Lives of Service: Stories from Maryknoll

A Photojournalist's Look at the Maryknoll World.
'Lives of Service' gives us an inspiring glimpse of the world of the Maryknoll family of priests, sisters, brothers and lay missioners who work around the world. Jim Daniels with his professional experience as a photographer and writer presents before the reader seven photo-essays that tell the tale of men and women who live the Gospel message in far away lands. He also gives a good introduction to the Maryknoll Missioners. The lives and works of these men and women are truly inspiring as it is presented in photographs and stories in this book. Fr Bob McCahill in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Sr. Juana Encalada among the AIDS patients of Cambodia, Bro. John Beeching among the refugees of Thailand, Peter and Johanna, a missioner couple in Tanzania, Sr. Melinda Roper in Panama, Susan Nagele a lay missioner among the tribals of Sudan, and Fr Vince Cole among the Asmat people of West Papua; all of them are sure to set fire to the spirit of love and service within us. The book is a beautiful tribute to the magnificent work of the Maryknolls.

Stories and Images of Quiet Service
No matter your religious conviction, you will not fail to be moved by this book. Jim Daniels' words and images bring alive the difficult worlds in which a few Maryknoll brothers and sisters conduct their lives, and in so doing, change the lives of others. This is far more than a coffee table book. Although the photographs alone are stunning - vibrant, colorful, and beautifully composed - it is their companionship with the stories that allow the reader a humbling glimpse into lives motivated by true giving. Daniels spent four years living with, photographing, and writing about the Maryknoll in Thailand, Bangladesh, Sudan, Cambodia, West Papua, Tanzania, and Panama. These priests, Brothers, Sisters, and lay missioners work with people afflicted by HIV/AIDS, unspeakable poverty, and political strife. Daniels found them always to be sensitive to traditional culture and religion, and his admiration is apparent. The Maryknoll brand of Catholicism is quiet, embracing differences, and teaches by example. In reading each story, you will feel as if you have stepped for a little while into his subjects' worlds and watched as they went about their days. Daniels' gift as a photographer is his ability to capture joy, radiance, and human dignity in the most dire of circumstances. The beauty and peace of a young woman's face as she lies dying of AIDS on a cot in Phnom Penh; the strength and kindness in Father Bob Cahill's face and he carries a young man suffering from cancer to a hospital in Bangladesh; the joy in the faces of children who, like children everywhere, are amazingly resilient in heartbreaking circumstances. Like the faith that drives the lives of the Maryknoll, the reader will find this book to be a journey where we learn that hope resides in connection and sharing, regardless of religion, culture, or ethnicity.

The best of the worst!
Not being a fan of underground comics at all, I was a little hesitant to even open this book. Within seconds though, I found someone else out there was equally as twisted and full of angst as myself - and funny as ever. This is a 'best-of' type collection of some fantastic and well-contrived comics with a strong and bitter dark sarcasm throughout. Touching on many modern American social issues, this guy Clowes hits the nail on the head every time with his twisted insight into the human condition. No household is complete without this work.

Brilliant artwork, brilliant writing
Discovering the work of Daniel Clowes was like when I first heard The Replacements. I was actually angry I hadn't known sooner. This collection won't have everyone's favorite "Eightball" moments but it's an amazing collection.

Some of the topics really touch home.
After reading a few poems by Jim Daniels, I became curious as to his motivation and if the poems reflected his personal experiences. My interpretive writing teacher, Boyd C. Allen, was able to have him speak to my class. After he read a few of his digger poems, someone asked if digger was a real person. Jim Daniels replied, "mostly." He told us that he composed digger from many people he knew and from many personal experiences, but where it sounds really good, that is where Jim Daniels would improvise and exaggerate his story a bit to make it sound better. For the most part, his poems were written from personal experiences, or at least what he remembers from them. That is what makes his poems so real and great. He is showing that he is just one of us.

