beautifully written and covers very important information.
This is a wonderful book -- written with compassion, insight, and grace. Every physician and other health care professional could benefit from reading this -- and their patients, in turn, will benefit as well.

Excellent book for health care professionals and lawyers!
This book was wonderful! A must for medical students, law students and both lawyers/doctors. Puts the reality of the true duty of a "professional" into perspective. Truly a delight. Unquestionably a five star book. Dr. Sulmasy catches the essence of what is missing in the current debate on the role of the health care professional.

A "MUST" for any health care professional who CARES!!!
I found Dan Sulmasy's book "just what the doctor ordered!" He hit the target right on the mark in providing practical spiritual ways to become and sustain ourselves as truly caring physicians and health care providers. Very timely in this age of "managed cost" reimbursement, increasing legal, patient, and life demands on the physician / caregiver. We are currently using Dan's book as a discussion guide for our monthly spiritual support group for physicians who come from every specialty!

The Healing of Texas Jake
I liked Marco and Polo. They reminded me of my brother and me. I think the other cats were cool but I didn't like Jake very well. I think he was selfish and mean. I liked the steaknife game and how you sometimes can't trust what people say.

Excellent Story!
I loved this book! Marco and Polo bring you right into the story. If you love cats and adventure, this book is for you.

A must read for cat lovers
If you have read The Grand Escape, you will love The Healing of Texas Jake. It's exciting and you won't be able to put it down.

Healing the Hardware of the Soul: How Making the Brain-Soul Connection Can Optimize Your Life, Love, and Spiritual Growth

Healing The Hardware Of The Soul
Dr. Amen has done it again! He shares with us how making the brain-soul connection can optimize your life, love, and spiritual growth. Acclaimed neurologist, Daniel Amen's breakthrough program has helped hundreds of thousands overcome depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and ADD. As one of the most innovative researchers of the mind today, Dr. Amen unites the concepts of neurology and values of religion in his holistic therapy for the mind and soul.

A Powerful Discussion of The Brain's Effect on Behavior/Mood
This book is the latest in a series of books in which Dr. Amen shines rays of light on the workings of the human brain, and discusses the relationship between brain functioning and behavior. This book takes the discussion a step further, however, into the connection between brain functioning and the human soul.

Dr. Amen asserts, "When the brain is healthy we are compassionate, thoughtful, loving, relaxed and goal directed, and when the brain is sick or damaged, we are unfeeling, impulsive, angry, tense, and unfocused, and it is very hard for our souls and our relationship with god to be at peace."

The book begins with an easy-to-follow explanation of each major part of the brain and its function, including SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) scans that show both healthy and under-functioning brains.

Dr. Amen compares the brain to a computer's hardware, with the variety of functions we perform day-to-day being the software. If a computer's hardware is not functioning correctly, it cannot successfully run software. Similarly, if one's brain is not healthy, one cannot successfully execute the "programs" of one's life, such as parenting, working, learning, teaching, coping with crises, etc.

The book includes many fascinating examples, drawn from the thousands of patients Dr. Amen has treated at his clinics. In each case, Dr. Amen describes the presenting problem, and shows, using SPECT scans, the unhealthy part of the brain that is causing the problem. In each case, after specifically treating the unhealthy part of the brain, the presenting problem diminished or disappeared.

The last half of the book includes tools for self-assessing brain functioning, and a discussion of the various methods used to optimize brain function. These methods include medication, natural supplements, cognitive strategies and breathing work.

I highly recommend this book for everyone who works with underfunctioning individuals at any level (and for underfunctioning individuals themselves). It presents a perspective that I think is imperative to the understanding of why people feel, behave, and function as they do. I think this information is a critical piece of the puzzle that we seek to solve each time we try to help an underfunctioning individual.

I can speak personally about the effectiveness of Dr. Amen's approach to understanding and treating underfunctioning individuals. We adopted our son at the age of 11, with full knowledge that he had a life-long history of violent behavior. Dr. Amen's SPECT scans and evaluation showed clearly the parts of his brain that were not functioning properly. And they showed that the medication he'd been on while in county group homes for four years was the exact opposite of what he needed. This helped us understand why he behaved as he did, and the new medications stopped the violent rages, which he could not otherwise control. Dr. Amen's intervention, along with a year of attachment therapy and hard work at home, have literally saved this child from life in an institution.

