining self-discipline (will-power) anything we want to accomplish will be much more possible and probable. I would compare this book with Law of Success (Napoleon Hill), Pushing to the Front (Orrison Swett Marden)and, The Master Key System (Charles F. Haanel). As I've said, read this book!

Hidden connection: Colombine High School, Littleton massacre
This book deals with the vices as well as the virtues of alienation. The massacre at Colombine High School in Littleton, Colorado, would seem be a manifestation of the vices of alienation, resistance, or disaffection. The author says, without imaginative strategies that shape the motives of alienation in healthy ways, we are doomed to see them manifested in pathological ways. Alienistic literature is still in the public domain, a gesture of respect (for the audience), not of violence. The author sees such works as antidotes to the violent or otherwise pathological impulses of civilization's "discontents."

Fresh and Courageous
Pastor Frank Honeycutt is courageous, honest, and sincere in telling us what it might be like to occupy a pulpit on a regular basis. We need more church leaders to be this open with us. This book gives the reader a fresh look at the task of living out a life of faith and sharing it with others. Although the book is aimed at preachers and church leaders, I found it to be a challenging and thought provoking boost to my own life as a lay member of a church. At times we all experience skeptical thoughts about God and go searching for answers. Pastor Honeycutt embraces questions, doubts, fears, and even ridicule, and is able to offer insight that is rare and helpful in a world filled with many pat answers to difficult questions. More churches need to offer opportunities for dialogs like those found and written about in this book.

seek & you shall find
First of all the disclaimers...the author is my pastor & I was a member of one of the groups...Having said that it's a nifty thought provoking book...it relates the author's attempts to minister to two groups of people, skeptics ( Honeycutt gathered an extrodinary crosssection of skeptics/nonbelievers etc. who for as brief time attended, ahem, faithfully ) & also gathered a group of seekers to listen to the included sermons & then provide feedback. The sermons are above average & the insights gleaned are thought provoking to say the least. If you think it may be too dry, think again. Afterall the man quotes from KINKY FRIEDMAN for God's sake (& ours)...Try it.

As a wood anatomist I cannot help feeling that an even more beautiful book could be produced by shifting the focus to anatomy: when magnified these woods would look even better. I guess a palaeobotanist would agree with me that this would make for, from a scientific point of view, a more usable and valuable book.
Nevertheless this is a magnificent piece of work: there are some quite stunning pictures in here.
