It's wonderful
It's a very imaginative book about a girl and her desire to play football (socer). She fights with the cliche about women not good for some sports or other things. This author also has other 5 stars books like "El abuelo mas loco del mundo" and "Los telepiratas"

Nicely done! Very Detailed, good reference!
This is the 2nd Edition of this book, released in
2003, by Drs Bernstein and Shelov which tries to make
a case to become your primary Pediatrics text for both
core clerkships and subIs. Also makes a good reference
text for the USMLE exams, or shelf tests.
The book is a hefty one, with over 600 pages, divided
into 25 chapters. The chapters are logically broken
down into 2 large subgroups: General Pediatric
Practice, and Pediatric Subspecialties.

The General Practice section begins from birth,
essentially the approach to the newborn infant,
progresses thru health maintenance visits, adolescent
medicine, then off to other general peds issues. Also,
this book includes chapters on socioeconomics/culture,
as well as ethical issues, and managed care issues.
This is a welcome addition to any general medical
text, in this era of more culturally sensitive
medicine. I don't know how applicable these last few
sections are to the USMLE or to the core clerkships,
but they make for some interesting side reading. The
managed care explanations of health care plans is
particularly relevant in the managed care world of
today?s practice.

The subspecialty chapters are very well organized, and
have a high level of detail. There is an abundance of
information in various tables, diagrams and photos.
For example in Cardiology they begin with Congenital
Heart Disease and then explain pathophysiology,
clinical history, physical exam findings, EKGs,
murmurs, cardiac dysrythmias, etc. The other chapters
include infectious diseases, neonatology, development,
genetics, endocrine, GI, hematololgy, oncology,
allergy/immunology,. Pulmonary, neurology, nephrology,
rheumatology, dermatology, trauma, Peds ICU, pediatric
surgery.

Overall, the level of detail in the text is very good.
That is the greatest strength of the book, but at the
same time, makes it a dense textbook to read. It is
much easier to read than the NMS Pediatrics text, but
probably a bit thick compared to Blueprints.
Sometimes the level of detail is beyond even a 4th
year medical student?s need to know. Things like
specific drug dosages probably could have been left
out. These can always be looked up in a Pharmacopia or
Harriet Lane. Most of the diagrams are well done, but
it would have been nice to have more diagrams to break
up the text. In addition some of the black and white
photos appeared very grainy and difficult to interpret
probably due to the resolution of the computer scanned
images. There are some great pictures of pediatric ICU
procedures, but it is unlikely that a medical student
would get to attempt things such as a central line
placement!

The book leaves no stone unturned in the specialty
areas, and really does an excellent job of breaking
down major pediatric problems. I would have
appreciated having the chapter contents at a glance,
so it would be easier to find information. The current
layout is great for reading through, but if you wanted
to quickly flip to a particular section of a say
Pulmonary problem, it might take a few minutes.
Especially valuable are the pediatrics pearls
scattered throughout really help to tie in book
smarts with clinical practice. For Example : In some
cases of bacterial pneumonia, particularly of the
Right lower lobe, significant intra-abdominal
pathology such as acute appendicitis is often the
initial presentation. These clinical pearls along
with the numerous tables of differential diagnoses,
and diagnostic evaluations were especially helpful.

They also include a free CD Rom (Windows) that
includes a number of questions in all the topic areas.
You can take quizzes by chapter, or a mixed bag, where
you can specify the number of questions you want to be
asked. The explanations are generally good, for the
answers, but sometimes without reading the answer
carefully you have a hard time figuring out which of
the multiple choice answers is correct. The CD Rom
also includes a scoring system, that gives you a
percentage correct as well as a way to review the
questions you missed. It?s a nice freebie, to get you
prepped for your clerkship exams. The questions are
well done, and at an appropriate level.

Overall, Pediatrics for Medical Students, 2nd edition
makes a great addition to any medical student's shelf.
It's not intended to be a pocket reference, or a
Nelson?s Pediatrics, and is probably just a bit more
detailed than most students need. However, it is well
written, and fits the student well. It is a much
easier read than NMS Pediatrics, and is more detail
oriented than Blueprints for Pediatrics. If you need
something quick and easy to read, Blueprints is more
than adequate for most, but if you need a more
comprehensive text and are more deeply interested in
Pediatrics, Pediatrics for Medical Students is
definitely worth your time. Visit [...]!

