Where No Man Shall Be A slave--A Very Pleasant Surprise
Catherine Morgan Hill is a real and exciting version of Scarlet O'Hara. The book starts out with intrigue and does not let up. The writer has a lucid and compelling style that brings the reader up without talking down to him. He has a keen and balanced insight into the Confederate mind and motivation. On the surface, it is a whirlwind dash across the face of the Civil War from a southern woman's perspective but underneath is an in-depth, clever, and provocative analysis of the Civil War that is still being fought and the nuances and often-missed influences of the master-servant relationship on life in America both then and now. I bought this book expecting to get another Civil War story (I am a junkie) with some modern feminism creatively wedged in to try to make rooom for the ladies. What I found was one of the most pleasant, entertaining, and challenging reads of any book in memory. I was charmed off my feet by Catherine Morgan Hill who is now my favorite American Heroine. As a woman's classic it rates with Jane Eyre and Portrait of a Lady. Every thinking person should read this book. It is simply marvelous.

A startling and sweeping narrative
Set in the era of the American Civil War, Where No Man Shall Be A Slave is a novel by Daniel E. Cripe and told through the eyes of Catherine Morgan Hill, a strong-willed, aristocratic Southern woman, and the perspective of the slaves themselves -- all of whom become involved in a whirlwind saga of romance, betrayal, and courage. Where No Man Shall Be A Slave is recommended as a startling and sweeping narrative with a climactically dramatic twist.

Wine Tasting Journal

Compact and fun
Great little book. A great way to collect labels and wine tastings. The spiral binding makes page turning a breaze, with enough room to wright cool creative thoughts.

The best designed wine journal I've ever seen!!!
I received this book for Christmas and loved it so much that I thought I would share my thoughts on this journal with other wine tasters of the world. This journal is a terrific way to keep track of wine purchases and for making detailed tasting notes so you can remember which ones are your favourites. The interior layout is simple yet elegant and provides enough space to record such details as what food was served with the wine and what guests were present at the tasting. A full formatted page is allocated to each wine and there is space opposite for attaching the wine label as well. The paper used in the journal is very heavy and a pleasure to write on. There is also detailed text on wine serving that covers various styles and situations. The text on conducting a tasting and making tasting notes is also very informative and takes the amateur through all the steps from assessing colour and clarity, detecting the aroma and bouquet, and all the elements of the palate- mouthfeel, taste, finish and balance. Overall a great journal that I would recommend to everyone, especially as a gift. Cheers.

The Witkiewicz Reader
Published in Paperback by Northwestern University Press (October, 1992)

Amazon base price: $31.00
Used price: $28.11

Insatiability inducing
This is a treasure house, containing one of Witkacy's best short plays (The New Deliverance), one of his best long ones (Janulka, Daughter of Fizdejko), plus extracts from the novels, from critical and theoretical documents (notably on Pure Form, Bruno Schulz and the various drugs with which the author experimented); letters to his friend Malinowski; and the hilarious Rules of the S I Witkiewicz Portrait-Painting Firm, which constitute an object lesson for any artist wracked by the horrors of commercial compromise. The book is conveniently divided into segments according to the progress of Witkacy's career, and each segment has a good biographical chapter by the excellent Daniel Gerould, who seems to have done more to get Witkiewicz known and appreciated in the English-speaking world than most writers can manage to do for themselves. The Witkiewicz reader is both an ideal introduction and a great addition to this reviewer's still-too-small library of Witkacy-in-English. More, please...

The definitive collection for this brilliant writer.
The Witkiewicz Reader is an indispensable collection of plays, personal letters, critical writings, fragments, and biographical information from the life of Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz. It contains his darkly surreal plays; his touching letters to his friend Bronislaw Malinowski, the anthropologist; and his innovative critical writing regarding his Pure Form theory of art. This is a well-deserved tribute to a criminally under-appreciated genius whose tragic suicide as the Nazis invaded Poland took from the world a truly gifted playwright, painter, and philosopher.

Midwest Book Review - captivating, surprising
The Woman with Qualities goes far beyond being simply romantic fiction. It speaks to the very human insecurities that trap us in defeated lives. Digesting the message of Ms. Daniels' captivating first book was a real eye opener! From the beginning of her novel to the unanticipated ending, I was hooked.

Three months a widow, Keri Anders sells her home in Upstate New York and moves to Florida at the urging of a friend. From day one, Florida is anything but the land of sunshine. Keri is plagued with one setback after another, until an accident lands her in the office of Dr. David Chipperton.
Curly hair and twinkling hazel eyes aside, his persona seems familiar. Keri is a poet, a writer, as was Chip's departed mother. She's delighted when the handsome doctor hires her to edit his mother's writings and mentor his own.

Keri and Chip have more in common than her injury and his dreams of writing. Their spirits are connected through time, familiar and beloved. The fact that Chip is married to a wealthy socialite has very little to do with their relationship. Keri is well-read, intelligent and gifted. Chip sees unconditional love and commitment in this woman with qualities.

