What Makes a Leader? (HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition)

The five components of emotional intelligence
Daniel Goleman is co-chairman of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations, based at Rutgers University. He is the author of the bestsellers 'Emotional Intelligence' (1995) and 'Working with Emotional Intelligence' (1998). This article was published in the November-December 1998 issue of the Harvard Business Review.

"... most effective leaders are alike in one crucial way: they all have a high degree of what has come to be known as emotional intelligence." Thankfully, according to the author, people can develop their emotional intelligence. In this article the author discusses the five components of emotional intelligence: (1) self-awareness, (2) self-regulation, (3) motivation, (4) empathy, and (5) social skill. Each of these components are discussed in detail and complemented with examples. In addition, the author complements this with a discussion on whether you can learn emotional intelligence: "It's important to emphasize that building one's emotional intelligence cannot - will not - happen without sincere desire and concerted effort."

Nice, clear article on the softer side of leadership. The author explains that leadership is not just built on IQ and technical ability, but needs a healthy proportion of emotional skills. Readers have the choice to continue with Daniel Goleman's books or his 2000-article 'Leadership that Gets Results'. The author has a understandable US-English writing style.

Man Of God
This book is the ultimate! Where have such a book been? It is just what it's hyped to be. It raises a lot of hidden issues and explains the difficult parts of the Bible. We've all heard what Mom said and what Dad said, what the Pastors said, but What would Jesus say? Very good book. P.S. the correspondence course is awesome and the certificate is out of sight. It arrives ASAP The chapter on the blood is remarkaable!

About Sharing One's God-ness with Others ...
When God Says No is a book that expresses a most profound truth with a simplicity that is most appealing. When I received a copy, I read it from cover to cover in a little over an hour. But, that said, it's the kind of book that one keeps near and reaches for again and again - when a moment of crisis arises, or when a word of comfort is needed.

The author shares himself with the reader. His rich experience of both God and humanity is caught up in the book he writes. He shares both his goodness and his God-ness with the reader, even as he invites the reader to an in-depth personal relationship with the God Who allows the reality of pain to be experienced by us all, as we journey on - into life forever.

It's okay to ask
You will not want to put this book down. There are a lot of books written that help us with grief. This book is a book we all can relate to in so many ways - whether you are facing grief or not. What I love most about this book is Daniel Johnson states that it is okay to ask "Why?" Life is hard. This book helps to make sense out of some of the difficulty.

BEAUTIFUL BOOK--surely a Classic!
This is one of my favorite books which I have read atleast 10 times. Whenever I feel down I read this book and it teaches me new things each time. This book deals with the (islamic) sufi "code of conduct" and addresses the issue of how we should live every day of our life with mindfullness of Allah, rather than just go through each day mindlessly, like an automaton -- hense the title, "when you hear hoofbeats, think of a zebra" (instead of a horse). Shems explains through beautiful sufi stories which will be with you for a long time. I highly recommend this book to any muslim (with esoteric outlook) looking for inspiration and meaning of life.

"To give the gift of life" leaves "Hope"!
The author of "Where Has All The Unicorns Gone?" has the unique ability to combine a fairy tale atmosphere while dealing with the very real life issues that confront all of us, even children.

This story of a sick prince has a very touching and happy outcome and is filled with delightful pictures. The underlying theme "to give the gift of life" is present for even the youngest of readers and gives our children's world an early message of "Hope".

While A Tree Was Growing
A great book that teaches both the history of the world and at the same time the importance of preserving our forests. The book is about one giant sequoia and the great historical events that have occurred during its lifetime. The tree is still standing. The book covers all that the tree has had to endur (insects, fires)and while it was growing Jesus was born, Cleopatra was born, the Wright Brothers flew, man walked on the moon and we were born. Beautiful illustrations and a wonderful tear out time line.

Whitebread Protestants: Food and Religion in American Culture

Fun, thoughtful, unexpected
That bread and wine are at the center of most Christian religious services is not news. But taking that seriously -- the centrality of food in worship, in the communal experience of faith -- gives Sack's book a window into the what we want from our churches and how our churches our drawn into the rest of our lives.

Five chapters, each in a somewhat different voice, look at the way food functions in mainline Protestant churches. It reaches back into the 1800's, at the fierce battles by those who argued that Jesus must have been a temperance crusader who never would let alcohol cross His lips. It moves through the details of Atlanta's current church-based efforts to feed the hungry, and the tension between working to feed the hungry and working to end hunger. It stops by the suburbs of Chicago, to churches where professional cafeterias have replaced potluck dinners. Along the way, you get great anecdotes, solid writing, and a lot to think about.

The simple strength of the narrative alone makes the book worth buying. But the insights you pick up along the way are what will fuel your dinner conversations for some time afterwards.

Vision of art
Childern of the Iquisition was a book that I had bought several years ago. It had wonderful art. I would love to purchase this book for the art alone in order to display on my walls at home. My boyfriend and I have a unique style of decorating our home. This book would be a great display. A freind had claimed this book and I've wondered whether I would ever come accross this book again. I am hoping....

Really Excellent
As we grow up with the notion of a loving God only one thing goes on tormenting us why does God allow us to suffer. This book really answers a lot of things which trouble us, the notion of what true love really means with freedom and also makes us think why dont we do something to remove suffering
