The Uralic Languages (Routledge Language Family Descriptions)
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (February, 1998)
Author: Daniel Mario Abondolo
Amazon base price: $225.00
Average review score:

Excellent, but not for the impoverished scholar
For linguists interested in Uralic languages, this is an outstanding reference with essays written mostly by top scholars in the field--Pekka Sammallahti for Saami might be singled out in particular. Unfortunately, Routledge has priced the book staggeringly high. No scholar with just a casual interest in the field and without very deep pockets could afford it. Consult it in the library--if you can get your library to buy it. The only flaw I find with _The Uralic Languages_ is the lack of a chart setting out the traditional Uralicists' phonetic transcription system. Knowledge of this system is indispensable for reading older Uralic scholarship, and a survey like this would have been a good place to include it.

It's for kids, but I like it too
I'm thirty-something just learning piano. It's hard for an adult to learn. I ran across "Piano Classics" and thumbed through it, and I knew it'd be a nice way to learn some classic tunes while learning the keys, as there are very few 16th notes (or worse!) and very few stacked notes to fuss with in these arrangements. Plus I knew most of the songs.

This book is aimed at kids (so ignore the drawings), but I think any adult learning to play piano would like it as a way to get one's feet wet. You'll really like the smattering of tunes (there are over 80 in this book). And the fact that you'll have heard most of them makes them easier to pick up and play.

However these classical tunes have been tremendously altered for the book, so you're not going to get what Van Cliburn plays (not even close). But that's OK, as the idea behind this book is to introduce you to some classical tunes, explain some of the terms and give a little info about classical music, and get you to play the songs a little.

You won't learn how to play---you must be familiar with reading music on a basic level. This book gives you very basic but worthwhile material to play and master before moving on...

A really good book!
This was a really good book. Here are some of the reasons I like it.

It has to photos of the car, both different years, They have them going all the way back to about 1992, and it showes the reviews on it. Not just a little bit of reviewing, but a huge review. I didn't even know that the Ford Windstar was going to replace the Ford Aerostar for 1995, and I have been studying cars since 1999, and my family owns a Ford Aerostar. It was very helpful. I found out what happened to cars that were made in the 80's. Very good book. I just really liked it. I think its the best used car book you can get!

Experience is needed
This is a great book, but I wouldn't recommend it for an absolute beginner. The topics covered in the first chapter is a slight review of C++, then the author dives straight into the world of Motif. I highly recommend you are both familiar with Motif, Xlib, and C++ before reading this book. The author attempts to lower the learning curve, but object oriented programming with GUI development can never be made too easy. Within the last few chapters topic covered are more advanced classes and design of classes with the Xlib toolkit. I recommend this book as a quick way to tie together what you alredy know in Motif and C++. But would recommend you purchases the Motif reference manual along with this as the authore makes many references to commands and libraries which you may have probably long forgotten.

A solid strategy guide with minor flaws
Overall this was a helpful and solid strategy guide. Maps are presented for each battle, along with enemies present and their levels etc., recommended skills, recommended player level, and coordinates for all treasure and hidden treasure on the maps. The maps themselves are presented mainly in a top down form with an addition screenshot providing a more 3d angle. Interludes between battles are also written after the appropriate battle. This book also lists each weapon and armour in the game along with the corresponding skills and stats for each and an overall table of skills with a 5 star rating system used for each skill. Secret areas and the how to's for each are presented. There are two minor flaws I found with this book. The first is even though the book presents an excellent flowchart of how to get each ending it doesn't tell you what each ending is. The other flaw is, as previously mentioned, the book presents recommended skills you should have for each battle, but it would have been nice if it had a better section on character development in the sense of weapon building and skill transferring. Overall if you are looking for a good strategy guide for this game this title is well worth the money.

