H.S. Survival is a fun and unique book for teens
I think High School Survival is one of the most useful and interesting books that a teenager can read. There are so many good helpful hints--I am a teenager, and I found myself relating to all the scenarios described, and really enjoying any advice they offered. Overall, I'd say High School Survival is a great gift for a friend or yourself, and I would definitely reccommend it. It is informative without being preachy, and there are student authors from all over the country, so there is probably someone who hails from wherever you live! It reads like a "Chicken Soup" book, but it is something that is helpful with solving different problems as you are confronted with different issues, so if you have read it once, tht's not enough! I loved this book--please give it a go, you will be glad you did!

An enlightening view on high school life.
An enlightening view on high school life. A must have for all high school students. Each chapter touches on the major aspects of high school life. What an incredible read.

Perfect for all high-schoolers of the future and present.
Amazingly honest, and straight-forward, this book is a virtual guidance counselor for all future and present high-schoolers. The charismatic authors (who are in high school themselves) present the facts both candidly and humorously. Five stars for a very successful guide.

Fast paced
There's an excitement to this story where even the down times of rehearsal or learning about the Great Hoo Ha Ha become fun and exciting. Playtrain is an excellent example of expert pacing. As far as I can find this is Daniel Liegey's first work but I'm guessing it won't be his last. There is so much room left open for a sequel, I'm betting we'll see Playtrain 2 soon enough. I would highly recommend this book to readers of all ages.

Some of the highlights in the story include the "Infamous Playtrain Circus" At the first mention of it, the circus didn't sound so appealing but when you actually get to the surreal details of it you'll become memorized. Maddening drums! I love it! The kite fight match is fun. It opens up a great little subplot to the book and helps to broaden Sam's horizons in the underground. But I have to say, if you can follow it, the mystery is well built. You'll kick yourself for not figuring it out on your own.

The train passenger's are fun. There's no real deepness to them but I'm not sure that's necessary. I have to admit I found myself laughing at Antonio the Demon's jokes. They're supposed to be bad and I guess I thought that's why they were funny. All of the characters are loony in one way or another. Horton is probably the most likeable but Teckle Rubar is genius. The Doves's songs I found annoying but I think that was the point. What's up with the sheep? It's kind of funny. She just slept the whole time and wakes up for a second at the end. Fitzgerald Fang might be one of the most clever character's created I've ever read. Maybe I'm thinking too much? I just realized that I'm writing more towards people who read the book already and not to the people who want to read it. So my advice is to read this book!

A breath of fresh air amongst the current trend!
Splendid performance and sure to delight readers of all ages!

perfect book
Playtrain is another one of those can't put em' down children's books that has has flooded the market. In a lot of ways this book is even better then most. It has that comedy flair like in Artemis Fowl and it captures that magic of traveling to a new place here on earth just like the Golden Compass. It reads fast and it's got a nice twist on the whole idea of who the hero should be. There's a part in it that really made me think about how children can mold another child into being a bully. It's and interesting concept. After all, the kid whose good at sports gets rewarded and molded into a future athlete. The kid who gets good in art class gets molded into an artist. It's a subtle message but probably a really important one we need to look at with all the recent focus on bullying behavior. I like that there's a little bit more moral fiber put into Playtrain versus' the other books. Don't worry, the adventure is just as solid as the rest of them. And unlike the other book where the hero's often get major help in the end from their friends, in this book it all comes down to the main character. The concept of the book is wonderful! These kids put on school plays in order to harness the audience's imagination and then they can create their train. The trick is, they have to be back from their adventure by the time the play is over or the train disappears. Pretty cool! It's got some of the strangeness of Lemony Snicket and the secondary characters are just as fun as the secondary character's in Artemis Fowl. I almost wish I read this first because I like it more.

