This book Does Not Follow the Current Protocols
This book is of no value for the current (2001) AHA course. It was excellent when current back in 1996, but I ordered it not realizing it is out of date. Do not get this book, except for historical purposes

A great study guide for ACLS
A must have for ACLS. This book makes studying for and taking the ACLS course much easier and more enjoyable. The AHA book has long been the teaching manual and still contains course outlines but this book has references to the AHA manual with page numbers to reference. It is much easier to read and understand. I just hope with the new guidelines coming this year the authors follow suit with an updated version of this book!

True story of a young doctor publicly living with Aids.
Even though I live in the same city as Peter Jepson-Young did, I never encountered the news segments he did. It was my mother that told me that this was the same Peter I knew briefly as a child when he lived in Nanaimo. So, I bought this book based on that. I can't give this book more than 2 stars for this reason: although the author (Daniel Gawthrop) has written well on this subject, the book echoes, probably unintentionally, with the fact that Peter's life need never have ended this way. It is deeply sad; it is very moving and (remembering way back, Peter was a sweet and hansome kid). It's that over-all "pride thing" that eats away at the mind and spirit well before Aids frequently steps in to ravage the body. I (like so many others now), have seen Aids kill up close. My real concern over this book however, lies with the author. Mr. Gawthrop, in writing for a Vancouver weekly gay newspaper, told about his experience at a Christian men's Promise Keepers event. His contempt for those in attendance, he made no attempt to conceal. While other men near him were praying for a young man in the immediate group, Mr. Gawthrop reveals that he prayed that the young man would not exerience the "born again suicide". He shows his readers that not only does not understand Jesus' command for all that seek to follow Him and to come into the Kingdom that they must be born again, he also has the blindness to actually seek to keep an individual out. Is this not offensive? At the end of the same article, in reference to the men raising their hands in praise of their Lord, Mr. Gawthrop tells us that to him this is reminiscent of 50 years ago in a "place called Deutschland". Is this not hatred based on ignorance? I almost threw my copy of "Affirmation" out, but then I thought better of it. Mr. Gawthrop, as I said, writes well on this subject as it is close to his heart. Watch out when he takes up his pen to write about something he is in the dark about.

Dr Peter brought AIDS out into reality from thousands
The short segments the Dr Peter Jepson-Young did for the CBC evening news in Vancouver in the early 90's made the disease of AIDS real for thousands of people in the suburbs.

This book expands on that and follows the life of the disease through one reluctant spokesperson

Great historical perspective; little grasp of China today
I just finished the book and the pages turned well and I was impressed by the the author's use of past examples. His work on early Mao and Zhou's and Jing's roles were especially important and useful. However, I have worked in the media field in Beijing and Shanghai for nearly ten years, and I feel that the autrhor does lack adequate ideas of the media's role today. A simple monitoring of the major papers such as Beijing Youth, Southern Weekly, PLA Times, and Yangcheng Evening News, would throw many of his propositions to the wind.

So, basically kudos to the reasearch of the past, but shame on the author for not realizing that China has indeed changed greatly in the last 6 years. Too bad this was not taken into account in the book.

Finally, solid info and thoughtful analysis!
We've been waiting for years for a book on the Chinese communications system that not only describes it but also explains it and relates it to the economy and larger political milieu. This book is it. The author deftly details changes in the Chinese government's regulation of the communications system and shows how those changes have caused the government to lose control over information flows in Chinese society, what he calls the "symbolic environment". But unlike most commentary on the Chinese media, he doesn't see this loss of government control as contributing to China's democratization, at least not right away. Instead he sees it as causing chaos, or "praetorianism", and predicts a politically uncertain Chinese future in which neither the forces of democracy nor the forces of dictatorship can prevail. He foresees all sorts of new social movements arising in China, but not necessarily democratic movements. It's truly astonishing that this book must have been finished a good six months before the Falun Dafa movement burst upon the scene, but that's exactly the kind of movement the book predicts. A must-read for anyone interested in China.

A lot of questions.
Good content. Some of the answers are out of date even though this is the "new" edition. Also, lacked quite a bit on clinical vignettes. However, if you want to ace the shelf exam, do ALL 1600 questions and you will be completely covered!

Needs time commitment
Good buy for the number of questions. Worth your time if you're going to OB/GYN residency. Too detailed for USMLE Steps 2 & 3.

Arthur C. Clarke & Lord Dunsany: A Correspondence
Published in Paperback by Anamnesis Press (01 July, 1998)
Authors: Arthur C. Clarke, Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett Dunsany, and Keith Allen Daniels
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Great thinkers, boring correspondance
Arthur C. Clarke is most well-known for writing 2001: A Space Odyssey; Lord Dunsany for his fantastic The King of Elfland's Daughter and serving as a primary influence for H.P. Lovecraft. For such gifted writers, this correspondance is remarkably dull - mostly an eager, young, as-yet-unpublished Clarke fawning to his hero, who seems grateful for the attention. This collection is well-meaning but almost completely meritless.

A fascinating book
Fenbug needs to get hir facts straight. Arthur C. Clarke was already a published author when he began to correspond with Lord Dunsany in 1944, and by 1956 -- the last year of their correspondence -- Clarke had published some of his best classic fiction, most notably Childhood's End (1953).

