An indispensable guide for progressive gardeners
There are quite a few books out now about why we shouldn't stick with the traditional grass lawn, but this is the best one I've seen to explain the practical alternatives, with inspiring photos and helpful appendices. Ms. Daniels is really concerned with the aesthetics as well as the politics of environmentally friendly yards. I recommend it to all my friends who are thinking about getting rid of some or all of the grass. A "9" just because I wish it had more pictures

Well worth purchasing
This book is well organised, well written and beautifully illustrated. Written by people who truly know the Galapagos Islands and all that exists there, including landings and information on what one can expect to see on arrival at any one island. I actually used three other guides whilst in the Galapago this month and only accessed this one at the end of my trip. I have continued to read this book since arriving home and highly recommend it.

William Turnbull, Jr.: Buildings in the Landscape

Doing Good Architecture
This is a big, beautiful book portraying the works of an architect who strived not to design monuments with a signature style, but instead create wonderful places that fit their landscape. The book chronicles twenty of Turnbull's projects beginning with the Sea Ranch Condominium (with MLTW) and ending with Turnbull and his wife's own weekend retreat, Teviot Springs Vineyard. All but one of the projects (Sea Ranch Athletic Club)are residential, which reflects the nature of Turnbull's career. The book contains essays by Mary Griffen (Turnbull's wife and business partner), William Stout, Mitchell Schwarzer, and Donlyn Lyndon. Turnbull's buildings contain innate beauty, sensitivity to site, and the ability to bring common, conventional construction to a high art. Morley Baer's black and white photography is powerful and captures the wonderful subtleties in Turnbull's sometines simple and conventional structures that are truly "GOOD" architecture.

Vital to understanding ADD brain function and treatment
Increased my understanding of the problem 100 fold. Renewed my committment to avoid the conflict seeking behavior my child exhibits. Highly recommend that this information be shared with all caregivers and teachers your child is in contact with as well as family members who do not understand and are even somewhat frightened by ADHD children's behavior.

Wingman
Published in Hardcover by Dodd Mead (April, 1975)
Author: Daniel Manus Pinkwater

Used price: $6.86
Collectible price: $35.00

Wingman is slinkster fun, but also has a poignant message.
When I was 11 years old, my Aunt Mary bought me Wingman, by Daniel Manus Pinkwater. I am greatful. Disguised in Mr. Pinkwater's funky, quirky, belivably flawed, beautiful human characters is a story about family, heritage, prejudice, and the power of the imagination.

The story centers around a young Chinese boy who loves comics. His father is supporting the family after his mother becomes ill. He is picked upon in school. Soon, he is playing hooky to read his comics in the "saftey" of a bridge span. It is there we meet Wingman. He swoops the boy off to ancient China. He is tall, powerful, handsome, invincible. . . and Chinese.

The book shows powerfully, without being preachy, values such as cultural pride, and the feelings of being "different." It is an incredible read, whether you are 11 or 70.

Excellent primer to Western philosophy
I was introduced to this book in a philosophy class, but it was used as a supplementary item with other books. There were a couple of chapters I was required to read, but once I did so, I couldn't stop. I actually read the whole book in one sitting and was fascinated with the concise yet thorough literature it contained on Western philosophy's greatest topics. I was a little disappointed in a few of the chapters, like Death, which didn't seem to really hit the topic very hard. The Cosmos chapter, however, blew me away.

If you're interested in philosophy, get this book. If you've never been exposed to philosophy, GET THIS BOOK! It's great for anyone starting out or wanting to add some thoughts to their existing ones. Trust me, it won't leave you lost in a bunch of philisophical ramblings!