A great depiction of black life in Detroit.
Actually, reading this book of poems has me asking the question; Is Mr Daniels using his personal experience about his black life in Pittsburg?

An enjoyable, if predictable, thriller.
Recently orphaned, seventeen-year-old Allison James moves to New Orleans to live with her aunt. She meets twin brothers Jean-Paul and Isnard DuFort, and Michelle, a girl her age who warns her away from them. Meanwhile, Allie's aunt tells her that it is Allie's destiny to be a Voodoo priestess, something Allie is not so sure she wants to be. But she may have little choice - a huge battle between good and evil is coming up, and Allie is caught right in the middle. The one problem I had with this book was that it was somewhat predictable, but it was very enjoyable, and Daniel Parker is a good horror author.

Awsome!
I loved this book! I was in the hospital when I read it and my mom had gotten it for me so I didn't know where she got it. When I got out I tryed to look for it but couldn't find it. This book will leave you in suspence! I have tryed so hard to find the other books to this series for about five years now. I have just found one of them. Trust me, if you like books that will leave in in suspence... this is the book for you! Kitty

The Inside Story
This is an excellent account of the way things really happen. The media sometimes beats the political drum so loudly about the pharmaceutical industry being an evil empire that the other side of the story is never heard. Here is an inside look from the perspective of dedicated scientists, committed business executives, and the people they serve. If you want to base your opinions on all aspects of the issue, this is required reading.

This book will offer you an inside view....
As an employee within the pharmaceutical industry, this book will offer the reader an inside view of how a product goes from the research phase to finally, the consumer. As a father to a child with cancer, this book offers hope that someday a cure will be developed to eliminate cancer. A must read!

Gleevec Book
As someone who has CML, the disease that Gleevec was developed for, and as someone for whom Gleevec has been a life-saver, I can attest to the the fact that this book is a valuable and interesting read.

This book makes note of the important part the internet played in the rapid FDA approval of this "proof of concept" drug. It also tells the personal story of how several persons that have used this drug lives' have been affected. Some parts of this book may bring tears to your eyes.

It is becoming apparent that Gleevec will be of help against several other diseases, besides just CML.

As a "proof of concept" drug, Gleevec is truly unique, promising and exciting, and that fact alone makes the telling of its story so worthwhile.

I am totally satisfied with this book, and am glad that I bought it.

An Exceptional 30
Wren and Greenwood have written one of the most informative I have read in recent years. With brevity but precision and insight, they examine 30 people who have indeed "shaped modern business." The excellent material is presented within 12 chapters which range from "Inventors" (Eli Whitney and Thomas Alva Edison) to "Guru" (peter F. Drucker).. Along the way, they discuss a number of especially influential persons about whom many readers probably know little (if anything), such as Alexander T. Stewart, James J. Hill, Ezra Cornell, Lillian and Frank Gilbreth, Chester I. Barnard, and Mary Parker Follett.

All by itself, the Introduction is well worth the cost of the book. Near its conclusion, Wren and Greenwood observe: "Taken as a whole, there is no single theme to this book; rather, it is a narrative with multiple themes as a story of American business enterprise unfolds. Beginning with the selection of inventors, we see how the process of invention and innovation changes the way we live, creates entirely new industries, and must be continuous as the competitive environment changes. Makers [e.g. Henry Ford] are those who who change ideas into markets for the marketplace -- an evolutionary process that accompanies the shift from small-to-large-scale manufacturing and then to the assembly line. Sellers [e.g. Richard W. Sears] take those products to market and allow us to see the sales and distribution innovations that have enabled modern consumers to live better than the monarchs of centuries before. Inventors, makers, and sellers need the movers [e.g. Edward H. Harriman], those who create the time and place utility; and all need the communicators [e.g. Alexander Graham Bell], who connect the parts into a whole."

