enamored of Millay
Daniel Mark Epstein, like so many men of her own time, is obviously enamored of Edna St. Vincent Millay. He urges that she be restored to the "canon",although her work has not been lauded in recent years.

The intense, highly emotional poet comes alive in the pages of his well-researched book. She comes to us as a rebel, determined to live on her own terms, to make love with the freedom of a man,to explore the ecstatic heights of feeling. (Shelley, the author tells us, was her idol.)

A central point that I feel Epstein misses is that, although she may have escaped the feminine role dictated by conventions of her time, she did not escape her own compulsion to make the search for love the driving force of her actions. Her poetry also has as its overriding theme, romantic and sexual love. For this reason she missed achieving stature as a great poet. Even though she possessed a great facility for language, her works are too limited in scope.

Her eventual descent into alcoholism and drug addiction can serve as a cautionary tale against the wild self-indulgence and perpetual adolescence that plagued Millay. It must be said, however, that her verbal gifts were so great that even in the midst of her addled despair in later life, she was able still to produce, although the work then was of lesser quality.

Kudoes for Epstein's carefully researched, comprehensive biography.

Comprehensive Survey of This Poet's Life
This biography was a fast and furious read, due to the great anecdotes as well as the tightly-written analysis. Ms. Millay's life was a whirlwind and many heretofore unknown facts and episodes are revealed, adding richness to the typical chronological description of this writer's life. Ms. Millay was more than a writer, she was a full-blown creative personality, in a time when to do so as a woman from a modest background was virtually unheard of. Even for those who do not know her poems or do not usually read literary biography, this book documents a fascinating woman's life and is well worth picking up.

Terrific reading
Daniel Mark Epstein brings a special understanding to Edna St Vincent Millay's biography by virtue of being a poet himself. I think that's why this book is in many ways superior to the Nancy Mitford book.

Edna St Vincent Millay was not only a great person of words, but a great seductress and everyone, male and female alike, fell under her spell. Apparently, accordingly to this book, she managed to live up to their expectations quite well. Mr Epstein matches the love poems to the folks they were written for and gives the details of the various affairs. It may not sound interesting, but it is quite interesting - especially since M's Millay seemed to have a weakness for men who were not quite as talented as she was. The background behind "Fatal Interview" and the story of her (apparently) one love she lost before_she_ was ready to is quite an interesting read by itself.

Mr Epstein focuses on M's Millay as sort of a self made goddess and how her various affairs shaped her writing. M's Mitford focuses on how M's Millay's relationship with her mother shaped her life. Both of these are very interesting and I'd advise reading them consecutively and draw your own conclusions. In some respects, I think Mr Epstein is correct in what he presumes, but the same can be said of M's Mitford.

Throw yourself into the words and life of Edna St Vincent Millay - you'll find yourself awash with her beautiful poetry and prose and this book will help you make sense out of it.

The Celling of America: An Inside Look at the U.S. Prison Industry

Some good information, but hardly flawless
A look at the prison industry from the inside is a nice idea, and the articles here are chock full of information one hardly hears in the mainstream media. The responses to criticisms of prison TVs and weightrooms are interesting and thought-provoking. On the other hand, many of the authors seem to believe prisoners deserve as much freedom as those outside, that they should be treated the same. While the rights of prisoners are obviously being abused, the notion that criminals shouldn't be punished for their crimes is a strange one. Also, many of the writers have an obvious socialist agenda that ruins the quality, message and objectiveness of some pieces. Overall, worth reading, and a good look at the prison industry (and other industries that use prison labor), but far from a complete or unbiased view.

Future textbook for students of American history
History will not look kindly on today's prisons. This book outlines how companies and politicians exploit America's most vulnerable citizens, and provides information on how to stop it. The most important non-fiction title in recent memory.

Disturbing,thought-provoking description of American prisons
This book presents a truly "inside" looks at prisons in the US. Short articles, mostly written by prisoners, tell the story of how prisons are run, managed, and what's at stake. For anyone interested in crime, punishment, human rights, or criticisms of China for using "prison labor" to manufacture goods, this volume provides plenty of well-articulated food for thought.

This book will explain what you don't know about Boltanski
I saw his exhibit in Paris a few years ago and I was intrigued about this artist. This book will give more explanation on his work and why he does it. Some of the writing can be too academic and hard to understand. There's an interview with Boltanski which I loved. He's very opinionated and an interesting artist. There's not much info on him on the internet so I'm really glad that was made.

