A wonderful continuation of the American Quilts series.
Daniel Tandy's mother died when he was a baby, and his father left him to head out west to pursue his dreams. Raised by his grandparents on an Illinois farm, Daniel longed to know a father's love. When his grandfather dies, Daniel is upset by the many changes that occur. His father's cousin Hattie, the closest thing to a mother Daniel has even know, leaves Illinois with her husband and children to homestead in Oklahoma. So Daniel comes up with a daring plan. He runs away from home and heads for South Dakota, where he knows his father lives. But the year is 1890, and rumors of an Indian uprising are running rampant. At first Daniel fears for his life - until he hears the Indians' side of the story. And what Daniel discovers when he finds his father will change his life forever. This was an exciting and heartwarming continuation of American Quilts, the saga of one American pioneer family over four generations.

Great story! Great art!
Beautifully illustrated, this telling of a cherished Bible story is a great lesson for children (and adults) today. A young man is taken captive and pressure is put on him to compromise, but he remains steadfast to his faith and his standards. He is put to the ultimate test because of his convictions and God delivers him miraculously. And deals with his enemies. And blesses Daniel and his friends.

Daniel: A Commentary on the Book of Daniel (Hermeneia: A Critical and Historical Commentary on the Bible)
Published in Hardcover by Fortress Press (June, 1994)
Authors: John Joseph Collins, Adela Yarbro Collins, and Frank M. Cross
Amazon base price: $50.00
Average review score:

Massive, authoritative, comprehensive
This book is massive, but justifies its size by giving a thorough and comprehensive survey of one of the strangest and most incomprehensible books of the Bible. It covers every aspect that would interest the diligent Bible scholar. Beginners will find it very tough going! Collins believes that Daniel himself had no hand in writing the book, but that it was the product of the age of the Maccabean struggle. However, he presents all the evidence and arguments fully, being fair to those of a more conservative viewpoint. What you will not find in this book is an attempt to show that Daniel was successfully predicting events in the 20th century or even further in the future.

What a blessing!
This commentary is one of the most user friendly commentaries I have been ever privilged to use. It is especially helpful in helping the user determine exactly what the Scriptures teach and not what the scholars say they teach. You are led to come to your own conclusions. It is written in a devotional style that makes it very friendly to use for your day by day personal devotional time and yet it is scholarly and informative. Since several different points of view are presented it can be used by the entire body of Christ without fear of being unduly influenced by any one particular doctrinal viewpoint.

Want to See Into the Future?
Cho is at his best in this book about Daniel.

Clear, compelling, and complete describe his authoritative accounts of one of God's beloved. Daniel's life is an example to all believers. His faith, his steadfast service, and his steady walk with the Lord are all worthy of study and emulation.

Cho describes in detail the revelations and symbolism contained in the book of Daniel; especially those which point toward the end times - these days we are in. Drawing from the book of Revelation and other biblical references, Cho unveils the mysteries in a clear, easy-to-understand way.

Along with "Fourth Dimension", "Prayers that Bring Revival", and
"The Apocalyptic Prophecy", this is one of Cho's best works. Enjoy a peek into the future as well as the past!

The Danton Case/Thermidor: Two Plays
Published in Paperback by Northwestern University Press (June, 1989)

Amazon base price: $21.00

Overlooked Masterpiece
Brilliant, obsessive and painfully overlooked as a playwright, Stanislawa Przybyszewska was able to turn her life time fascination with the Revolution into a compelling if highly idiosyncratic recounting of 1794. Very difficult to understand for people with little background, absolutely mind-blowing for those who have studied the era. She writes as if she were talking to Committee of Public Safety. Although both plays leave a bit to be desired in the way of historical accuracy and her Robespierrism gets on your nerves, few authors are able to so successfully live in the lives and times of their characters and so keenly convey the historical ambiance and psychological nuances. Nervy, haunting and brilliant, Stanislawa's highly personal telling sheds light on our own troubled century as much as Robespierre's. A must read for anyone interested in the failure of radical social change.

A forgotten treasure
It took me many years of searching to find my 1906 edition of Herminie Templeton's (before she married Judge Kavanagh) adventures of that daring Tipperary man named Darby O'Gill among the Fairies of Sleive-na-mon. For many years after I guarded that volume as one of my most precious treasures. Now thanks to the kind folks at One Faithful Harp Press, I can have a copy that I feel comfortable lending to my friends or even giving to my 10 year old to read.

"Darby O'Gill & the Good People" (along with "Ashes of Old Wishes" which was published more than 20 years later) is the basis for the 1959 Disney film "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" but it is so much richer than that charming children's film. It is a collection of fairy stories to be sure, but even more it is a celebration of Catholic Ireland, and the goodness and morality of the turn of the century Irish peasant.

If you can muster the accent, I urge you to read this book to your children aloud. They will never forget it, as I didn't when I was grown.

Time Made Visible in a Dazzling Way
This is a wonderful collection of poems of great variety, dexterity and eloquence. Many themes are present, from the evolutionary insights of "Evidence," which vividly evoke the sensory experience of our Neanderthal ancestors or earlier ones, resurrecting prehistoric remains into the immediacy of flesh and firelight, to subtle evocations of immortality in simple labor (and, by implication, art) in "A Pile of Rocks." From the poignant and beautifully imaged sonnet on the fragility of memory in an academic - or any other - setting, "Philosophy," to the evocative lament of time's passage in "Emblems," to the incandescent, bird-inspired energy of "Called Back," with its "silky wash of dots banding the heavens...Time made visible as space...the oldest light."
The depth of the finest poems in this volume is startling and profound. Phrases triumph in unexpected and inspired ways, even as the subject, form and scope of individual poems keep the reader invigorated, surprises on every page as tantalizing in their rhythms as the turbulent surf beautifully photographed on the cover. I heartily recommend this volume, whether as an introduction to, or for continued appreciation of, the work of one of our greatest poets.
