An underrated Master.
Daniel Stern's short stories are funny, wise, fresh and more than anything else a wonderful antidote to the dry, zombie stories that have been the rule in this MFA culture of literature. And I haven't even gotten to the fact that Stern boldly uses literature and art as a sort of ironic guide for life, full of questions without any answers. He's read all the books, I mean all of them. Hopefully, Stern will be remember as part of the greatest Literary movement of the post-WW II American scene, Jewish-American writers.

A great California Indian tale
As a fourth grade teacher in California, I have the pleasure of teaching California history. This book is a great retelling of an old Miwok Indian legend set in Yosemite Valley. Locals, Robert and Daniel San Souci write and illustrate a fun story that tells of the formation of El Capitan in Yosemite. It also teaches that each individual, regardless of size can make a difference. At the end of the book is information on the Miwok tribe and a helpful list of related readings and web sites. The students love the book and it is a fun way to present a California tribe's legend.

Two Pages From Roman History: Plebs Leaders and Labor Leaders ; and, The Warning of the Gracchi
Published in Unknown Binding by New York Labor News ()
Author: Daniel De Leon
Amazon base price: $2.50
Used price: $11.17
Average review score:

About American labor history, not really about Rome
Not really a book about Roman history, but a book which uses brief examples from Roman history to introduce the author's commentary on the modern labor movement. Daniel De Leon was a central figure in the Socialist Labor Party of the U.S. during the very early 20th century. That party is still around today and they are Marxist but they reject Leninism, Stalinism, Maoism, and Trotskyism in favor of "Marxism-De Leonism". He was also a central figure in the founding of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW or Wobblies) but broke with them over the issue of increasing anarchist influence in that union. For the curious, this book is a good example of De Leon's polemical style. He harshly criticizes the labor union leaders of his day for selling out the interests of workers. His alternative is to supplant the craft unions ("labor fakers" as he calls them) with radical industrial unions organized on a socialist basis.

This is a short book which may be of interest to those interested in American labor history or in the history of the socialist movement in this country. Those looking for books on Rome will probably be disappointed.

Savings bonds are a great investment. This book proves it!
Instead of gettting a tiny 1.8% interest with your bank. This book proves the value of the world's most popular security, and how it really is a sound, safe and tax deffered investment. Most people do not realize bonds will earn interest for thirty years after their face value and have various interest rates.

Still Best of Breed
I read the first edition of this book, I guess more than 20 years ago now. I was dazzled immediately, in the very first inning, by both the prose and the great photos. The most amazing thing (to me anyway)is Nemec's historical report. Somehow even though he's writing the more recent chapters more than 10 years apart you'd never know it. You'd think of him as a 19th century guy from what else he's written, but his 1990's chapter flows with the same spark and flavor as his first chapter on the early years written way back when. Most of the other pieces hold up very well too, especially the one on DiMaggio and Richter's look at Montreal baseball before the Expos. Let's all hope this crew is still around in another decade to do another update.

Una de dos

Author: Daniel Sada

Great contemporary mexican literature
This novel is fun to read but it also is a very fine example of what an stylish writer Sada is. What I mean is that Una de dos keeps a very delicate balanace between the importance of the particular words and forms of writing Sada uses and the power of the story. Sada is one of the greatest. And Una de dos has been recently brought to the screen by the director Marcel Sisniega, starring Tiaré Sacanda and Ericka de la LLave (both mexican actresses) as the Gama identical twins that fall in love with the same man.