Very Motivational Book for People!
Hello, my name is Derek Smith and I have been doing research on Dr. Daniel G. Amen for the past seven years or so. I felt this book was a very touchign book in which it goes hand in hand with Chenge Your Brain Change Your Life and also Healing ADD. I have been doign the treatment process using Dr. Amen's book and I am know in college in which nobody ever thought was possible for me. After reading this book it made me reflect on myself and what i have done and helped me relize that the sucess I have had can also help other people. This book made me relize that I should go and give back all the knowlege I have gained over the years from sucess and struggles of overcomming my oen problems and to head towards helping other people with the same problems.

The Heart of Parenting: How to Raise an Emotionally Intelligent Child

One of hte best parenting books!
You can find a lot of books about parenting, but many of them are just pop psychology, the solitary opinion of the author.
Gottman is definitely not one of them. He is known as one of the leading psychologists in the area of family and marriage psychology. This book presents the essence of his research findings about raising emotionally intelligent children.
His advise is surprisingly easy and is based on a 5 step model:
1. Be aware of your child's emotion
2. See your child's emotions as an opportunity to be close together
3. Actively listen to your child and validate the feelings
4. Help your child to verbalize his feelings
5. Help your child solve problems, while setting clear limits

Gottman clearly explains how you can implement this 5-step-model in daily life and what to do when problems arise. His real life examples make reading really fun.
All in all, an excellent parenting book! As a supplement, I can also recommend the book by M. Seligman: "The optimistic child"

A fantastic audio book every parent should have!
This audio book has opened my eyes to what children are really thinking and how to deal with them. I have tried the recommended ideas with my own daughter and it has worked wonders. It can be difficult at first, but with patience, these ideas will create a bond between you and your child that you may not have known could exist.

Marvellous!
"Emotional Intelligence" has recently been recognized as an important life skill. A combination of important traits (including self-discipline, ability to handle anger appropriately, self-esteem, empathy, and social skills), emotional intelligence allows one to handle life's frustrations and to "work and play well with others." These skills have been shown as more important than I.Q. as predictors of success in one's personal relationships and career. This wonderful book teaches parents how to raise their children to have emotional intelligence. The book sees children's problems and frustrations as opportunities for "emotion coaching" - helping them learn how to deal with their emotions. The book also identifies four "parenting styles" - two of these styles react negatively to chldren's negative emotions, one style accepts them but doesn't help the child deal with them, and the "Emotion Coaching" style accepts the emotions and teaches the child what to do with them. I wish my parents had had this book - I was a "difficult" child, prone to tantrums, etc., but much of my difficulty came from feeling frustrated and not knowing what to do about it. My parents were loving, but didn't really know how to handle the problem. This book will create greater understanding between parent and child, and will help the child grow up to be an emotionally healthy adult.

Enjoyable to the last page!
I'm gonna have to agree with every other review that I've read about this book so far, it's great! Definitely a book to pick up if you're looking to have a good time reading. I haven't even seen a movie lately that I've enjoyed as much as this book.

Desert authors rule!
I first picked up this book because the authors were from Tucson. I wasn't sure about how good it would be but now I'm really glad that the authors are from Tucson otherwise I might have missed out on one of the best books I've ever read! It's refreshing to read something that doesn't even give an attempt to be serious and yet also contains so many horror elements. I hope these guys keep writing 'cause I want more!

Video games meet the world of novels!
This book is great. A wonderful horror and comedy novel that will appeal to fans of both. It will even appeal to video gamers as it almost seems like a parody of the famous Resident Evil series. Definitely check this book out. I loved it!

Outstanding, research-based information.
This book provides a VP of sales or sales manager with the behind the scenes research that went into Professional Selling Skills and other landmark training by Learning International. If anyone has a questions as to why this training vs. others - this answers the question! By the way, I would highly recommend their training also. The best consultative sales training on the market.

A great summary of updated sales expectations
This is a very clearly written book that puts definition to what you are likely already seeing as your new role as a sales person in the 90's. I found it very applicable for my sales position in aerospace sales. It gives an outline of how to assess your customers and meet their expectations. It further spells out what skills you need as a sales person today and what customers expect from you. It stresses the changing role to business consulant from order taker. Good reading

cool by association
Kevin J. Corcoran is my uncle, so I thought his book was down right cool. Maybe I think that all those related to me have that benefit. But seriously, this book presents some very significant business information with some flair. Check it out! I should be in sales... Brian A. Corcoran (brian@princeton.edu)

Honk if you love Aphrodite
Awesome book Dan! My book club bought 3 and shared them and we all had a blast with it! Every little inuendo hit home and I especially liked the vision in my mind of the Gods on Catskill. The fate of being stuck in perpetuity in chains and submission was a befitting end. Great job, Keep it up I will wait for the next one. Mark

fine reading
Honk if you love aphrodite was a masterpiece. The way the author used homeric style in the body was intense. It takes skill and panache to create good literature, and even more skill and panache to create memorable literature. If you can handle this gripping book, you can fully understand the brilliance of the writer. I love you dan, and katy and delilah

