Edmund Burke : Appraisals and Applications (Library of Conservative Thought)

The Irish Alchemist
Because of his ability to capture the complexity of human life in drama without filtering it through his ego, Shakespeare has often been called a mirror in which critics cast their own prejudices and preoccupations. Something similar could be said of Edmund Burke, whose timely thoughts on politics and government often illuminated timeless truths through which commentators could reflect on their own concerns.

Burke is best known for his opposition to the French Revolution of 1789, which he described in Reflections on the Revolution in France, and for his opposition to aspects of British imperialism in America and India. Even those who disagreed with his politics considered him a man of profound imagination; in fact, his early interests leaned to the literary, as in his treatise, A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful. His works suggested a literary sensibility that surpassed his contemporaries'. Largely due to the work of Russell Kirk, Robert Nisbet, and Irving Babbitt, Burke has been considered a major influence on modern conservatism.

Burke's writing, though aphoristic, quotable, and of high literary merit, can be difficult. Daniel Ritchie's intent with this anthology was to introduce the general reader to Burke's major themes by a variety of commentators. Consequently, the book has been divided into five sections: the literary imagination (Coleridge, Arnold); revolution (George Watson, Russell Kirk), constitutional and party government (Harvey Mansfield, Alexander Bickel); the radical mind (Raymond Williams, Conor Cruise O'Brien), and the conservative mind (Irving Babbitt, Robert Nisbet). In each case the critic tends to project his own interests onto the texts, which I consider less a shortcoming of the critic than an indication of Burke's transparent genius. Babbitt, for example, saw in Burke the quintessence of the humane man of letters who could balance opposites in an unsystematic world view.

Some of the essays here will probably try the patience of the general reader. I would have put Steven Blakemore's essay in the "radical mind" section of the anthology, given that I consider his deconstructive approach to be much more in line with radical literary fashion than with traditional explication de texte. But I general I found this to be a useful volume. As I have in the past, I would direct the reader toward the essays by Kirk, Nisbet, and Babbitt for their encapsulation of Burke's themes into plain, yet graceful, English.

Effective Fraud Control Tactics for Insurers and Managed Care Plans

Effective Insurance Fraud Control Saves Everyone Money!
In "Effective Fraud Control Tactics for Insurers and Managed Care Plans", the authors endeavor to educate the reader on how it is in their best interest to understand and support anti-fraud efforts. Insurance fraud is a pernicious phenomenom that increases the premium payments for all of us. The authors suggest that insurers can, by setting up a Special Investigative Unit (SIU), effectively combat insurance fraud and ultimately save the consumer money on premium payments. Perhaps the audience that needs to hear this message the most are the numerous managed care plans that are being started around the country. This book will help managed care administrators, but it will also provide a basic understanding for the layperson to see how managed care plans operate and how they can be defrauded. A common mistaken belief exists that there is no fraud in managed care---this book dispels that myth. The book mentions the challenges of technology in electronically submitted claims and what insurers can do to protect themselves. As I read the book, I tried to imagine what the target audience for it would look like. I am convinced that the authors wanted to reach all insurance companies (indemnity and managed care programs) to convey the message that effectively fighting fraud pays for itself and is no longer an option in the insurance industry of today. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about fighting health insurance fraud.

The Emotionally Intelligent Workplace: How to Select for Measure and Improve Emotional Intelligence in Individuals Groups and Organizations (The Joss

Valid Scientific Writing - misses detailed "How To" answers
After being disappointed by Cary Cherniss' book on "promoting" emotional intelligence, I was rather reluctant to spend money on this one, so I ordered a used copy through Amazon (very satisfactory: the copy I got was as good as new). I must say that I find my money well spent. In fact, the only reason why this book doesn't get 5 stars is that it's too scientific for practical application.

For instance, chapter 5 is correct to point out that most tests don't measure emotional intelligence, BUT emotional competence, and then goes on to warn us that a test as Bar-on's EQi test certainly has disadvantages, given it is a self-administered test (In my experience, self-administration of EQ-like tests is particularly dangerous for recruiting and other forms of evaluation). Of course, then the question becomes: BUT I want to test EQ in the context of work, how can I do this in a reliable fashion? You'll find the answer halfway chapter 6, which indicates that Behavior Event Interviews will do the trick (I agree with this, since that's what I experienced as well). Unfortunately, you won't find what kind of questions to ask during such an interview, let alone examples of how to do it.

Also, I was glad that the author of chapter 8 pointed out the same pitfalls of hiring senior executives I have been warning companies for. The suggestions that were outline come close to what we have been doing for several customers, but again the real, practical how to's are missing.

The chapters on training emotional intelligence in part three of the book were more useful than the book "Promoting E.I.", so there is no need at all to buy that other book anymore. Once again, these 4 chapters contain many of the messages one should have when working to develop EQ.

My critique: Except the scientific parts, I found that many of the more practical things this book covers, are "old messages" that can be found in works of Boyatzis, McClelland, Prochaska, Spencer and Spencer, ...

Conclusion? Buy this book if you need a solid scientific basis for your knowledge of emotional intelligence. As far as the how-to's are concerned, this book will serve very well as an outline and a checklist by which one can evaluate the quality of work delivered by a consultant - however, it's not enough to really go out there and "just do it". On the other hand, if you are a consultant recruiting or training for emotional intelligence, this is a MUST READ. Don't get caught not knowing what's in here!...

Insightful!
If you ever wanted to belly up to the bar with a foreign correspondent, share a cold beer and swap war stories, this is your chance. Daniel Litvin, a former journalist, as well as a former corporate social responsibility (CSR) officer, shares a book full of corporate adventures from the foreign battlefields of business. In this very anecdotal examination of how the arrival of first world companies affects local societies and governments - for good or ill - in third world countries, he sews stories and history together from India to Guatemala to Iran to Manchuria to Africa. He lists the past misdeed of Aramco oil companies in Arabia, of Shell in Nigeria and of Nike's far flung contractors, seeming to say that they meant no real harm and did less harm than they were accused of doing, but he also contrasts the flawed past with the improved present. Even with responsible policies, he says, multinationals most often fail because they create unexpected dynamics and impossible expectations. We from getAbstract recommend this fiscal, social and corporate travelogue to executives, corporate social responsibility officers and field personnel far from home.

Nails down the client problems I see everday at my EAP, and gives good pragmatic advice on brief interventions. Best of all, the statements seem to be what managed care is looking for -- I haven't had a fight with a case manager since I started using this book.

Lot of information
This book has a whole lot of information on T1/2/3 multiplexing hierarchy, frame formats (ESF / SF for T1 and the M3 formats). Finding all this information in one book is very difficult, speaking from my experience. A useful book for anyone wanting to read up on PDH multiplexing hierarchy, but some amount of background knowledge will come in handy.

an excellent companion volume for students
Findlay and Farber treat environmental issues in this work that is a part of the "Nutshell" legal series. Law students snap these works up around exam time to make sure they haven't missed any valuable tidbits, and this book has that sort of "Cliff's Notes" feel to it -- that is, it is not an exhaustive environmental law treatise, but makes an excellent supplement to such treatises.
