One of the best biographies of St. Philip Neri avaliable.
This excellent biography of St. Philip Neri presents a complete portrait of the great 16th century "Apostle of Rome", St. Philip Neri. Rather than stressing the excessive asceticism of the time, St. Philip emphasised the great love and mercy of God, thus bringing back many people to the practise of the faith and and inspiring many to lead holy lives.

It presents the reader with a picture of St. Philip, a man both on fire for the Lord and a saint with an immense sense of humour. This is one of the best biographies of St. Philip that I've found and I reccommend it highly.

Excellent information on Penance, Justice and Righteousness
This is an excellent book on the above qualities, explaining why, in Paracelsus's eyes, God punishes certain deeds when He is interested in the eternal rather than the temporal. It also affirms that it is ultimately the actions felt in the heart, not the deeds done in the body, which are the main cruxes of the problem. I'd comment more but I'd give away too much on the book. Read it yourself!

Philosophies of Mathematics
Published in Paperback by Blackwell Publishers (November, 2001)
Authors: Alexander George and Daniel J. Velleman
Amazon base price: $31.95
Average review score:

A concise summary of key foundational issues
Eschewing interesting anecdotal tidbits, this short book aims for the heart of the principal controversies over the foundations of mathematics. The reader is given the basic logic and mathematics needed to understand the main points of logicism, Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory, intuitionism, finitism and Godel's incompleteness theorems. The chapters are well-written and lucid. You will doubtless pick up something of value if you merely read the book. You will gain more if you study it and do some of the exercises (which do not come with an answer section).

Philosophy of Social Science (Dimensions of Philosophy Series)
Published in Paperback by Westview Press (October, 1995)
Authors: Alexander Rosenberg, Keith Lehrer, and Norman Daniels
Amazon base price: $35.00
Used price: $19.75

Best introduction to the real philosophy of social science
There are many books out there with the same title as this one. But if you want to know what the real issues in the philosophy of social science are, and how they connect to the basic questions of philosophy--from Plato to Popper--this is the book to read. Rosenberg uniquely combines expertise across the range of problems about social scientific method with an eye to the sides social scientists actually have to take about fundamental questions. The comparison of rational choice, functionalist, and Darwinian explanations of cross-cousin marriage rules is just one example!

A must for the philosophical vegetarian
Every vegetarian society should have one of these in theirlibrary. If you thought vegetarianism started with PeterSinger or even Henry Salt, think again. The ancient Greeks have already said it all: the health argument, the ethics argument, the religious argument, they're all there. If you're a vegetarian and you really want to know why, this is where you start, not Animal Liberation or Animal Rights. Instead, take Dombrowski's advice and look up Porphyry's On Abstinence, which you can also order from Amazon Books!

Witness ToThe Struggle: Eye For The Prize!
Ever since the assasination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968, the rich legacy of the city and its key role as a bridge and innovator in the Civil Rights struggle has been obscured at best and ignored at worst. From its heroic role in the yellow fever epidemic, its pioneering contributions to the anti-lynching campaign, its legacy in health care and educational leadership, its singular place in the birth of rhythm and blues to its leadership in the evolution of Gospel Music and Black Christian Theology, Memphis has been largely ignored and unappreciated. Although its history as the King of Cotton rivals the sugar kingdom of New Orleans and its place as the transportation corridor on the Mississippi Bluff excels Atlanta and its presence as the center of hope and culture for Arkansas and Mississippi gave life to St Louis, Kansas City and Chicago and refuge to persecuted refugees from Mississippi and Arkansas. The diversity of its Artistry gave life to every range of Artist from blues to country, classical, opera, pop, jazz, be bop, spirituals and swing. Thanks to the pictures of Earnest Withers and the richness of his living, the truth of Memphis and its heroic contributions can never be loss. He has recorded its cross fertilization as a center of rebirth and growth. Because of his eye for the prize the Confederate city with an Egyptian name has embraced the possibilities of its African roots and made the assassins place of Martin Luther King Jr. a place where the immortality of Elvis grew out of the sounds of WC Handy and the richness of Beale Street. His own contribution as a soldier policeman and father, both in tragedy and triumph, give credibilty and honesty to his insights and his vision. As a member of my wife's maternal family and the actor James Earl Jones, and as a photographic ally of my brother, Benjamin Sims, I can testify to the validity of his experience. Like Parks, his pictures belong among the great treasures in the annals of our time. Anyone sincere about the history of Human rights should include his book as a permanent part of their library.

Pierre Attaingnant, Royal Printer of Music: A Historical Study and Bibliographical Catalogue
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (January, 1970)
Author: Daniel Heartz
Amazon base price: $80.00
Used price: $327.16
Average review score:

A useful source for scholars and performers.
When Heartz' book is grouped with Howard Mayer Brown's bibliography of renaissance instrumental music, Maurice Esses' book on Spanish variations and their musical sources, and Victor Coelho's bibliography of music for lute in Italian manuscripts, there is little else in the way of secondary sources that those seriously interested in renaissance instrumental music could desire. Heartz' book provides both scholars and performers with extremely useful information on the wide range of music published by one of the most important of renaissance music publishers by providing a detailed bibliography, and by putting the music and its publisher in a clear historical context. Whether you need to check an endnote detail, find new repertoire for performance, or search for an aid to more specific research topics, Heartz' bibliography is a perennial help.