Buy This Book !!!
A good book on an excellent artist. Why, then, only 8 / 10 ? Because the authors/contributors do not deal in-deep with certain AMBIGUITIES in Boltanski's life and art. Everybody always focusses on the quote >official< unquote biography and bibliography of Boltanski (e.g. in Lessons of Darkness). But CB himself is constantly re-arranging and reconstituting these 'facts'. Critics and curators, though, always seem to take the information for granted.

I think that CB plays a game with us, and that (t)his game is a very important part of his oeuvre. As such it should be properly documented and studied.

Beautifuly haunting book, for a beautifuly haunting artist
I have extensively researched Christian Boltanski and would highly recommend this wonderful book. It reads like an exhibition. Five stars *****

A Well-Trained Observer
Dan Ferry's fine book introduces us to John Bent, a former police detective and, more recently, a resident of a penitentiary--the result of a poor career decision. He is trying to work his way back into society via steady work for a computer outfit contracted with NASA. After realizing that something is terribly amiss among the personnel there, Bent puts his fine talents as observer and analyst to work trying to solve the murder mysteries before the culprits add his name to the growing list of late colleagues. Instinctively suspicious of everyone, though not necessarily judgmental, Bent carefully observes the behavior around him, analyzes conversation with equal artistry, considers possible motives with excellent insight, and soon has a pretty good idea of what is going on. This book gives us some good, casual entertainment, perfect for relaxation and sheer escape. The characterization is quite good, the dialogue is sharp and often hilarious, and the plot will keep your interest, even if, like me, you know less than nothing about computers. If you enjoy good murder-detective stories, then ... bon apetit!

John Bent grabs you
John Bent, former policeman and ex convict comes out of prison and grabs the reader's imagination as a computer programmer who can't let go of his previous experience as a detective. He quickly becomes involved in investigating the deaths of his coworker and the man who preceded him in his current position. The plot moves along well, the character is well drawn, but the technical aspects of computer programming take up a bit too much of the book and might be confusing to the average reader. I am looking forward to the sequel because I like John Bent and want to get to know him better!

Death on Delivery
A real page turner, once i got started i couldnt put it down. Every page had a new and exciting twist, everyone was supect, cant wait for the sequal and the movie.Get Busy Mr. Ferry Im waiting.

Entertaining, and fun¿
This is the first book written by Reece Daniel, and he is to be commended for his effort. The story of a modern day Arizona Ranger going back in time to 1882, where he is again an Arizona Ranger, is a nice twist. I like time travel stories as well as westerns, so this fits the bill.

The story is generously laced with good descriptions and attention to detail; the comedy of the main character adjusting to life of over 100 years ago is great. The relationship of Native American spiritualism and Christianity is nicely portrayed, and there is plenty of action, too. I especially liked Waddie... the drunken side-kick.

Predictably, the main character almost gets caught in on of those "space-time continuum" paradoxes, but it all works out, and the end leaves you thinking there may be a sequel in the works.

Fascinating
"Desert Sunshine" debut novel by Reece Daniel is a well-written narrative that rivals the best of Tony Hillerman. Using words, Daniel paints pictures of the beauty that abounds in and around the desert while presenting readers with a portrait of pristine lands untouched by progress. Daniel's glimpses into the life style and spirituality of the Apaches, brings a sense of reality to his story. "Desert Sunshine" is easily one of the best time travel tales that I have read. This book is part mystery, part romance, and page after page just plain great reading. Having read many stories concerning the unusual abilities of Native American Shamans, much of Daniel's narrative reads like non-fiction. Desert Sunshine is Best-Seller quality and I look forward to reading much more from this talented author.
Beverly J Scott author of "Righteous Revenge" & "Ruth Fever"

Has it all
Desert Sunshine has it all- romance and time travel wrapped within a murder mystery. The time travel aspect leads the reader to a baffling ending that Jack Finney would have enjoyed. I look forward to future works from this author.

Needs improvement
A direct quote (p. 866): Clinically, melanomas occuring on the sun-damaged skin of the face and presenting as large irregularly pigmented patches have been referred to as lentigo maligna melanoma.
Does the author know what she is writing about?
Other sections are better. E.g. I quite liked the GI tract. Nevertheless, this book, in its present shape, is a pseudo-help for residents. With so many excellent textbooks available, what is the use of a less than average one?

Required for the Pathology resident's bookshelf
This book is a must for all pathology residents, especially those starting out. It is excellent for a quick reference before sign out or conference and is a good starting point for further reading. It should be coupled with a solid surgical pathology reference book such as Sternburg.

