A compendium of honor and beauty
"A Complete Guide to All United States Military Medals 1939 to Present," here in its fifth edition, is an authoritative reference work which should be on the shelves of every library--school, public, and military--in the United States. Co-authors Frank Foster and Lawrence Borts have an obvious love and respect for their subject, and this commitment shows on every one of the book's pages.

This is as complete a guide to U.S. military ribbons and medals as I could imagine. The authors describe the history and criteria of each award and provide clear full-color photographs of each one. The book also contains detailed information about the various devices worn on each ribbon, guides to the proper wear of medals and ribbons on the uniform, and much more. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine awards are all covered. There is even a special section on United Nations mission medals.

This book would make a great gift for veterans, currently serving military personnel, and amateur military historians. The many illustrations make this book a truly beautiful reference work. But more than that, this book is a meaningful tribute to the women and men who have actually earned these medals and ribbons over the years. As a veteran myself, I want to thank and congratulate Frank Foster and Lawrence Borts for a stunning achievement. I look forward to the sixth edition.

Great overview of the compuational aspects of RTP
This book is a collection of articles written by various specialists in computational radiology. The content is very mathematical and emphasizes formal aspects of radiology rather than actual program code. The most refreshing article in the book is the one by D.S. Andronov, A.E. Kovtanyuk, and I.V. Prokhorov on tomography using the Boltzmann transport equation. The solution of the transport equation, numerically or otherwise, should be the main effort of concentration today. Monte Carlo simulations have for quite some time been used to examine transport problems with the assumption that the solution of the transport problem is too difficult or too computationally intensive. Christoph Borgers' article in the opening pages of the book give credence to the view that the object of interest to computational radiologists should be the numerical solution of the Boltzmann transport equation. Finite elements are one method to approach the transport problem, and these techniques are advocated in the field of optical tomography in the article by Arridge and Schweiger. Pseudocode is given in this article to illustrate the solution of the relevant problems. In this book the reader can gain much insight into the difficult problems facing computational radiologists. The articles are all well written, the breadth is decent for such a short book, and the price is reasonable.

Practical and insightful guide to the marketing process
As a consultant in the area of strategic marketing, I regularly recommend this book to my clients. It is readable and unlike many business books, free of excessive jargon and simplified formulas for success (which rarely work).

Dr. Cespedes presents an analytic approach to considering the entirety of the customer experience with an organization's marketing efforts.

A Highly Detailed History From the Chairman Himself!
Loaded with details, "Con-glom-er-ate" is a must read for not only lovers of the Illinois Central Railroad, but for those individuals who want to know what it was like when conglomerates reigned supreme in the business world. This book covers the 21 year term of William B. Johnson as Chairman and Chief Executive, first of the ICRR, then of IC Industries.

We learn of Mr. Johnson's roots as a lawyer, then of his days at the Railway Express Agency (REA), then culminating in his call to run the Illinois Central Railroad. From his early days at the IC, Johnson had a vision for the first land grant railroad (1851) in the country. Knowing the tide was shifting away from railroads as a profit center, Johnson takes a newly formed company called Illinois Central Industries, to places only he imagined. Making acquisitions and divestments, Johnson creates a $5 billion dollar company from what was a modest $300 million railroad. By the time Johnson retires, IC Industries is a complex company consisting of food and consumer products (Pet Foods, Pepsi Cola Bottling), automobile services (Midas), real estate (Illinois Center), manufacturing (Abex) and transportation (ICRR).

We are offered behind the scenes insight into negotiations, planning, Presidential meetings, and much more. No stone has been left unturned in this in depth primer of the modern conglomerate. The reader is carefully guided along from year to year, just as Johnson carefully guided IC Industries through the years.

Loaded with facts and contributions from many of Johnson's faithful Executive's, this book is a must read. I'm proud to say my father worked side by side with Mr. Johnson the entire 21 years, and then finally retired after 40 years of service with the ICRR and IC Industries. Even so, my knowledge of IC Industries increased as I read this book. The following year, in 1987, Mr. Johnson suffered a stroke and retired from the job he loved so much. However, as we learn in "Con-glom-er-ate", this is by no means the end for Mr. Johnson.

Wonderully written by Frank J. Allston, this book will amaze you with the knowlege, skill and daring of a man called William B. Johnson.