Because this book was first published in 1998, many readers (I among them) would have expected the inclusion of other "management innovators" such as Donald Dell, Walt Disney, Bill Gates, Sam Walton, and Jack Welch. Perhaps they will be among those discussed in a sequel to this volume. Nonetheless, each of the 30 whom Wren and Greenwood do include is eminently worthy. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Stuart Crainer's The Management Century, James Tobin's Great Projects: The Epic Story of the Building of America, from the Taming of the Mississippi to the Invention of the Internet, and Andrea Gabor's The Capitalist Philosophers: The Geniuses of Modern Business -- Their Lives, Times, and Ideas.

History of Modern Management
Every manager should read this illuminating and extremely important book. Daniel A.Wren and Ronald G.Greenwood give tomorrow's leaders indispensable lessons from 'the people and ideas that have shaped modern business.'

They write that "our goal is to portray a selection of individuals whose ideas have made a difference in the way we teach and practice business management. In selecting these figures, we realize that it would be impossible to chronicle all of their activities; we could have chosen other individuals of equal stature as well. We have kept in mind an audience of contemporary managers, aspiring managers, and students of management who wish to gain a historical perspective on their profession by sketching the people and ideas that contributed to the formation of modern management" (from the Preface).

In this context, Wren and Greenwood divide their book into two parts:

* Part One- In this part, they trace the beginnings of American enterprise in inventing, manufacturing, selling, transportation, communication, and financing. They argue that these fourteen individuals set a pattern for others to follow as U.S. business enterprise grew.

* Part Two- In this part, in order to portray the search for better ways to manage, they present stories of other influential individuals. Here, they argue that these representatives played a pioneering role in shaping modern managerial practices.

Highly recommended.

Covers M & A from A-Z
This book covers the full scope of Merger & Acquisition work from A to Z. It would be useful for lawyers or HR professionals or execs who want to get the people side of things right. Filled with real-life examples and forms. I wish I had had this book when I was going through my first deal- it gives you a good overview of what to expect and is written in plain English.

Unusually comprehensive
This was an very comprehensive overview of the entire area of mergers & acquisitions, written in easy-to-read terms. It covered not only the HR side of doing deals, but also included information about leadership, employee communications, merging compensation and pay systems, and retaining talent. The book also has an extensive appendix with "how to" documents included which will make the jobs of many HR professionals much easier in the future. This is a book written for many different types of professionals- from executives to lawyers to HR professionals to internal communicators.

Text married to Illustration for a first rate performance!
Extremely entertaining with a dash of looking over your shoulder paranoia, Reminds me of what David Lynch would do if he was a cartoonist!

great! funny! a ripsnort of a book!
The "Lloyd Llewellyn" stories are some of the funniest and sharpest stories iv'e read in comics.Clowes is a man that has no problem making his stories flow seamlessly in terms of his narrative and art. It is always interesting and enjoyable. this book is seconded only by one of his other books "like a velvet glove cast in iron". this is a lighter story about and out of luck writer and his adventures. Its feels honest and, like so much of Clowes' work it has a strange haunting quality that only Clowes can get.

Providing ideas of intermediary firm
This book provides concepts of intermediary firm and its functions in economy. The author starts by introducing Princing Mechanism and Adjustment (with uncertainry) in the first part. He give use a fancy applications in Economic Theory (Gen. Eqlm.) and competition among intermediaries in part II. Part III, he seperates the concepts of matching and searching. Part IV, Adverse Selection and Moral Harzard problems are also given. Part V is Transaction Cost. Part VI is Agency Theory. All are presented with intermediary concepts. The author gives ideas about intermediary in many aspects by collecting lots of papers and conceptualization of thems. The concepts can be used in financial and physical markets. It is indispensable for students who want to study Market Microstructure, Intermediary and E-commerce Concept.

A theory of intermiadiation
Intermediaries play a significant role in market economies. The author identifies that role and develops a conceptual framework of the major functions of intermediaries in markets. The main idea, which goes beyond the classical dichotomy of firms vs. markets, is simple but powerful: firms create and manage markets. I think it is a book that should be read by everyone interested in understanding how markets work.