PGY-3 Pathology Resident
This is an excellent title and should be part of the required textbook list that all pathology residents should get at the start of their residency. The bullet comment format is very useful and this text is a fine companion to the standard Anatomic Pathology text. It is also perfect for a quick review of a disease entity either at sign-out with staff or prior to a larger scope teaching session. Get this book early in the residency if at all possible.

stories of henry
aside from some poems that either copied bukowski's style or were pretty much just bad--the book has some interesting stories
overall henry was probably a pretty much a peice of sh@#t
but his writings shine thru

Nice collection
Some nice essays in here some really bad poetry (not Buk's, of course) and some good little interviews. Sheds a little more light on the The Man. Definetly worth a read, go for it.

pretty damn decent tribute
Like the other guy said: If you like Buk you'll enjoy this book. Gives you more insight/perspective.
Also, be warned, a small portion contains some awful poetry written by some of these same folks who knew the man. Definitely worth having for your collection, though. Good deal. Read it twice already. The book almost brings Buk back to us.

Engineering Vibration

Author: Daniel J. Inman

Average review score:

Great textbook
I think that it is a great textbook, which gives students a good balance between the theory and practice, with the nice emphasis of computer capabilities in the area of vibration. I like it very much and I am sure that many students in this country would share my opinion.

Outstanding Text and Reference Book
I am currently teaching the introductory course in Mechanical Vibrations at California State University, Fullerton, and chose Dr. Inman's book after evaluating several different texts. The material is well organized, there are numerous practical examples, and the book is easy to read. The book contains substantial material on nonlinear vibrations, and numerical solutions, items that are of immense practical importance. Methods of solution are covered in three different software packages, MathCAD, MATLAB and Mathematica, which, when combined with the quantity of homework problems, allows the Instructor to tailor the class to his or her own preferences.

Additionally, I am also a practicing engineer, currently employed by a manufacturer of vibration exciters, and have found the material on vibration testing to be accurate and informative. This makes the book valuable as a reference, as well as a textbook.

Explains concepts very clearly and with lots of examples
I am taking a graduate course in linear vibrations and I have been using this book because I find it way easier to understand than the more "advanced" one recommended on the course outline.

The book explains how to use MatLab for Vibration analysis, which is a very powerful tool.

Supersonic read!
If you were around aviation in Florida in the early 80's you can relate to this story. Lots of fun, action-packed. The characters don't disappoint.

Great, fast read
This book is a great read for pilots and non-pilots alike. As a pilot, I can say that the book is meticulously researched. The allure of Darrington Hunter as the "Ft Lauderdale flash" is powerful, to be sure. As Mr. Blore takes the reader on Darrington's roller coaster ride through parts unknown, the reader comes away knowing that Darrington's "immersion into the dark side" hasn't been glossed over and fabricated into something it is not. Ultimately, the book delves into a dark side that we all believe we have, but doesn't insult the reader's intelligence. This book is a must read.

DON'T MISS THIS ONE
An awesome book full of twists and turns. Follows an airline pilot down the tubes and back out again. Realistic to a "T". South America, the Caribbean and the gold coast of Florida are vividly portrayed in this soul-searching novel. What F. Scott Fitzgerald saw in the Jazz Age, Mr. Blore tells about the Me Generation. Bound to be a classic.

Comprehensive But You Are on Your Own!
I have used the other editions mainly as a reference to many medical conditons which I hear about in my practice as a psychiatrist. As usual, the latest text provides the information but there is no attempt to bullet or separate out the most important stuff - and no beautiful color diagrams as in Cecil's. Of its many strengths, the HIV chapter is authored by Anthony Fauci at NIH, a renowned international AIDS expert. If you want to keep up to date the ...price is a bargain. If you are a student choose what is most helpful to your style and use the study guide for board practice.

big and complete
Big, complete and one of the most renowned books of internal medicine. Only the index could be more completely and the pictures could have been coloured. Instead of showing the genetic background
some practical approaches should sometimes have been emphasized more.

great reference book
Briefly speaking: this book is for people who are familiar with the field of Medicine. Every few years I have to get a new edition as medicine is developing so rapidly. As I am now out of the mainstream of Medicine, when I want to look up something I read this book and the Merck Manual and I look up words I don't know in the on-line medical dictionary. That provides a fairly good intro. If I want to know more I go into the papers on PubMed. As far as I'm concerned, this book is a must-have, if you want to try to keep up with the field.
