Things you need to learn on your own.
After finishing medical school and never getting great teaching on the cardiac auscultatory exam, I purchased this book in hopes of learing a little more.

This book and 3 CD set have great auditory examples with discussion both verbal & written by Dr. Mason. Recommended for anyone who wants to improve their cardiac exam!

A little piece of Wyoming

Excellent history of early Southeastern Wyoming
This is a thorough and comprehensive chronological history of the Overland Trail and Union Pacific Railroad from the Laramie area westward past Rawlins, Wyoming. Kinnaman first gives us a brief introduction of the land area, along with the Indians, trappers and explorers who frequented the region up through the 1840's and 1850's. Citing from more diaries, journals, letters, official government documents, books, etc. he then carefully guides us through the establishments of the Overland Stage Stations and life on the Overland Trail itself with its many hardships during the early 1860's. With Fort Halleck as a pivotal point, we then see how the military influenced the region, still with Indian depredations occuring and the perils of existing in those days. The chapters on the railroad making its way through this area are captivating. Again, many Indian hostilities and other occurences too numerous to mention. It is a fascinating read, I had no idea so many events occured in this region. I must disagree though with what I believe is an historical inaccuracy. On page 19 Kinnaman states that when Ashley left the Rawlins area he went north to the Sweetwater River in 1825. According to Dale Morgan's scholarly work, "The West of William Ashley" which is based on Ashley's own diaries, from Bridger's Pass Ashley went west, then just a little north to the Dry Sandy which is a tributary of the Big Sandy, which drains into the Green River. So, he did not go to the Sweetwater. Ashley did go along the Sweetwater River the following year, 1826.

Living in fear : a history of horror in the mass media

Every Horror Fanatic Should Have This Book
A superb treatise on horror as developed in all of the artistic media of Western civilization from remotest antiquity to the "Creature Features" of 50's and 60's TV and the Satan craze in films of the 70's. Daniels in a sense updates H.P.Lovecraft's excellent essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature", although he addresses film, music, TV, and comic books with equal erudition (HPL, unfortunately, did not live long enough to witness the flowering of these media forms, however). The book was originally published in 1975, and I can't help but wonder if Mr.Daniels has any plans to update this remarkable work (it would be interesting to see his take on the "slasher films" of the 80's and the "death metal" scene in rock, among other subjects). All in all, a very well done survey of the manifestations of a society's anxieties via its diverse media throughout the ages.

Delightful as always
I always enjoy Llewellyn's Magical Almanacs because of the varied and interesting articles, the comprehensive daily calendar, and the size of the book. This one is no exception! The articles cover a wide variety of ground and there is something for every magical background.First, I think I'll start with the bad: Silver RavenWolf has WAY too many articles in here; 21, in fact. I love Silver and everything but that's a bit of overkill. Her articles aren't bad, but some of them could've been compressed into one larger article, and a few of them seem like hype for her then-unreleased books _Angels_ and _Teen Witch_. However, most of her articles are good, with the notable ones being "Teen Witch: How Do I Tell my Parents?" which offers practical and usable advice, and "Dream Magick", a personal favorite of mine, which offers a technique for getting a message through to someone you cannot reach. Other articles of hers, on the other hand, are drab, such as "Magical Quickies for Inner and Outer Beauty" and "How to Make your Own Woman Stone".D.J. Conway makes some wonderful contributions, including some sweet children's stories and an article on "Chaos Dragon Power for Women." Other notable articles include biographies of Dion Fortune, Sybil Leek, and Scott Cunningham; "How to Use Planetary Hours"; "The Island of Pimu"; "Men and Isis Worship"; and "Recycling your Jack o'Lantern". The illustrations are great and fitting, with more hand-drawn ones in this edition. Poetry is also offered in this edition, with contributions by Jen Besemer and Jane Callard.Highly recommended, I suggest picking a copy up if you can. You won't regret it!

An important contribution on sor Juana's criticism
This is the first published study on Sor Juana's Loas, a theatrical form neclected by sor Juana's critics. Courtly theater that shows the best playwriting on Mexican colonial times. A fine study obliged to read to sor Juana followers.

The Only Guide Of Its Kind On Australian Wildlife
As a wildlife photographer I was very keen to find out where were the easiest places in Australia to see wildlife. This was the only book I have been able to find of this kind. The guide lists the best locations to see wildlife by state, often with very specific details. It also provides a brief description of some of Australia's most popular wildlife and what are the hotspots for viewing that particular species. This guide is not designed to give detailed information on wildlife behavior or physical makeup, it is designed to tell you where you can see wildlife and it does that brilliantly!!

Boone without the Myths
Daniel Boone is a man lost in legend, "Mythologised heyond recognition". His true story is certainly more incredible and indeed astonishing than anything fiction could dream up. Even in his own lifetime he was feted for his incredible abilities.

Boone's abilities were apparent from his earliest childhood in mid-eighteenth century pioneer America. He had an uncanny sense of direction and ability to find his way around. He kept moving west through Kentucky to Missouri and even went as far as Yellowstone Lake on one trip. Yet despite opening up vast new territories for new settlers he died without owning an acre of land. In that time he had worked with and fought against the Indians, served with the American's in the War of Independence, narrowly missing being captured, and seen at least two of his children killed before their time.

I loved this biography by Elliot. I felt he really stripped back the layers of myth, carefully weighing up different accounts and the veracity of them while telling his story. The result is a small insight into the private life of a private man as well as his amazing public acts. I often wondered if Diana Gabaldon read this biography when working on her Outlander series, or maybe she had a Daniel Boone-ish sort of character in mind to base her character of Jamie on when he reached America.
