A Slaveholder but by no means a Racist
"Balancing Evils Judiciously: The Proslavery Writings of Zephaniah Kingsley" successfully portrays the ideas my 4-times-great-grandfather shared about the relationship between race and the institution of slavery. The editors' comments go straight to the point of it all: that the idea of slavery must not be based on race, or for that matter, racism. Kingsley himself was an enigma, a contradiction. Few white men held a stronger appreciation for the Negro race, as his writings and personal life indicate. It seems that towards the end of his life (as shown by his establishment of a colony of most of his freed slaves and his family in the northern part of the island of Hispaniola, specifically what is today the Dominican Republic) he embraced the abolitionist cause. The settlement he founded, a tiny model of Liberia in the Caribbean, is now the bustling tourist town of Cabarete. I earnestly recommend anybody interested in understanding and interpreting the sad story of slavery -specifically how it relates to anti-African racism- to read this book, and to pay extra careful attention to the original footnotes written by my ancestor- perhaps then some light might be shed on this chapter of the ongoing American saga: race relations.

Ballad of Daniel Shays
A great book which gives a detailed account of Shays' Rebellion, detailing how immediately after the Revolutionary War, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was allowing creditors (mainly from the East, i.e. Boston), to reposess the homes of farmer/soldiers who were not paying their loans while off with the Army. The book goes on to describe how the Rebels would lay seige to courthouses and prevent the proceedings from taking place, even forcing judges out of their courts at bayonet-point. It describes popular opinion toward the Rebels, and their ultimate disintegration and includes a detailed bibliography and some photos and drawings, including a photo of Shays' gravestone.

Baptized We Live: Lutherarism As a Way of Life

Fresh Air For All Christian Churches
I was handed this book by a woman Lutheran pastor when I visited her church and asked for more information about what Lutherans believe. Wow! This book is sooo uplifting, happy, refreshingly un-churchy. If you can picture Charles Shultz's Snoopy reincarnated as a Lutheran minister and writing about what he believes in....you're getting close to what this book is like. My copy is 8 inches by ll and only 28 pages (more like a workbook in appearance). But turn the cover and you enter a pre-printing press monk's version of a multi-media event. (You have to open the cover to understand what I'm trying to express.) Erlander has hand printed, and hand illustrated all over the place, the entire book. He apparently writes like this all the time (he summarized the whole Bible this way and called it "Manna and Mercy: A brief history of God's unfolding promise to mend the entire universe"...also 5 stars). Who but the reincarnation of Snoopy would take on the whole Bible with one pencil and a ream of blank paper?

Erlander doesn't really write at all: he explodes in joy (illustrated joy). And in love, inclusiveness, acceptance, and in awe of God. Example: "God does not despise flesh. He dwelled in the flesh of Jesus and he dwells in flesh today. The ruler of the universe hides himself in the common, in the stuff of this earth. God lives in creation; He lives in all. Therefore, we see God in all..." (Erlander's note:) " 'Flesh' in this context refers to the human body--bones, muscles, organs, etc. and, in a wider sense, the material world. The goodness of matter is affirmed in Genesis l and, abover all, in the birth of Jesus as God in flesh. When Paul talks about 'flesh' in Romans', he is not talking about matter but a will that is directed away from God. We need to understand the difference between these two uses of 'flesh' in order to avoid the unbiblical idea that matter is evil." And then further on: "We are Christians because God surprised us."

This inclusiveness extends to ecumenism as well: "We are catholic Christians, members of the universal and apostolic church, one family in Christ by Baptism. We pray for and work for the unity of the whole church on earth, longing for the day when the Holy Spirit will gather all Christians into a single body, a people who will be ONE. AS JESUS AND THE FATHER ARE ONE." But the words alone don't give a true idea of the book....the reader has to open the covers and join in the multi-media experience created from one pencil and one gentle mind that obviously has spent time laughing first hand with God.

The hike takes you from the old mint on powell street through chinatown, financial district, north beach, pier 39 and fishermans wharf with a cable car return (Don't forget to stop by the cable car museum). There are optional side trips to coit tower/telegraph hill (views of golden gate bridge, alcatraz) and nob hill. An outstanding study aid for any law student taking Crim Pro
This book is an exceptional outline of the law concerning the 4th, 5th and 6th amendments. It is well organized and completely thorough. While I would never suggest to a law student that they ignore reading all of the assigned cases in a particular class; this outline is so well done that you could rely upon it almost exclusively in your study preparation and still receive a good grade. I would also recommend this book to police officers, paralegals, or anyone else who needs to learn the intricate details of the law of search and seizure, confessions and the right to counsel. As a former student of Professor Capra, I was not suprised at the quality of this work.

Gleitman text a classic
This is no longer the most current edition of this text book. The Gleitman text is definitive, comprehensive, a classic. Gleitman is now over 70, and writes from extensive and broad experience in many areas of psychology. His wife is Lila Gleitman, one of the foremost living linguists in America, after Chomsky.

Henry Gleitman is a true humanist in the traditional sense. He writes with a deep sense of humanity. Within the field of psychology, he is rekowned for his teaching of intro psychology courses at Univ of Pennsylvania. When you read Gleitman's text, you get a great introduction to psychology from a true scholar who has stood at the forefront of his field for decades. His survey is taken from close personal acquaintence with many of the history-makers whose research is discussed in his book.

If you are assigning an intro psych text, this is the one. If you are taking an intro psych class, with this text, bother to do the reading.

The Basics of New Testament Syntax
Having studied in detail the New Testament Greek syntactical the classical New Testament works of Dana and Mantey and A. T. Robertson's Grammar of the Greek New Testament in the Light of Historical Research I have found that Wallace has done an excellent job of simplifying the complexities of the Grammar of the New Testament and has written a book that has 're-worded' complex grammatical terms into language that will make it much easier for the serious Greek student to understand the original text. I especially recommend this book to students who have at least one year of basic Greek grammar on the college level. It will greatly aid in the study of the text.

A must-have!
This is the perfect book for helping children to remember that if THEY are pleased with something they have made for the joy of making it, then it does not matter what others think. A good book for many adults (especially hypercritical ones) to read as well...

INSPIRATIONAL!
Having been involved in bears and photography for the past twenty years, I found this book to be a magnificent synopsis of these great creatures. Dan Cox's photography allows you to become so close as to be intimate with some of Mother Nature's finest work. The images are truly breathtaking and the writing unquestionably illuminates our understanding of these great creatures and how they have influenced our cultures. On a one to ten scale, we give this book a twelve!
