A whole ecosystem in one book
When I launched into my MS field work in northeastern Minnesota, I was completely unfamiliar with the Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence transitional forest ecosystem, and therefore not a little unprepared! Fortunate indeed that I stumbled onto this little treasure.

Like all Sierra Club Naturalist's Guides, "The North Woods" starts with geology and soils, then ventures into plants, animals, and ecosystem structure. Simple photographs and line drawings are provided for some of the most common and especially important plant and animal species. If you're looking for a conventional field guide, however, this ain't it. Instead, "The North Woods" is a guide to communities and ecosystems. An excellent investment, and next to Heinselmann's "Boundary Waters" one of my favorites. -William Adair, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Utah State University

A Literary Masterpiece
This is one of the most thought provoking books I have ever read. Bonevac's prose are masterful...you literally hang on every word. He somehow translates intellectually difficult topics into practical, easy to understand examples. This book is a bargain at any price. I am a changed man for reading it...Thank you Dr. Bonevac! I have already ordered some of your other works and eagerly look forward to reading them with the same intellectual vigor. Viva Bonevac!

Well written and easy to follow, my personal favorite.
I have been programming in COBOL for less than a year and have worked through several other COBOL books. This one has better explanations and tips than the others. It has been especially helpful in making sense out of some of the 'old code' that I have to maintain. The type of code they write about is waht I see in production every day. It is well worth the cover price. The one drawback is that there is no disk with sample code or a free complier.

A "must read" for all who want to face death with courage
The Singing Bird Will Come is a remarkable book by a man who is truly in touch with himself as he struggles with the reality of death. His strong desire to continue to celebrate life as he prepares to die makes a lasting impression on the reader. How the author comes to grips with communicating his journey is the focus of the book. He seems to follow Kubler-Ross's stages of death--denial, anger, bargaining with God, depression and finally, acceptance. He feels it is especially ironic that he has to come to accept his dying so soon after he had come to accept himself as a gay man. This story captures the well-balanced tension John Noonan experiences between continuing daily living and thinking of eternity. I recommend it highly for caregivers, service providers, and all of us who will prepare to die someday.

Situation Awareness Analysis and Measurement: Analysis and Measurement
Published in Hardcover by Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc (January, 2001)
Authors: Mica R. Endsley and Daniel J. Garland
Amazon base price: $99.95

Excellent book with wider appeal than just intended audience
This book is a collection of papers that address exactly what the title implies - how to analyze and measure situation awareness qualities of systems. The most obvious uses for this specialized human factors discipline is in safety-critical combat systems, with a good deal of the body of knowledge coming from military and commercial aviation. My perspective is different - I purchased this book to glean knowledge and techniques for application in the design of large scale IT systems management. I was not disappointed.

This three part, 16 chapter book starts with a brief introduction to situation awareness theory and concepts, and gives a synopsis of the current body of knowledge and state of the art.

Part II covers measurement approaches with nine chapters (each are individual papers written by experts in their respective fields), that cover topics ranging from the use of SA in critical incident reports to testing and metrics. I found two thirds of these papers helpful to my narrow purposes, which are outside of the SA field. That alone speaks highly of the book and the wide applicability of the material it addresses. Part III addressed special topics, and of the five papers I found four directly applicable to my learning objectives.

As I was reading this book it because apparent that SA is a topic that touches disciplines outside of the domain in which it's traditionally used. For example, a software game designer (which I am not) could learn much about developing user interfaces that maximize the user experience. On the business side, developers who design decision support systems would find many of the ideas and concepts extremely useful, as would any analyst or developer who is designing advanced user interfaces (hardware or software) for interactive systems. In my opinion this book is a hidden gem that changed my thinking and approach about situation awareness on a number of levels. I also recommend "The Power of Events: An Introduction to Complex Event Processing in Distributed Enterprise Systems" by David Luckham as a companion to this book for readers who are in software and hardware engineering disciplines

Insightful, thoughtful analysis of the Calvary miracles
Although this book has few pages, the insightful analysis of the miracles occurring during Christ's crucifixion are thought-provoking and drive you back to the Bible to check out the miracles with new eyes. If you thought you knew the story of the crucifixion, the tearing of the veil, the earthquake, the cry of Christ at His death, etc. the reading of this book will reveal many things that have escaped your attention. As many times as I have read the story in the Gospels, this book has shown things I have never seen in the different accounts of His death. We have used this book for weeks of study in our local Bible Study. If the Six Miracles of Calvary gives you a new revelation of only one miracle, the 3 hours of darkness, it is well worth the price. Absolutely fascinating, so glad we were introduced to this small powerhouse. I highly recommend it.

Cross Country Skiing in Southern California?
SKI TOURS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA filled a major missing link for me - I found it a definitive and very readable book. Now I know a lot more places to go cross country skiing in Southern California. There are 68 trips in the book, complete with trail maps. The trails are in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego Counties and within a one to three hour drive for most Southern Californians. I have now skied nine of the trips. Mr. Anderson's book makes it easy. I found the trail instructions, as well as the directions to the trailheads, clear and easy to follow. It is amazing, in this bastion of fun in the sun, that there are so many places with snow to play on and that it lasts so late into the spring.

This book has a little something for everyone. The trips range from beginner to advance. But it is not just a compilation of ski trails. It includes photos, some cross country ski history, useful information for beginners, safety tips, skiing basics, ski gear information and even tips on skiing etiquette (like what you do with a sitz mark). It also has interesting information about the area where you are skiing. Do you know the world's largest lodgepole pine is in Southern California? I have now skied to it.

And for those who cannot tolerate either cold or snow, there is even a trip to Kelso Dunes in the Mojave Desert! You ski on sand - a definite change of pace from your usual skiing venue. Ski Tours in Southern California should expand most skier's horizons.

An excellent analysis of the Russian character and mind.
One of the best books I have read during the past years. As the only Western psychiatrist in Russia, I was very impressed by the most accurate analysis of the author about the Russian mind and soul. This book is a must for everyone with a genuine interest in understanding past and present Russia and Russians.

Unparalleled!
I honestly don't know what to say about this book. It is truly an amazing read for lovers of poetry and prose alike, as some of these verses utilize a rather story-like writing technique. I would recommend, and have recommended, this book to everyone i know. Definitely worth the time it takes to read.

Excellent Reference
I think this is something that every planning and zoning officer of a small community needs. This book is an excellent reference. It gives step by step directions for conducting surveys, writing a mini plan, special ordinance for special issues (such as signs) and more. There are charts and graphs and pictures that help clarify the text.

I am sure that by the size of it and the way it reads this is a text book for a college class somewhere. IT does read a little bit dry, but I'm not sure how much more exciting you can get with law, legalities, procedures and such.

Good information.
