one of the greats
Browning is one of the great poets. this selection contains poems such as 'the last dutchess', 'porphyria's lover' and 'childe roland to the dark tower came' which shows browning at his best. this selected poems only whetted my appetite for a complete version.

Traitor In The Midst
Hennessy Cooper is a beautiful FBI agent, who's goal is to excel on every assignment. From the moment she sees a photograph of her latest target, Tristan "TJ" Jackson, she feels an instant attraction. And even though she knows that he is a notorious thief, she cannot ignore the pull that she feels on her heart strings, but she is determined not to let anything affect her job. Unfortunately, the heart sometimes overrules the head, and Hennessy knows this will be the hardest case of her career.

Knowing he is under surveillance, TJ is extremely cautious of the people he allows in his inner circle, but he lets Hennessey in. He is a thoughtful, kind person, but because of his career choice, this is not the impression most people have. TJ lost the most important person in his life because of his work and as a result, he is rethinking all aspects of his life. He is suspicious of all strangers due to his line of work. But TJ finds Hennessy extremely attractive and as a result he lowers his guard and breaks his own rule.

Author JDaniels SERPENT IN MY CORNER is romantic and adventurous. The characters are real and she makes you care about what happens to them. I previously enjoyed her writing, but I also see the growth with this book, and I anxiously await her next work.

Good, brief, and catchy sermon-starter sketches
This book contains a variety of short and light sketches to use as a lead-in to a sermon. They vary from lightly amusing to slightly slap-stick. Sometimes one has to be careful about the theology of skit books, but this one is very good with only a few that may be questionable if your congregation is not of a fundamentalist faith.

Are men really from Mars and women from Venus???
I was doing a literature review on cross-sex friendships and this book was so helpful! I kept reviewing it every few minutes and now have a million bookmarks in my own copy. I learned so much about how relationships, in general, work and continue. And the added bonus is that is wasn't a lot of pop-pysch mumbo-jumbo! It made so much sense!

Fur Trade Pioneer
While the focus here is on one of our fur trade pioneers, David Jackson, the reader also gains insight as to the many economic and geopolitical strategies which went on between American and British fur companys. However, I must point out a few controversial issues. First of all, the author seems to portray two of the fur trade's icons as somewhat greedy, heartless and callous individuals: William Ashley for financial and economic gains and Jedediah Smith for exploration fame and glory. So be it. There is not enough space here for a debate. Secondly, the author is quite adamant in his view on the presence of alcohol during the first mountain rendezvous of 1825 while evidence refutes this. The only mention of alcohol in Ashley's diary of commodities during that first rendezvous is, according to Dale Morgan's scholarly work "The West of William Ashley", footnoted as future orders for the following year. In agreement with Morgan are other historians such as Fred Gowans ("Rocky Mountain Rendezvous"); Richard Clokey ("William Ashley: Enterprise and Politics in the Trans-Mississippi West"); Linda Hasselstrom ("Journal of a Mountain Man: James Clyman); and Jack Tykal ("Etienne Provost: Man of the Mountain") to name a few. I believe the author may be conjecturing on this issue. Thirdly, there is mention that Bridger floated down the Green River to taste the salt of an inland lake. Is he referring to, as one would suppose, the Great Salt Lake? Maybe I am reading this wrong, but how could he float down the Green, (which empties into the Colorado River), and then into Salt Lake? According to Bridger's biographer, J. Cecil Alter, Bridger went down the Bear River (and possibly by horse, due to the time of year) which does in fact empty into Salt Lake. Overall a good book with a stellar bibliography.

Mexican Americans before and after the Viet Nam War
Cano's novel is a superb portrayal of the Chicano experience of the war. A community with a long tradition of military service, Mexican Americans in both Korea and Viet Nam were forced to test their patriotism against a brutal and senseless war. Cano's characters suggest that young Chicanos served in Southeast Asia for many different reasons. His character Jesse Peña, who reportedly deserted to the Viet Cong because he viewed them as poor people of color like himself, is one of the great figures of U.S. literature about the war (in the tradition of Cacciato and others). This is an enjoyable read and a significant literary and historical document.

A Short History of Archaeology

Author: Glyn Daniel

Fun general history of the topic
Though slightly dated, this book is a fun general history of archaeology. It reminds me of the Ceram book Gods, Graves and Scholars which I read as a child and which gave me my first exposure to a life long interest. This book is more in depth than the Ceram book and covers a wider number of countries in which archaeological discoveries have been made.

A Short Introduction to Judaism

Excellent overview
Took literally hours to find a reasonable introduction to Judaism for my non-Jewish girlfriend. Most overviews were either written for people with a considerable amount of background or were polemical, defending a particular form of Judaism. One of the great things about this book is that it attempts to give a fair explanation of a wide variety of Jewish thought and practice, representing the diversity of a wide variety of consumers. My only complaint is that relatively little discussion is made of non-European Jewish practice.

Simulacron Three
Published in Digital by RosettaBooks, LLC ()
Author: Daniel Galouye
Amazon base price: $5.99
Average review score:

Dated, but essential
The idea of virtual reality was not new at the time when Galouye wrote Simulacrum Three. In pulp-series Perry Rhodan, the character "Atlan" entered a computer simulated reality somewhere in 1963. And no doubt more examples can be found.

In Simulacrum Three, the main character, Douglas Hall slowly gets involved in a process where reality becomes more and more inconsistent. He is working on a project involving "Simulacrum 3" a system in which every day reality can be simulated in order to predict group movements. For instance to use for marketing purposes.

The 13th floor may be based on this book (I have not seen the movie) but the setting of "Simulacrum Three" is absolutely different from the "1930" setting used in the film.

The book deals with the question "What are the boundries of reality?" and shows what happens with the main character if that boundry is crossed.

If you are interested in one of the earliest books describing VR, buy and read it. Galouye is worth it.
