Giardino's characters are complex and clever, adding to the intensity of the book. Eric Felix, the Navy SEAL with explosives expertise, is wonderfully frightening to the imagination and makes a terrific slimy thug. There are many interesting characters... some cool like Frank Sullivan, others greedy and crooked like Jessica Rankin. All are unique and entertaining with descriptions that lead to a full understanding of the individual.
The intricate detail used throughout the book sinks the reader deep into the story. When Giardino describes the weather, you feel the temperature. The diving scenes off Catalina and San Francisco Bay reflect the extensive research done on the subject, as well as the descriptions used of Vietnam. You can see where you are at each moment, whether it's sitting in traffic, hanging out in Henry's Newport Beach office or surfing Trestles.
All in all it's a good read, suspenseful and fast-paced... complete with a surprise ending.

I highly recommend "Credit Derivatives" (2nd Edition) by Tavakoli. The products and their uses are clearly explained, and ties in relative value to the interest rate market. I concede that the models for this product may be trickier because of documentation risk and data issues, but Tavakoli brings clarity to this topic so any interest rate professional can grasp the products and why investors - even hedge funds - are so keen to use them.

The ships are wooden and ironclad ships which float due to the miracle of "lift-wood" (discovered on Mars). If you like Ironclads or Smoke on the Water you find this easier to learn and quicker paced. I am glad to see it back in print.
The book also permits to the reader to take a first contact with Jensen's scientific thought about intelligence differences; nevertheless, it doesn't dispense further reading as Jensen's essential work "The g factor", Cavalli-Sforza's "The History and Geography of Human Genes" and J. Phillip Rushton's "Race, Evolution and Behaviour".
Easily readable, despite some technical vocabulary.