The Many Faces of the Middle East
Two New York professors have written a clear, non-bombastic account of the varied peoples, and their cultures, who have populated the Middle East for thousands of years. Because there are far more Arab and Turkic peoples in the region, the book focuses far more on them than on the Jewish communities or on Israel. But the latter country is not overlooked, and there are a fair number of references and explanations of Jewish issues. The authors take an anthropological, rather than a political science, view of the region, which makes for easier reading, and keeps the reader from having to wonder about the hidden meaning of each statement.

They look at the early history, with migration a big factor, the arrival and growth of Islam, first as a religion and then, quickly, as a political force, farming practices, the growth of cities, familial ans social issues and development of contemporary political states.

This book is well worth the time of people who wonder about the many ethnic groups in the Mideast, especially those who think there are just two sides and two kinds of people there contending for the same ground. They don't spend a lot of time laying arguments out for who should control what part of Jerusalem; they're too busy talking about things in a longer range historical context.

Though written for the academic world, it is an easy read, offering us a thorough perspective into a vital part of the world.

Philosophy and the Evolution of Consciousness: Owen Barfield's Saving the Appearances

A helpful guide
Owen Barfield's Saving the Appearances is a challenging book. If you are willing to follow along, Barfield introduces you to a whole new landscape-- a way of thinking about thinking and language and consciousness that requires a suspension of everyday assumptions that most of us take for granted. Given the demands of this work, I found myself wishing for a guide, and that's how I found Philosophy and the Evolution of Consciousness.

This work will probably be appreciated most by those with training in philosophy. Smitherman situates Barfield's work within the stream of philosophical discourse and takes on some significant philosophical issues to illustrate the power of Barfield's thought. It would thus be a mistake to think of this book as a "Reader's Guide to Saving the Appearances." Although I do not have the philosophy background that would permit me to judge this work on those merits I did find that it opened my eyes to some of the more important themes that Barfield develops. Smitherman makes use of a number of examples from his personal experiences and from other fields and writers that explicate his points. His writing is clear and reasoned. I failed to give it 5 stars only because I did not feel qualified to judge it on its philosophical merits. I have no problem recommending it to others who wish to dive into Barfield's world.

Good book, but a bit tough at times
The physicists is a well researched, scholarly work that sums up the history of american physics. Its a good read for those who are highly interested in the field, or those who can handle books of a more scholarly bent. For the casual reader you might find this book a bit dry. It lacks a cohesive story or character to make it come alive.

Be strategic and pragmatic, and get a great job !
Interesting jobs are not available in classified. Firstly most jobs available are not advertized. Second, you will work much better in a position that suits your abilities. This is precisely the starting point of the PIE method developed in this book.

Especially for long-term unemployed managers (as we have in Europe), one needs to pick targets, and approach them with a methodology to discover job opportunities after listening to the company's needs. Thus you are sure to value your experience rather than your knowledge, which can possibly lead you to change domain and/or job. Based on the match between one's strengths and a firm's hidden positions, the approach of Daniel POROT is destined to entrepreneurs and people who are chasing with method.

On the way, the process helps the person to rebuild confidence (part of the recommendations involve working out the approach of target companies with other job-seekers). The approach proved very useful to scores of job-hunter! s who questioned their own capabilities on the way. It works also fine for self-outplacement.

The method proposed by D. Porot is based on methodologies developed by Research institutions (such as Standford Univ.) along the years with large corporations. So one must consider the book as the surface of the iceberg, and be sure that the hidden part is solid, even if the methods described seem good-sense. This book helps to have a strategic approach, and at the same time it is full of pragmatic advices to develop each phase of contact with the company you intend to work for.

Yes, you guessed right, I used it! And I recommend it to my relatives, it works!

Politica

Fascinating and Important Treatise
This is a highly abridged English translation of the "Polticia Methodice Digesta" of Johannes Althusius, an influential 16th century jurist. It is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the history of federalism, since Althusius' conception of sovereignty is directly contrary to the one set out by Jean Bodin, which subsequently triumphed. Essentially, Althusius teaches a conception of sovereignty that allows the gov't to deal only with lower social units, rather than leaving the individual naked to the full might of the highest authority. In other words, it seeks to preserve what are sometimes called "mediating institutions" that lie between the citizen and the state. This is something that is desperately needed in our days of gov't power run amok.
