Manual of Canine and Feline Behavior, Bsava

Excellent Information for all Cat Owners
This book is a bit pricey but well worth it. It begins with overviews of normal cat behaviour and development, from birth onwards, and then moves to discussions of the causes of and how to handle behavioral problems (such as fear!). It is written for the veterinary professional but is not too difficult for the layman to understand. The chapters are each written by an international authority on that particular subject (such as Dr. Crowell-Davis of UGA who writes on "Social Organization, Communication, and Development in Cats"). I can't speak from the point of view of a dog enthusiast, but cat owners and breeders will find this volume both interesting and useful.

Marion Bridge

An Amazing Journey
I recently discovered the plays of Daniel MacIvor, a Canadian actor-playwright I'd seen on the series "Twitch City." He has one of the most original theatrical visions I've encountered, tempered with an amazing generosity in the depiction of character. "Marion Bridge" is about three sisters--a nun, a failed actress and the one who stayed in their small-town home--coming together to care for their dying mother. Unlike most men writing about women, he does not define the women in terms of their relationships with men, nor does he put the women at each other's throats for two acts. Instead, they react like real family members. Sometimes they work together; sometimes they fight. And it's always little things that mark the transition from one stage to another.

I've taken scenes from this play to some acting workshops and all involved have been very impressed with the flow of the dialogue and the effective, totally believable use of humor. I'm surprised nobody has done Mr. MacIvor's plays down here. I hope to do a production of this in the fall. Order this book. You won't be dissappointed.

Marx's Attempt to Leave Philosophy
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (August, 1998)
Author: Daniel Brudney
Amazon base price: $50.00
Used price: $49.93
Average review score:

Great book on early Marx
I first checked this book out because of its intriguing title. Brudney primarily analyzes Marx's work from 1844 to 1846, particularly his conception of the good life. To set the stage, Brudney spends the first third of the book showing how the works of Feuerbach and Bauer inform Marx's treatment of human fulfillment and his stance toward philosophy. This is quite helpful since Marx's relation to philosophy turns out to be complex and changeable even in his earliest works. Brudney's explanations and evaluations of Marx's arguments are a model of philosophical analysis: they are exceptionally clear, thorough, rigorous, give a charitable but not uncritical presentation of the thinker analyzed, and connect early works with contemporary philosophical concerns. Would that Marx had written this way! For anyone from upper-division undergraduates to Marxist scholars, this excellent book is a must read.

Materials and Techniques of Medieval Painting

An excellent primer for illuminators and painters
The book covers a history of carriers and grounds, binding methods and vehicles, their viscosity and transparency effects, pros and cons of different binding media, glazes and varnishes. It then gives a classification of medieval pigments and details the main pigments used to produce colours on the page, wall and panel. Mixing, reaction and permanence problems with pigments, confusion of identification, and history are described. Metals are also discussed, including types of gold media and gilding methods. This is an absolutely essential book for anyone (and especially SCAdian illuminators) interested in the building blocks of medieval painting. It will give you a good grounding in the basics and help you understand the resources, techniques and mindset of medieval artists. I cannot recommend it enough. It is also an entertaining read(if occasionally unintentionally).
