A Basic Primer
"The Jewish Home" meets the criteria for a basic introduction for those who want to understand guidelines and holidays for building a Jewish Home. This small volume best serves those who have a limited knowledge basis upon which to build. It is simply written, easy to read and uses a Q&A format to provide information about rituals and customs for the practise and understanding of Reform Judaism. The photos are somewhat dated but do not detract from the currency of the textual material.

Super book - very helpful for the beginner.
Excellent book for the family looking for ways into observing Judaism in the home.

Worthwhile Book on an Important Topic
There are not many books i have found on this topic of disabled people finding and keeping jobs. DR Ryan has written a very helpful book for me and some of my friends. I read it and I hope to get a good job soon. Thanks.

Job Search Handbook for People With Disabilities
It is hard enough to go through life suffering from a hearing loss. The job market is so competative thet my disability makes it difficult for me to be able to find work. In this book, I found usful information to use as I went out to get a job. The book explained my rights and how I should approach getting a job. This book is not just for disabled people. My brother used it as a referance after getting out of college. He and i highly recomend it!

A "JOY"ful reading experience
So many books today are just copies of other popular themes/stories. Not "JOY" by Daniel Andretti. This book had great characters, made me think and kept me guessing as to what was going to happen next. Just when I figured it out (or I thought) Andretti went deeper. I fully enjoyed this book because it was a breath of fresh air. I get annoyed and tired when the same stuff is recycled - the only difference being a different cover. I look forward to Mr. Andretti's next adventure.

Joy for reading Joy
I feel this writer, Daniel Andretti did a marvelous job transporting one's imagination between futuristic points of view and flash backs to modern time. To truly understand this book you must allow yourself to open up and digest the full atmosphere that he is creating. You must be willing to accept different perspectives and rationalities otherwise you will lose the intented text. Keep writing Mr. Andretti, I patiently await your next great journey.

Excellent Message
It is a message most of us need to hear. As we find many people being segrated in many neighborhoods the walls that divide us cause confusion a fear. If we take the chance to go over that wall we are often surprised that the people from the other side are really just like us. This really hits home to me as I live on the well to do side of a large block wall that separates our neighborhood from a housing project.

Great Message That All Need To Hear Or ReHear
In a place like New Zealand/Aotearoa we have lots of ethnicities, nationalities, and Etc. diverse groups. This book is one of those jewels that hopefully will stay in school libraries all over the world forever. Definitely a refreshing chnage from animal stories and fairy tales for children of all ages... AND EVEN ADULTS TOO, EH?

A fantastic, easy-to-read book!
I picked this book up used as it just looked nice. The book has a forward by Bill Gates which is really nothing special. The format of the book is what makes it so pleasant to read. It's written by Kasparov in first person in a diary format. If you're familiar with Chernev's "Logical Chess Move by Move" or similar books where each and every move from the first to the last is explained and like that format then you'll love this book. It's really only "instructional" if you're at Kasparov's level. However, this is not marketed as an instructional book.

It gives fantastic insight to Kasparov's thoughts as the game progressed. All of the things going on in his life on the side as this game moved forward through the months.

And let's not forget the game itself. What a blast to read! Not the typical draw that a lot of strong strong games end in. But a win in a style that only Kasparov could serve up.

If you want something you can learn from, I don't suggest this book. If you want a book that you can read a few pages before you go to bed every night, this is just for you. You don't need to set up a chessboard to read this book.

It should also be noted that this book is not one of those typical chess books in that it's not double-column pages with tiny text and more notation than text. This is far more words than notation. That's what makes this book so easy and fun to read.

A Terrific and Gripping Read
The combination of Garry Kasparov and Microsoft makes for the most compelling chess read I've known to date. Anyone who is interested in the internet and chess must own this book!

Keys to the Asylum : A Dean, a Medical School, and Academic Politics
Published in Paperback by New Medical Press (12 August, 2000)
Author: Daniel K. Bloomfield

A Journey through Academia
Dr. Bloomfield, Founder and Dean of a new and innovative medical school at the University of Illinois, describes the challenges and frustrations of creativity within a bureaucratic state system. His description of the hurdles he had to leap, and especially the lack of support (primarily financial) offered to him, would make most people cave in. Balanced with these frustrations is the extraordinary success he was able to achieve. It is a credit to him and to his colleagues that so much was accomplished. And that is what makes the story bearable. I would encourage university administrators and those interested in innovative approaches to medical (and other professional) disciplines to read this book.

Review for medical administration
This interesting story, part autobiography and full of history, details the incipient days of founding a medical institution. Literally from the ground up, Dr. Bloomfield describes how an idea, great innovation, procuring the funding, and convincing the politicians resulted in the beginning construction. His Part II, "The Act of Creation" goes to the heart of finding the curriculum and the students to use it. Tension and relief bob up and down as the unchartered meets the new sailors. Then the bureaucracy gravitates and its inertia sometimes slows, other time really impedes the progress. Nevertheless, there is something to say for the distillation process, which in the end seems to come up with the right mixture of what should and what could be done.