This is the book you have been looking for
You've probably read dozens of books on the Kabballah and still you are confused. You thought that by now you would have pieced it together, but all you have are jagged and conflicting fragments. You've asked yourself "why hasn't anyone tied all of this stuff together?" Well this is that one book that you have been searching for. I got this book over a year ago, and, in retrospect, it was the last book "about" Kabballah I have bought. Since then I have gotten only a few source texts, commentaries and translations. Daniel has provided all that you truly need. But, beware! After this book comes the truly hard part--the learning is over and the work must begin in earnest. Think you are ready? Sometimes the searching is easier than the finding! Those with an orthodox bent should probably stay with the Chabad path and their sources. This book is probably more amenable to those outside of the Jewish orthodoxy. But no matter what path you end up taking, you will learn something from Daniel.

I have heard that a new printing is in the works, so be patient. Getting this book could turn out to be the defining moment in your life.

A Masterful Treatise on the Qabalah for Modern Readers
Few books impart the depth of understanding and wisdom in a way that is accessible to the average reader as does Qabalah, The Mystical Heritage of the Children of Abraham.

I have read numerous books on the Qabalah, and have found many to be confusing or inconsistent. Daniel Feldman's book is a lucid account of his mentor's teachings that is universal in its tone. No one is excluded from this work and everyone is offered a place at the table. Any universal system such as the Qabalah should be available to all, and the yogi, Sufi, and Christian should all feel comfortable with this book.

Feldman shares this Western mystical tradition with the world in a way that respectfully removes the dogma of rabbinical Judaism, but maintains the purity of original teachings.

This book, just revised and updated (2003), is a must for anyone interested in the Jewish mystical approach to spirituality.

Qabalah : The Mystical Heritage of the Children of Abraham
The best book I ever read!!!! You can comprehend it all you want, but you won't get it until you don't. Become a Fool and BUY IT!
It's from The divine Fool him self.

Secret Family: Twenty-Four Hours Inside the Mysterious World of Our Minds and Bodies

Incredible journey into things we don't see
This is one of those books, which is highly informative, entertaining and has "repeat" value. I read this book twice in succession and even though i rented it from the library, i feel so compelled by the information in it that i am purchasing a copy for my bookshelf . I know, i will refer to it often to reaffirm to myself ,nothing is ordinary as it seems.
For eg: Postage stamps, those tiny square pieces which we lick , stick and forget. I quote how this book unravels it " Postage stamps are an intricate layered sandiwch of chemicals. The glue is a true masterpiece of the chemist's art. Think of a problem. Not only does the glue have to be sticky enough to hold onto a envelope, but it has not to be so sticky that it grabs permanently on your tongue. It has to do this with onlythe amount of salive we're happy to dribble off and then it has to stick to the envelope firmly, but still you give you a moment or two to readjust its position. Finally, even once the chemists have worked out something that's tongue attractive and humidity resistant and briefly free-sliding, they still have have to throw it out if it tastes bad. Or offends anybody's religion. Ir is too expensive. Or is too high in calories."

This is just a sample. The books jumps and hops in a free wheeling away across many varied aspects of our lives, commenting and shedding light on them. For eg, Chicken breast is found white in the fast food centers, stuffed in salads or other food menu. WHy? Normally food tends to be green or reddish or brown, but very rarely white. This is because of the sedentary lifestyle of the modern-day chicken. The flight muscles in the breast don't get used much, so there's no reason for oxygen sotring red blood cells to be soaked darkly through them. AS a result, the breast comes out white.

One thing you will definitely remember after reading this book is that you are never alone. Tuck yourself in the cleanest of bedsheets? Even then, there will be around 40000 pillow mites (ghastly miniature Rhino look alikes) crawling over the pillow.

Right now, on our faces are armies of demodex mites. Harmless creatures feasting on our skin, unvisible to us.

The pictures in the book are incredible. Read and enjoy!

cheers!

A very interesting read...
I cannot elaborate much further than the other reviews already have. Simply stated, this book makes you think about everyday things in a different way. I am glad I purchased and read it. Yes, the photographs are amazing.

