Slim pickings again
I went ahead and invested in this follow-up to last year's "Murder in Baker Street", hoping that the stories would be better. Well, they weren't. The tales are just flat and unexciting. What happened to the good stories some of these authors used to contribute to previous anthologies? Out of this batch, maybe two are worth reading. Other than that, I would recommend saving $$ and renting it from the library.

Only a Collection of Examples
This is not a book that will teach you very much about programming or about the Macintosh. It talks about some low-level Mac architecture (without much detail or authority), the history of the Macintosh, but mostly it presents bunch of almost unrelated programming examples in C, Pascal, and assembly. These examples range from sorting to celestial mechanics. But they are only code examples, with no authoritative discussion at all. Some of the examples are interesting for their numerical analysis value, but teach nothing about Macintosh programming or basic mathematical concepts. Many of the best examples were not even written by the author. I can't highly recommend this book.

Unique plot and unique device
Excerpt from a review at GayScribe.com: The unique subject matter -- a gay man having a baby with a lesbian couple -- is only one of things that makes the book unique. Curzon wrote the book as a series of letters, emails and faxes between the main characters rather than in the more traditional narrative style. While this style seems in some places to be a device that is rather cumbersome to maintain -- like when characters must write journal entries to help us understand emotions they are not revealing to others -- in other places, it seems to work fairly well. Unique in every way.

Poor color reproduction inside book
I was disappointed by the book and returned it. It has a nice variety of images, but they all look crummy. I bought the book based on the cover image (which, while a familiar scene, appeared to have good color saturation). And indeed the dust jacket is pretty, but the images inside are all washed out.

I can't comment on the text.

The Video is Better
Agree with the editorial review and have the video version as well which I enjoyed very much. I was fortunate to be in attendance at the La Boheme and Otello tapings so it was a wonderful remembrance of the occassions and of this wonderful artist. The book is meant to be a companion to the video, I believe, and worth reading for opera and Domingo fans without the video. However, Snowman's original bio was more informative as to the artist. I still recommend it for Domingo fans as it is enjoyable and gives some interesting background of the performances.

Quantum Optics
Published in Paperback by Springer Verlag (January, 1994)
Author: Daniel Walls
Amazon base price: $54.95
Used price: $25.00
Average review score:

Comprehensive, but more mathematics than physics
This book covers a broad range of topics in quantum optics, including very recent developments. This is probably due to the fact that the authors have themselves made many important contributions to the field.

However, we think the book is not suitable as an introduction to the subject, since the reader is expected to be familiar with both the basic mathematical and notational concepts of the field (which are often introduced without any explanation or motivation).

Probably, Mandel and Wolf's "Optical coherence and quantum optics", or H.-A. Bachor's recently published "A guide to experiments in quantum optics" are more appropriate for a first encounter with quantum optics. - H.K. Nienhuys, S.Woutersen, F. van den Broek, H.J. Bakker.

Good basics but over 10 years old - not current
Book had some great basics concerning retailing and retail management. Current marketplace dynamic virtual environment. Book has no sections dedicated to the internet or cyber retail marketplace. Should be updated with reprint very much needed.

RISC systems and applications

Get this only if you REALLY want to know about RISC
Most people won't be very interested in a book that goes into RISC in such detail. It is all well explained but much of the text talks about systems that have been obsolete for some time.

The roofing book for those who have never been on a roof
This is an informative book that would be acceptable material for the person who has never been on a roof. He covers most roofing products in a adaquate manner explaining many of the basic princibles. However, as a roofer, it would have been nice to see what he considers acceptable manhours per square on each product, using his experiance, instead of using information drawn from other books.

Lacking clear thinking....
Any book that's a "reaction" to another book (in this case Daniel Callahan's "False Hopes : Why America's Quest for Perfect Health Is a Recipe for Failure"), should be read very carefully. In this case, it shouldn't be read at all. This book is not "full of crap" as some people might say, but it obviously lacks clear thinking. However it's worth a read just to see how illogical it is......Not worth your money.