What comes through the pages is the love for education, the purity of intent that Dr. Bloomfield had. Battling with detractors, some with power and others with jealousy seemed to invigorate his pugnacious side. When he found the good guys, nestled among the many people with whom he had to deal, he had genuine concern for their thoughts and suggestions.

Lessons take many forms and the path to this school showed many roads to take for projects we might consider. Reading about this effort and enjoying the success in the epilogue, I could find many useful suggestions and tactics. Such books bear the signature of the great medical administrators who steered the medical schools in the 60's to 80's in some very troubled times.

COMING INTO MANHOOD
Jordan has suffered significant losses in his short thirteen years of life. His father's strength, grandmother's firmness and siblings' love has pulled him through. Now he is ready to face the greatest challenge of all; coming into manhood.

Kwanzaa is a few months away and the support and wisdom of his father to lead him on his path is gone. His father died leaving him alone to figure out how to become a man. Kwanzaa is the setting and background for this tale of a young boy going through transitions. Taking on the responsibility in caring for his brother and sister, facing peer pressure at school and unsure of himself, Jordan faces the possibility of falling into a pit where he will never emerge. Will he be able to tackle the winds of change slapping him?

The story shows us the love, pain and joy of community that bands together during Kwanzaa to help this young boy go through his rite of passage into manhood. You empathize with this teenager who has so much on his shoulders and feels there is no way out. Share this fable with your family and children as they learn the process of what it means to become an adult. As Kwanzaa rapidly comes upon us, its principles lay a foundation for what one can become. This is an excellent book for the holiday and throughout the year.

The True Meaning
This was on of the most toutching books i have ever read. It is about a boy who is loosing all his family members and is struggling to keep going. Well one day his friend starts talking him into things and he knows it is wrong. Then on day he leaves the house and something happens, his house catches on fire and the one thing that is retrived from the fire is a piece of cloth. His father wanted him to have itand he was not sure what it meant but it meant something to him.

La Cucaracha Martina is a wonderfully funny book for kids!
This book was wonderful! Although written for younger children older children and adults will enjoy it too. The illustrations are crisp, bright and whimsical. The story of a beautiful cockroach is based on a Caribbean Folktale. It is a fun read and a great book to share with others. The book has lots of secrets in the language. Look for the meaning to the many spanish signs and symbols located throughout the book. I shared this with my college classmates, my adolescent children and younger children as well. They all enjoyed the story and were equally intrigued by the illustrations.

This cucaracha is simply magnifica!
This is a classic book. My daughter is 3 and she just loves la cucharacha Martina's quest for the "beautiful noise." It helps that my husband is an entomologist - the two of them get a big kick out of this book. Spanish is woven into the book, in the signs and in names, but you don't need to speak Spanish to read and enjoy the book. The pictures are beautiful, fascinating to children. All around, a family favorite for us!

A glimpse into one urban elementary classroom
I did not know what to expect when I ordered this book but since I was about to start a job in a tough urban high school, I thought it couldn't hurt. What I got was a book that focused on one man's elementary classroom and his specific day to day experiences. This is a heartfelt, and well written account of those experiences that would be good reading for those interested in becoming an urban elementary teacher or understanding the unique challenges of this job. I would not recommend it however for those teaching high school or middle school since that is a whole different ball game!

Good book! Full of personal accounts.
I thought Meier's book was a good introduction into urabn elementary teaching especially if you're a beginning teacher or simply interested in education. It's not a handbook by any means, but Meier covers valid issues that come up through his experience as a 1st grade co-teacher that were insightful and helpful to me as a beginning teacher.

excellent journalism with heart
This book is about to reach for your heart. I started reading it because i'm interested in the history of South Africa, but the book is about much more, not only literally. Next to that it handles subjects like the authors experiences in Burma, South Africa, Rwanda and even in his homeland Ireland, it handles the personal feelings and personal experiences of the author. He manages to describe the most important events in his life thus far with a journalistic as well as a personal touch. He also writes about his youth, the birth of his son and his parents. Altogether this book lights a journalists life in a moving, eyeopening way. I recomment this for reading, it's not really hard to read or heavy but gives you a good extra baggage along the way, and touches you.

Superlative ......
This is a book written with such sensitivity and honesty that even a reader with no interest in the subject matter could not fail to be enthralled by Keane's narratives.
Add to this the detailed insights into the places and personalities, the touches of humour and pathos, and the inherent reporter's cynicism combined with Keane's Irish wit, and here is a book which I at least could not put down.
A treasure, one of the most moving books I have ever read.
I have been trying to get hold of his book 'The Bondage of Fear' to complete my collection of his works.