Vassar College, Ny (College History)
Published in Paperback by Arcadia (April, 2001)
Authors: Maryann Bruno and Elizabeth A. Daniels
Amazon base price: $19.99
Average review score:

Entertaining, profusely illustrated.
At only 128 pages and mostly pictures, this book can easily be read in a single sitting. This is an interesting book, but I suspect its appeal will be limited to students, alumni, and faculty of Vassar. The authors detail the growth of Vassar College under its various Presidents. They include some very interesting little historical facts and the photography is wonderful. While the authors address changes occurring on the campus of the college over the years, the focus of the authors is upon the campus and its students. This book tells the story of people, buildings and groundbreaking ceremonies. If you are looking for a more interpretative history of Vassar College and how this institution has affected higher education in this country, particularly the higher education of women, you will not find it in this book. Although it was not what I expected when I purchased the book, I did enjoy it and I do recommend it to those individuals wishing to learn more about the campus.

Pithy Comments on the Occupation of Knoxville
Two g-grand nieces of Ellen House discovered these diaries in her trunk upon the death of an aunt. What a find! Ellen House had strong opinions and voiced them. The Siege of Knoxville (November 1863) is covered and Sutherland's footnotes make for GOOD history. Don't think, you WWII GIs out there, that "scuttlebutt" started in "our" war. There was plenty during the Civil War, some preposterous. Sutherland provides good interpretive notes. Highly recommended! Four stars only because there are a few gaps in Ellen's coverage of the War in Knoxville, but who can blame her. Deprivation was the order of the day.

Voices from the Garden: Stories of Becoming a Vegetarian

A feeling of camaraderie
A commonly held stereotype of a vegetarian is that of a tree-hugging hippie wearing a tie dyed shirt and Birkenstocks while eating granola. As is true with most sweeping generalizations, this picture far is from the truth for most vegetarians. Our community is as diverse as any other and represents many faiths, nationalities, political beliefs, and philosophies. This diversity is clearly reflected in Voices From the Garden.

Voices is a collection of essays from famous, not-so-famous, and never-heard-of vegetarians describing their transitions to plant-based diets. Every kind of vegetarian is represented in this book. Some of the contributors have been at it for sixty years; some are still in the infancy of their explorations. They represent the ecological, religious, and ethical philosophies for choosing a plant-based diet. It is difficult not to find an example of oneself in this book, and it is easy to feel a sense of community while reading the essays.

This isn't a riveting book, but it is, at times, moving, funny, serious, and informative. Voices is an easy read that leaves you with a better sense of the diverse vegetarian community and a feeling of camaraderie within it.

War of Eighteen-Twelve

A concise and valuable source.
I read this for a graduate course covering special readings in military history. Coles does an excellent job in relating the causes and consequences of an often overlooked war in the U.S. history. Coles praises the usual individuals associated with the War of 1812 (Scott, Jackson, Isaac Hull, Perry, Brock, Tecumseh) and castigates the usual suspects as well (Wilkinson, Wm. Hull, Dearborn, Procter, and James Madison and his cabinet save Monroe). There exists some errors of omission (Coles never explains why Laffite support ed Jackson at New Orleans and barely covers the war west of Lake Michigan save for one brief mention). Overall, a excellent read, especially in regards to naval operations. For a more detailed analysis, I would recommend Mahon's treatment on the war.

The Weird Sonneteers
Published in Paperback by Anamnesis Press (March, 2000)
Authors: Keith Allen Daniels, Jerry H. Jenkins, and Ann K. Schwader
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $9.30
Average review score:

Superb collection
As Keith Allen Daniels says in his introduction "most of these sonnets have a past life" but this reviewer found them all fresh and new and worth more than one visit. These three poets are clearly masters of this poetic form--which lends itself well to the diverse themes of horror and dark fantasy as envisioned by the individual authors.

But it is the distinctive storytelling of Ann K. Schwader that truly shines in "Pages from a Paperback Imagination". Her technique of overlaying contemporary heroes (Avalon, Avalon, Do You Read?) with the stuff of myth and legend is unique. The 14 lines of "Dead Girls Don't Cry" are filled with an in-depth characterization this reviewer usually only finds in novels -- and her monsters (Poraymos/The Devouring) are too real to ever be forgotten.

Powerful poetry here. Highly recommended.
