Horace : Epodes and Odes (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture , Vol 10, Latin language edition)

Good for introductory students
Garrison's layout of the text is fairly well done so that the text is easily able to be read. The commentary is, generally, useful. There are a few typos or mistakes in it, but the commentary will prove valuable to the intro student. There is sufficient aide for grammatical question and enough cultural explanations to make the book useful. Sometimes Garrison makes references to more modern works, which is less useful, yet still available. If you are a serious reader, you likely know more suitable sources already. Otherwise, for the casual reader or student who is attempting to augment proficiency, this book is useful. Fortunately, Garrison (Ode 1,11) does not fall into common convention to misaddress 'carpe diem' as sieze the day rather than the proper 'pluck the day' in the proper context.

A good text for the casual reader
Garrison's edition is well suited to the recreational reader of Latin and the non-scholar. His notes, as always, are very helpful and cover most of the gramatical and textual questions that are likely to arise for the undergraduate or secondary reader. This book, however, would have benefited from a vocabulary and a slightly larger print size for the text. A good book, but not as good as Garrison's Catullus.

Very informative and up to date
This book is a MUST have for the performance minded driver. It covers all older mods and offers some new modern tricks and ideas to bring your aging Sprite or Midget into the twenty first century. It was very easy to read and follow.
It makes a nice modern addition to any Spridget

A fine introduction to modifying the Sprite and Midget.
Mr Stapleton's aim is ambitious, to say the least. To collate the various tuning options available for an extremely popular, 40 year old car, which has been modified from day one, is quite a feat. Stapleton achieves a broad coverage by skimping on some technical nitty-gritty. The simpler mods are covered in full, and the pros and cons of all options are discussed clearly, but this is NOT a 'How-to' book, despite the title.

However, as a good, accurate introduction to the art of modifying the Spridget, this book is indispensable. It's full of pictures, and will certainly bring the novice Spridget owner a good understanding of the ins and outs of performance modification. I highly recommend it. G

Nice narration, interesting stories
First of all there is a review of this book by someone that, apparently, didn't read it. The book has no pictures, it is like the title imply ILUSTRATED. The ilustrations are good but I wouldn't say awesome. Some of them are available as posters in various stores. The stories are interesting and present the Labrador in other aspects of life and not only in the hunting field which I consider a very good thing. One thing is for sure, this is a Labs lovers book. Believe me, if you don't love the breed you probably won't enjoy the book as much. If you do love Labs, as much as I do, you'll enjoy the reading and ilustrations. But I wouldn't say this is an exceptional book. It is good.

Wonderful
When I bought this book I didnt know how good the pictures were. Now I know thier AWSOME! You'll never regret buying this WONDERFUL book!

From Armonk, huh?
I was interested in the above review until I noticed it comes from the New York town that the publisher hails from. A coincidence? Possibly--but what else is in Armonk besides M.E. Sharpe?

Choice Magazine Review
Far exceeding the author's objective--to present a primer on the state and causes of income inequality in the US-this work by an eminent scholar addresses in masterful fashion the many factors related to these issues in a style comprehensible to both the public and experts. Ryscavage presents not only his own prestigious studies but also summarizes and aluates the major works of others. His study provides a strong bridge over the disconnect between economists' views and popular conceptions that ascribe income inequality to corporate greed, soaring profits, deregulation, waning power of unions, and the demise of the so-called social contract between workers and employers. Instead, the author examines relevant measures showing and causing income disparity. ... A must purchase for economic and public policy collections. All libraries. Choice

Not very deep, but an amusing period piece
I bought this book because I like science fiction with spiritual themes, a la Matrix. The premise, of God (or at least an infinite creative force) being trapped in the psyche of a man who does not realize it, seemed promising to me. However, the book doesn't really live up to the depth of the basic idea, and by the end, I didn't much care whether the entire world was annihilated or not. The most amusing aspect, it turned out, is its style: an outrageously hipped-out, over-the-top pastiche of late 60s youth culture gone bad. Imagine the Summer of Love meeting Nero's Rome and you'll get the idea. Here's a little sample: "The sexcrucible on the cogcart supplicated, 'How long, O, Tehporp, before we can reach the Primary through His Inverse Vessel?'" The whole book isn't quite like that, but believe me there's more than enough of it to win some sort of prize.

I love you Papere!
This book is one of many written by my grandfather, Daniel F. Galouye. My grandfather passed away when I was a little girl and my memories of him are few and precious. I have read most of his works and have enjoyed them all. One of his books, Simulacron-3, was made into a movie entitled the Thirteenth Floor, which will be released this May. I hope you enjoy his books as much as I do. I love and miss you Papere

good introduction
I took Prof. Jacob's undergraduate class in atmospheric chemistry at Harvard. Not surprisingly, this was the book we used. Overall it is well written and a good introduction to the field, and is relatively inexpensive for a textbook.