A divine read, if you'll pardon the pun
I recently read this book aloud during a long car trip and had all occupants, including myself, in stitches. Here is an author whose affection and understanding for the foibles of New York City's underside is only matched by his penchant for the eccentric and willingness to take his word usage out on a limb. The meter and feel of the Homeric-style epic ballad rings absolutely true, as can only really be ascertained from reading it aloud, as we did, and Weiss's outlandish characters and acerbic asides only showcase what is, in the end, a rather touching love story that owes nothing to divine intervention. We were particularly fond of the real Myron, left lurching drunkenly around Coney Island bereft of friends and purpose, an incredibly bald look at Manhattan's S&M club scene (if you've ever been to Hellfire, you'll understand) and the subway Amazons Tess and Shameeka. Weiss's comments concerning the late JFK are not to be missed, either; in true Homeric style, he doesn't waste any time making a political point poetically. This is a smart, funny read that will make you think and probably help you with your next crossword puzzle. Take it for what it is. (Just to set the record straight -- "Roaches" is still my favorite of the Weiss lexicon).

Excellent Book
I was amazed when I read this book. It is packed with gems of wisdom. I recently gave a topic on goals and ended with Peter J. Daniel's poem (in the front of the book.) Everyone wanted to know where I got the poem from. If you can find yourself a copy of this book BUY IT. It may change your life.

An exceptional guide to achieving a lot more in life
I was very skeptical when I heard about life-changing books, but since reading this book, I am amazed at the huge pozitive effect it is having on my life. Peter J. Daniels comes from a poor family but that has not stopped him from becoming a very successful person. This book taught me how to create opportunities rather than waiting for them to happen. It is easy to read and understand and it also gives practical examples of how having the right attitude can do a lot more than just favourable circumstances. I wish I read this book when it was first printed and I am amazed at how accurate are the principles described by Peter J. Daniels. It's obvious that God gave Peter J. Daniels a lot of wisdom and I want to thank Mr. Daniels for sharing it with us in this high above average book.

Single best overview to establishing and controlling life
From his life examples Peter Daniels gives us a stunning pattern of establishing and maintaining clear, meaningful direction for our lives. His understanding of the power of a mission, and his explanation of the same is without a doubt the best work done in this field. He is clear, concise and everyone would benefit from these lessons. A fabulous gift

The Complete Record
When you read this book you will realize why there is so much controversy about Human origins. The fossil record is so sparse, it makes you wonder how scientists have been able to deduce as much as they already have. This book was probably written as a reference for college level courses in paleoanthroplogy, but it is also a good reference for armchair amateurs such as myself. Concise, well written and superbly illustrated, the book is an invaluable resource.

Awesome illustrations and coverage of the specimens
Covers a ton of prominent homind specimens with detailed black and white illustrations (drawings not photos) that accent the morphological features of each specimen. Includes detailed descriptions of the specimens and also a nice description at the beginning of each section. As a bonus also includes a section with non-hominid primate specimens. This book is great for anthropology students needing a quick reference to numerous specimens. It also contains numerous references to the literature about each specimen so makes a great starting point for research.

Human Origins
This book is an excellent source for students and teachers of human evolution. It is the first compilation that I have seen that puts drawings of all the major fossil finds together in one place. It is very helpful as a supplementary text in an intro human origins class since most books lack adequate pictures of the major fossil players.

The Art of the Stone Wall
Want to learn how to make a stone wall a piece of art instead of construction? Dan Snow will guide you in this book. A book very strong in artistic expression, not construction technique. One excellent resource is the detail in the back which provides important information on how long each project took, stone sources, and construction methods. Photographer understands the art of stone because he uses his art well to express the art of the stone. You may not learn a whole lot, but you will be inspired, and thats the strength of his work! Its not construction, its truely ART!

A survey of the art involved in building the stone wall
In The Company Of Stone isn't just a landscaper's book, but deserves a spot on the art shelf as a survey of the art involved in building the stone wall. From Snow's own experiences working in stone to the various alternative designs offered by stone wall structures, In The Company Of Stone pairs black and white photos by Peter Mauss with the author/artist's reflections.

Inspiring
Many books explain the "how-to" of stonework; in this book Dan Snow explains the "why". The reader gets a glimpse of the creative possibilities of stone. Excellent photography; inspiring. This book is a "must-have" for anyone interested in stonework.