Fabulously frightening
This book provides a fascinating look into what goes on in our homes daily. The descriptions of what we eat, where we sleep, and how our bodies protect us from (too much) harm are incredible. Bodanis has researched nearly every aspect of family life, and explains to us what it all means. My only complaint about this book is that it doesn't have enough photographs. Those that it does have are splendid, however.

What an experience!
This masterpiece by Doctor Victor of Hamilton High School is the primary example of what makes modern literature so great. Replete with exciting sequences, surprise twists and turns, rich diction, and tone changes, this mystery book has had a gigantic impact on me. Its eloquent account of the adventures of Holmes and Watson, with their searing downfalls and courageous successes, proves once again that Hamilton High School is the greatest school ever and that Doctor Victor is the best teacher ever. No, I don't need an A (I graduated in 1998); all I want is to pay homage to the great author of the suspensful thriller. Doctor Victor, We remember you and love you. I think this goes for everyone.

The Best!
I'm in Dr. Victor A.P. class and although I haven't read the book the plot and story line sound interesting. I will soon buy the book and add it to my collestion of books which will be a pleasure to have. Get one of the best books of the 20th century. Hey all in the class and to you Dr. Victor! This should be an "A" in the class, don't you think Dr.Victor. Per.3 "01"

One of the greatest books i have never read
Dr. Daniel Victor is one of the greatest authors of the 20th century. His use of diction and syntax in all the right place makes The Seventh Bullet enjoyable to read. Also I am in his AP English class and could really use a good grade in that class. Whatever my fellow classmate Mike said is all true. Casey Per. 3 '01

It may not be life changing but it sure is good
Wow. I've read most of the Daniel Pinkwater books and this is one of my favorites. How can you go wrong with characters called Rat, Heinz, and Uncle Flipping? His obsession with strange names and chareacters and fast food definitely shows up in this book!
If you liked this book you would probably like the book Alan Mendelson, The Boy from Mars.
CHEERS!

Pinkwater's Best
... and that's saying a lot. I've been a big Pinkwater fan for many years, and this is my favorite of his. The book is longer than his short picture books - long enough that he can really get into the story - and what a story! It just keeps getting better and better as you go on. Yes, this is Pinkwater at his best - demand its republishing!

I love this book!
My dad and I listened to the audio version in the car. I absolutely loved this, as did he. We even listened to it twice.

THE best puppy book written!
Before you get a dog, buy this book! From a terrific "Puppy Scoring" test to help select the right pup for you out of a litter, to practical tips on teething and house training, this book is the best. Used it extensively to raise what became The Best Dog in the World -- their tips helped her be house trained within 2 weeks of coming home (never another accident!). I have given 15 copies of this book as gifts when friends have said they were thinking about getting a dog. If you buy a dog book, buy this one!

The best puppy book I've ever read
I read this book when I was a little kid with my first puppy, and I checked it out at the school library. I read it from cover to cover about 20 times. It was amazing, and it helped me as a 12 year old to raise my dog. I loved it so much that I am recommending it for my Mom to use for her new puppy. It was very friendly and very helpful, and so appropriate to raising happy healthy dogs. This book is timeless. I can't wait to read it again.

Every first time puppy owner should have this book.
This is the first of what is now have a whole shelf full of dog books, and it is still my all-time favorite puppy raising book. It was a wonderful book to have handy while raising my first puppy, and I used it a lot. The training information and common problems section is quite good. I really like thier information on choosing a dog, and if you should even have one. It's a very understandable, and easy to use introduction to responsible dog ownership and how to have a happy, healthy puppy, all written in a very friendly tone. It gave me a great foundation to help my now adult dog be such a wonderful, very well behaved dog, and the envy of other dog owners.