As the other reviewer pointed out, the exercises are very good. Occasionally the book saves critical issues for the exercises which depending on your point of view could be a weakness. Also, some of the chapters are lacking in depth: the book is adopted from his lecture notes and indeed it often reads as a set of notes and is brief and terse in some parts.

An excellent addition to the field
I used Prof. Jacob's pre-press web edition of this book to teach 20+ bachelor's students Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen during the fall of 1999. I have found it difficult to find an appropriate introductory level text for this class, and have usually been borrowing material for the class from four or five other books. The book is well written and a pleasure to read, but the real treat are the problems at the end of each chapter. Jacob has scoured the literature and illustrates important points in each chapter using recent advances in the field. The students and their instructor learned a great deal from the author's insightful choice of topics. The book reflects the author's perspective of the field, and is longer on atmospheric physics and shorter on chemistry than the title implies. I would have liked more information on aerosols, and the students definitely would have liked more introductory material on chemistry. Overall I would recommend this book to professionals interested in learning more about global warming or ozone depletion, and to teachers looking for a good book for bachelors or new graduate students.

A Book With A Choice
This book was fun to read. It's perfect for any nine year old who wants to read a good book with a wide selection of of stories. It's not 12 books all crammed into one it's 12 parts of books that lead you to one (Or how ever many you want) very good books. They picked really good parts of each book. It has parts of books from authors like Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, Patricia Maclachlan and Danial Pinkwater and many more.

It's Fine To Be Nine
It's Fine To Be Nine is a wonderful book, as I've come to expect from authors such as these! As a mother of a nine year old (going on 20! ), I read many books when I WAS her age. Many by authors of It's fine to be nine.

This book, like the others, lives up to the fine writing and imagination-holding in the mind of a child.

Well written and attention grabbing, I, as a mom, recommend this to all children in this age group!

These books make me remember the times of MY childhood. The times that are FUN to remember.

Also, as a mother, I know it is SAFE to read by books by Judy Blume, therefore, I had no qualms of ordering it.

Kudos! Sheila

The Jacksonian Period introducing the themes
The Jacksonian Promise: America 1815-1840 covers everything: optimism with the Erie Canal, the technology improvements, the commerce, the enlightenment, religious developments, and modern politics. It is best defined as in-between textbook that does not follow everything in the Antebellum America, but enough that it's a good book to fall back onto. The book was a required reading for my History 414 (Antebellum United States: 1800-1860). I enjoyed reading the book, but at times I skipped pages to keep up. I suggest reading chapters nine and ten.

What would you read in the Jacksonian Promise? For example in Chapter 10: Descents into Discord, it covers the Democrats and Whigs, party politics, the reassessment of character, the constriction of choices, slavery and sectional cleavage, and toward Civil War.

Keller's writing is smooth and the themes are well organized. If you are looking for a book on the Jacksonian era that is a cheap and well worth the price this is the book for you. I am giving it four stars because it's well organized that you can be half asleep and copy down some good notes, the price, and sometimes it is very interesting to read. A reminder the book is actually only 204 pages because the rest are the bibliography and index.

A nice intro to the period
Argues that the central feature of the Jacksonian period was its forward-looking quality, how hopeful and optimistic people were about the future. Does quite a good job of surveying the literature that's out there on the Jacksonian period. If you need a relatively short introduction to the themes of this period in American history, then this is a good place to begin

Fascinating complement to Sun's 3D tutorial
After playing with this book, and the excellent Java 3D tutorial that Sun offers for free, I've been able to make very simple 3D applets. Most of the information to create the applet came from this book; the Sun tutorial is very good, but sparse in some details which this book covers nicely.

Most useful was the description and detailing of the scenegraph, which made it easy to do certain things in my applets. The book also covers more advanced geometric concepts, so advanced programmers should be able to glean much more from the book than I have for now.

All in all, a fascinating complement to the Sun tutorial. If you plan to program with Java 3D components, this book will be very useful.

Required Reading for 3D Graphics Developers
The Java 3D API from Sun provides an object oriented abstraction around OpenGL and DirectX functions. Sun provides a fairly good introduction to Java 3D in their documentation. However, it can be difficult to find more advanced information on Java 3D as some of the best information can only be found in newsgroups. This book provides the information that anyone working with Java 3D absolutely needs. The author has covered all the bugs, workarounds, pitfalls, design problems etc. that aren't found in the Sun documentation. Starting with the basics of 3D graphics programming, the book moves quickly on to the heart of the Java 3D API, the Scenegraph. The author does a good job of explaining this key class and how to use it to create 3D scenes. The book then moves on to explain creating geometric shapes, defining light sources, creating textures, attaching behavior to objects, interacting with objects, and much more. Each chapter contains code samples highlighting the topics of that chapter. As a novice to Java 3D, I was overwhelmed for a little while but the code samples and the author's excellent explanations of the code kept me from becoming lost. This is definitely a book that should be read in front of the computer while working on the examples. Any experienced Java developer (even if you have no experience in graphics programming) who is interested in developing 3D games or scientific or architectural 3D applications should get this book.
