Viva Chicano

good for young readers
Viva Chicano is a good book for young readers. In fact, it is a surprisingly good read for adult readers as well. It is not unlike some of the 'outsiders' series books by S.E. Hinton.

Although I am not of hispanic descent, I feel that Bonham handles the subject of gangs, delinquency, and hispanic-americans in the inner city in a realistic but sensitive manner. I would also like to think that it succeeds in its intent to be inspirational material for hispanic teens.

The life of a woman who should be a legend
I picked up this book at a thrift shop - my usual venue for book purchases - solely due to the title. I knew nothing of Mary Kingsley prior to reading this absorbing account of her life. Her childhood and early adult life would give no clue to the extraordinary adventures she would have in Africa, culminating in her death while serving as a nurse with the British Army in South Africa. Rudyard Kipling said of her that she was "the bravest person I know" - I hope I have the quote correct. I cannot check as I gave my copy of the book to a friend who bears a striking resemblance to Miss Kingsley.

A Walk With the Serenity Prayer: Daily Devotions for People in Recovery (The Serenity Meditation Series)

Used price: $35.35

Great Daily Devotional Book for Recovering Christians
This book has a great amount of wisdom within it's pages. It really unveils the Serenity prayer from a Christian viewpoint. Each devotional focuses on one of the key words in the Serenity Prayer (God, Grant, Serenity, Accept, etc) and has a discussion topic around that word. The words are cycled throughout the year. Why is this book out of print - I don't know!?!?!

PS- The only negative point is a lack of a good subject index.

Washington by Night: Vintage Photographs from the 30's
Published in Hardcover by Fulcrum Pub (September, 1992)
Authors: Judith Waldrop Frank and Volkmar Kurt Wentzel
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

A stunning look at Washington, DC from a glorious era.
Volkmar Wentzel's Washington by Night captures the stark beauty of the Nation's Capital, and the grandure of a bygone era, that almost defies description.

Filled with pictures taken before the World War II build-up, Wentzel's Washington is a still a sleepy southern town, about to awake to the international stage. Captured in this naive state Washington becomes a foreign city ripe for exploration and the unexpected.

The lush tri-tone images compel close study and readers cannot help but find something new everytime they pick up the book.

Volkmar Wentzel's view of Washington is an insight into the simple and monumental.

Lodoss in the handy petite size!
For those who have seen the RECORD OF LODOSS WAR television series, you might remember the little bonus bits at the end of each episode of "WELCOME TO LODOSS ISLAND" where the cast was redone in superdeformed mode, also known as chibi form. In this manga though, the whole original tale of LODOSS WAR is redone in a comical parody by the series creator, Ryo Mizuno. In the first volume, the first half of the OVA series is redone telling how the inept knight wannabe Parn and his friends seek to bring down the chaotic plans of the troublemaking witch Karla. She has taken over the body of a gorgeous priestess, and the dwarf Ghim and his sorcerer friend Slayn wish to free her from the deceased witch's control. Running into the farcical King Kashew, Parn teams up with him in an effort to rescue the fair Princess Fiana, who falls head over heels for Parn's stout priest friend Etoh. In the end, a major battle goes on between Lodoss and their neighboring island of Marmo. But Karla's plans to involve both kingdoms fails, and Ghim's friend is freed from her. The second volume takes place two yeara later where Parn and Deedlit head off to King Kashew's kingdom, only to find it involved in a civil war with a neighboring tribe who are using a powerful efreet to try and take over the desert. Deedlit makes a pact with a powerful djinn to stop them. There are some serious bits of people dying in this chapter, but still done in a spoofish manner. WELCOME TO LODOSS ISLAND is a really funny manga, but mostly intended for the enjoyment of those who have already sampled one of the previous LODOSS anime or manga titles. Artist Rei Hyakuyashiki does great work at making our favorite fantasy heroes look stupid and clutzy. Definately look it up!

Easy to read and full of information
This Western Civilization book is full of information and is very easy to read, unlike some other books of the same subject. It presents information that you need to know and that you would've never known without this book. The coolest part is that you can take the quizzes and tests online instead of actually having to go to school!

A well documented guide for comprehension of data.
This is a very good guide to gain a global view of each theme treated with rigor to sharpen the understanding of the subject. The questions for further consideration should have a model answer to consolidate the aim of provoking the correct intended thoughts about historical problems unless you want to limit yourself to an educated opinion. The reader would also benefit with answers from the themes and questions raised concerning specific documents.

The Hidden Hollywood
If you're not one of those sad creatures (like me) who likes to linger around after movies to catch all the credits, this little number may convert you. At the very least, you'll want to give the credits an extra hard look the next time you view the old classics to see if you spot a "Westmore" in the Make-Up Artist spot.

Just a terrific take on the life of the film industry from the perspective of the make-up artist. From the days before there were professionals dedicated just to making up stars up to the point where it became a real science.

This was one of those books that made me smile not only for the subject matter itself, but because it made me think "I'm so glad that a publisher had the guts to say 'You know, I bet there are a lot of people out there who would really find this stuff interesting.'"

The White Planet
Published in Paperback by Intl Evangelism Crusade (September, 1985)
Author: Frank E. Stranges
Amazon base price: $5.95
Average review score:

The White Planet Is Nibiru
An interesting book indeed. But what Dr. Stranges doesn't realize is that the "white" planet he is talking about is NIBIRU, the 12th planet that's mentioned by Dr. Malachi Z. York and Zecharia Sitchin. The reason why it's cubed shape is because that's Nibiru's force field. Even Dr. Sitchin is mistaken when he says Nibiru is a "planet", for Dr. York says it's a Mothership that's 4 times bigger than earth that came from the direction of the Orion Constellation. Scientists who are charting it now call it Rylo 7 and will be within our solar system by August 2003, so keep your eyes to the sky!