The Prize

Author: Daniel Yergin
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

An excellent primer on petroleum
This book explains how oil affects our lives, our nation, the world's economy and political situations. Yergin's writing style is superb, and although the material is somewhat dry, he really brings events to life. This work is rare for non-fiction - it is easy reading and informative. I have just finished the book a few minutes ago, and I really feel that I have learned a great deal. My favorite section was on World War II. I have read hundreds of books on the subject, but the section in "The Prize" dedicated to the War from a petroleum standpoint is superb

History of Oil and the Drive for Technology
This book is one of the best for enlightening those of the the 1970's forwrd of the preferred interests of their mothers and fathers. Ex- President Bush is heavily documented in his actions with those of the Middle Est in his attempts at acquiring a chunk of the oil industry. It highlights South America's Venezuela and its failing oil fields. It shows the world's efforts at unity for one major purpose. It defines OPEC and ARAMCO as they need to be understood. For anyone not current on world issue, this is the book to read.

Truly a classic text. Fascinating and enlightening.
Yergin's grasp of the broad view of the history of oil and its context in world history is amazing. Scholarly and yet as compelling as the best fiction, this book is a masterful work

An Incredible Life
There are few characters in history, let alone American Civil War Generals, as controversial as Daniel Sickles. That his story remains so obscure defies explanation.

W.A. Swanberg's book opens with perhaps the most notorious chapter in Sickles's long life, the killing of his wife's paramour in the shadow of the White House and the first use of the temporary insanity defense in American jurisprudence.

I expected the remainder of this book to be anticlimactic and was gratefully disappointed. Swanberg is admittedly an exuberant fan of Sickles, perchance affording him more credit than his due, but the amazing facts of his life seem to deserve more attention than other historians have provided. A man of obvious contrasts, Sickles was a Tammany Hall politician who made it his duty to bring down Jay Gould and his cohorts because he loathed their corruption. The confidant of many presidents who presented his prostitute/mistress to the court of Queen Victoria and the Civil War General who is given equal credit for winning and losing the battle of Gettysburg.

Though somewhat dated, especially in it's respectful treatment of someone who doesn't always deserve it, there simply isn't a more entertaining or complete depiction of Sickles incredible life.

Sickles master politician!!
If Daniel Sickles doesn't represent the master politician in this outstanding book about him, I don't know what would. This book definately gets to the details about the man's polictical and military careers. Swanberg writes about Sickle's early polictical organizing in Washington, his affairs with women, family, constructing a New York brigade and leading it to battle. If that is not intriguing enough, Sickle's story is also covered when it came to killing the man who was having an affair with his wife and how Sickle's polictical clout sets him free from prosecution. As much as his personal and polictical career is covered, his military career is as well. Swanberg's coverage how he organized, fought and defended his positions regarding his III Corp movement at Gettysburg is excellent which seemed to only cloud this already controversial character. As I read this very informative book, I couldn't believe the amount of lies, deception and self-importance this man had. His master plundering of others and fouled attempts to mask his true character is wrenching yet fascinating at the same time. Swanberg captured me in this book and I couldn't let it down. I feel it is probably the best book on Daniel Sickles out there.

Fantastically interesting
Daniel E. Sickles was born in New York City 20 Oct 1819, served three terms in the House of Representatives, and died May 3, 1914. This account of his life, tho it has no footnotes and no bibliography, is written in a breezy style that easily captivates. I was tremendously caught up by the story. It begins with the account of how Sickles killed Francis Scott Key's son on Feb 27, 1859, then goes back to the beginning and tells the whole fantastic, incredible story of his life, with lots of attention to his Civil War career, including his role at Gettysburg. As Horatio King wrote in Sickles' old age:
"I see him on that famous field,/ The bravest of the brave,/ Where Longstreet's legions strive to drive/ The Third Corps to its grave./ The fight was bloody, fierce and long,/ And Sickles' name shall stay/ Forever in the Hall of Fame/ As he who saved the day."
Sickles was a despicable character and yet his life is a fantastic saga. An excellent book.