How the author spins this tale of love between an insecure woman and her solace-seeking lover is what impressed me. Ms. Daniels writes well and kept me reading with delicious anticipation. Along the way, Keri's spirit gains the strength it always lacked and she becomes a woman capable of anything she can imagine doing or being.

As I said in the beginning, The Woman with Qualities transcends romance. You'll have to read it for yourself to understand the secrets I chose not to reveal. I recommend it to mature readers.

Worlds Most Famous Ghosts
I bought this book this book when it came out in 86 with my allowance. I still have it to this day. This is also the reason why I study the Paranormal. This book not only tells you chilling factual ghost stories, but this author tells the story behind them in great detail. I immensly enjoyed the stories about the Tower of London. This book is best when read alone with only a candle burning!! His books I believe can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I am no ashamed to admit I still buy them.

Excellent Example of a Variety of Stories
I read this book as an elementary school student in California back in 1980 or 1981. I have been searching for it ever since with no avail. I was very impressed withe the content of the book as history as well as for it's value having to do with Ghosts themselves. In my adult life, I have recounted many of the stories from this book as historical information as a matter of discussion with other peers as well as with other children; inclusing my own step-children. I hope they have found these stories as entertaining and interesting as I did. They made a distinct mark on me as a child which I have never forgotten, and hopefully neither will they...

WOW! The Kids Loved it!
I bought the Wow Canada book to use with the children I care for in their home. My thought was I would give them a sliver of an idea of life in another country! Little did I know that they would fall in love with Canada! One of my clients children tell their parents exact places in Canada that want to visit! Banff being a favorite! Each child I have shared this book with has gained so much knowledge and understanding of each provience. One can name all of the Proveinces by memory! I highly recommend this book! Looking for the same format for the US!

Wow, Canada is Great
Both my sons age 8 and 12 read this book from cover to cover. We live in Canada and are planning a trip to the western provinces this summer. Well they know all about the prairies now and have already decided where we should go next summer. The book is simple to read (my children's first language is French and they managed with no problems). It is filled with interesting tidbits and gave them a keen interest in our country.

Glorious!
Thoreau's journals are an insight into the man who thrived on simplicity. This book captures the years in which he was making his final revisions on "Waldon." His journal reflects his masterpiece and his book is then reflected back into his journal writings. If you are at all interested in Thoreau's writings, this is a needed companion to understand such a brilliant mind.

The Perfect Introduction to Thoreau's Journals
Many readers exposure to Thoreau's published self-contained books like _Walden_ and _The Maine Woods_ are intrigued enough to look deeper. Inevitably, you end up with the Journals.

The journals are so long and copious, that it can be hard to decide where to start. I don't know off-hand how many pages or words there are, but there are enough of Thoreau's Journals out there to last you 3 to 5 years of reading.

So! You should buy this starter book to introduce you to the flavor of the Journals. If you also read some of the Biographies out there, you learn that Thoreau's life went through some distinct periods, which will be reflected in the different Journals. Many folks think 1851 was a magic and expanding year for him, and that's why this book follows this year alone.

My only complaint about the book using this time frame is that it sort of Pornographically selects from all the years of the Journals--and pornographically selects from 1851. As if all T's days were charmed, all rich with experience.

But the Journal selections excerpted here and this book as a whole have many good qualities that outway my only complaint. They are:

1.--This book follows a year, and T was very much influenced by the seasons. Coming full circle in a year with T is good reading.

2.--The book doesn't try to do too much. If an Introduction book does its job, it should leave you wanting more deep info on the subject. This book did that for me.

3.--There are a couple-few cool replications of drawings T did in his journal. Bonus points for these.

Overall, the subject material here is awesome. If you only know Thoreau through his published "books" and if you like them (especially the naturalist part of them), the Journals will change your world. This book does a solid good job of introducing you to the Journals.

Beautiful poetry about timeless places and people
Despite the title, Brodsky's work does take us back, back to the feel and joy of a youth spent in the North Woods and the places where youth ought to be spent. Great reading for those who just want to revel in the beauty of words descibing beautiful ideas.

This book is critical to any Nebagamon lover's library, alongside such works as Willy Stern's "There's an Old Southern Saying" and Brad Herzog's "States of Mind."

10
Great book, great memories, especially for anyone who's ever spent a summer in the North Woods. If the words "Sawbill," "Muggs Lorber" or "Upper Diamond" mean something to you, you'll find yourself reading these poems again and again.

Young Ghosts

creepy creepy creepy
I've been a fan of the supernatural since I was a kid. Not to say I believe in it all, but I always find myself looking into it.

Daniel Cohen has to be one of the most prolific non-fiction writers out there, and this book does not disappoint. I have read several dozen 'true ghost' books and for some reason this one was one of the creepiest...perhaps since it was about children, but regardless, if you're tired of stale, encylopedia style books that don't really get into the sightings, this is the book for you.

This book gave me Chills and Thrills
I'm not a really big fan of the supernatural. But after reading this book it really made me think. I especially liked the story the Avenging Ghost. It was the best.