If engaging in reasoned dialogue on topics as fascinating as space exploration and imaginative literature is "fawning," then so be it.

This book is a valuable resource for literary scholars, fans of Clarke and/or Dunsany, and anyone with an interest in the early years of the Space Age. Keith Allen Daniels is to be commended for his editorial and publishing acumen, and for his understanding of the importance of these letters.

Ayes of Texas
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Del Rey Books (November, 1989)
Author: Daniel Da Cruz
Amazon base price: $3.95
Used price: $2.64
Average review score:

The worst novel I have reviewed thus far!
I am sorry but this book was awful. This is the second book I have read by Daniel da Cruz. The first book, Texas on the Rocks, was much the same.

This book takes place in a world, which followed a slightly different turn of political fortune then ours. In this world the Soviet Union has gained the upper hand in the international game of cat and mouse that the US and the USSR have played for decades.

The hero a good ol' boy turned entrepreneur named Gwilliam Forte, is written in the most stereotypical fashion possible. Forte is always right, more brilliant then anyone else in the book, charismatic, a lady killer and anything else you can imagine this side of eternity. Of course everyone and everything involving Texas is superior to everything else. Reading this novel you would think that Texas could conquer the world by sheer intelligence alone.

In the book Forte has to figure out a way to thwart the docking of the Russian navy in one of its "monitoring visits". I don't want to give the plot away but the situation is resolved with totally invented science and the assistance of an old World War II battleship.

This is really a rotten book. There are a number of serious flaws in the book that would have made the book unpleasant by themselves but combined they make the book unbearable.

If you like cliché with absolutely no relation to reality then read this book. If you like character development, plausible plot lines and realistic science then avoid this novel at all costs.

You'll be glad that you read it!! You can't put it down!!
I first picked up the book as something to read on a trip, and I only chose this one because it looked interesting. But as I started reading I couldn't believe how interesting and captivating it was. I was astonished at how detailed and HI-Tech the story was, but at the same time it was still about normal life in our present society. I found the story taught great lessons of our past and how they still affect us today. It talked about hard-work, the military, business, politics, the Hi-Tech industry, wealth, power, friendship, loyalty, the Cold War, everyday life and how as we are all steadily moving into the future the more things change the more they stay the same!! I found the book wonderful, and I find myself reading it again from time to time, because each time I find new twists and turns that make the story that much more real and it draws me into that world and allows me to live right along side it. Again it's a great book, it's not that heavy into Sci-Fi, as it is everyday life, and it is an enjoyable and captivating read. I am so glad that I got the chance to read this book, and I am sure you will feel the same way when you are finished!

I must give credit to Dennett for trying very hard to make his ideas clear, because he does a better job than most philosophers, but the book is still a bit boring.

very interesting
The ideas Dennett raises are (inevitably) very interesting, as we are talking about the brain, so there is lot of material here to keep you thinking. A lot of the arguments he makes don't exactly make sense (i.e. comparisons that don't apply), but his is a voice worth considering.

I'm sorry I wasted my money on this book
An incomplete, factually inaccurate overpriced farce of a book

Outstanding technical and clinical resource
This textbook is a thorough and up to date review of nuclear cardiology. The chapters on physics, instrumentation and radiopharmaceuticals are clearly organized with chapter subheadings that allow the reader to quickly search for specific details. What was most impressive to me about this text is that it has not only the required technical information, but also includes the most recent literature on outcomes, prognosis, and cost effectiveness. The inclusion of these topics makes this book more than just a technical reference. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to keep up to date on the latest concepts in nuclear cardiology.

The Christian Faith
Published in Hardcover by T&t Clark Ltd (April, 1928)
Author: Friedrich Ernst Daniel Schleiermacher
Amazon base price: $34.95
Used price: $42.23
Average review score:

The birth of pseudo-Christian liberal subjectivism
This is a seminal work, all right -- and it set the stage for twentieth-century liberal "Protestantism." Readers of this work should be sure to read J. Gresham Machen's _Christianity and Liberalism_ for a sound doctrinal "take" on Schleiermacher's whole approach.

A Seminal Work in Modern Theology.
Its no coincidence that Schleiermacher is called the 'father of modern theology.' This classic in systematic theology is indispensible to any theology student tho wants to understand liberal theology. The Christian faith is distinctly Christological in nature. Schleiermacher, because of his Moravian upbringing, has great reverance for Christ (unlike some of the modern theologians who were to follow). Another distinguishing characteristic of the Christian Faith is Schleiermacher's idea of "religion as feeling." For Schleiermacher, feeling was what authenticated religion. Another distiguishing feature is Schleiermacher's opinion of other faiths and Christianity's relation to those faiths. He has quite a progressive notion of religious pluralism for a nineteenth century theologian. In short, no theology scholar should be without this monumental work. As an accomponiment, I suggest you purchase Schleiermacher's "On Religion: Speeches to its Cultured Despisers," which is another book that gave birth to liberal theology. Schleiermacher truly was the greatest theologian between Martin Luther and Karl Barth.
