Snarkout Number Two!
Sequel to The Snarkout Boys and The Avacado of Death, this is another great book by D.M. Pinkwater. While it obviously couldn't compare to the origional, simply because the first was SO good, this book is still great. I read the Avacado of Death when I was in middle school (for the first time at least), and didn't discover the sequel until I was in college. So naturally that's a rather long time and my expectations were a little high I'm sure. Still, it was great to see all the characters again, and see Walter and Winston having another adventure. This book is fun to read and I highly reccomend it.

Whoop! Wow! The Devil Gonna Get Us!!
When I read this book in my early nubile childhood , I thought it was just a pretty darn funny piece o' work. Now that I'm a wee bit older and wiser I look back on Snarkout with a sort of awe, respecting it for the sheer genious and underground artistry. Werewolves, crazy speeches, donuts, hotdogs, cult movies, bitter rejects and terrible poets. Every man woman and child should experience belly lauaghter. It deserves to be the first cult classic childrens book.

Perfect bedtime story
I feel as calm as a first snow in an open field when I look at this book.
A whole story with no text, narrated visually with beautiful simple paintings of a boy making a snowman from light till dusk, then going home leaving the snowman only to melt the next day. My 3 year old son loves looking at the pictures & telling the story to me.

Snow Day
This is one of the most wonderful books I've come across in a while. By narrating this story visually, the wordless story opens itself up to a wide array of interpretations, from the literal to the philosophical, reminiscent of classics such as The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery, which was clearly a visual influence. The story revolves around a snowman, built with exuberance by a young boy. The snowman stands triumphant in his prime during the crisp snowy night like an olympic gold medalist, only to experience his inevitable downfall with the coming of the bright sunny morning, like some tragic hero or the common man. Lovingly painted in watercolor with a nod to Japanese influences, Daniel Peddle fully understands how to play with his visuals, in his illustrations and the negative space. He utilizes the whole page, with the negative space representing the glorious snow, which takes up almost the entirety of nearly every page. It's just brilliant. This book is an instant classic that can be enjoyed by a child as well as an adult and especially together. This book will make a delightful gift to any child and I plan to get several copies to give away for the holidays.

Soil Biology Guide

Excellent identification guide!
The reason I got this book was its great keys to soil-dwelling invertebrates. It has very thorough keys even to obscure groups, at least to family level and sometimes to species level! It is much more in-depth than the simple "Soil Biology Guide" name implies. It was written in 1990, so it is not yet out of date. Nearly 1300 pages of keys, habitat info, etc!

A comprehensive guide to the soil ecosystem
This book is a thorough study of soil organisms written in order to be easily used by both beginners and professionals. It needs to be reprinted!!! It is THE book to own when beginning or continuing to study and identify soil invertebrates. I need this book!!

An excellent guide for embracing ecology-friendly living
The Solar House: Passive Heating And Cooling by global environmental issues expert Daniel D. Chiras is an "user friendly" architectural guide to choosing and implementing an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly backup heating system, and thereby making any dwelling both cost-effective and naturally heated and/or air conditioned. Black-and-white sketches clearly illustrate the detailed walk-throughs about the basics of passive solar heating, passive cooling, assessing the performance of one's energy system and much more. An excellent guide for embracing ecology-friendly living, The Solar House is especially recommended as a do-it-yourself home reference for the non-specialist general reader with an interest in making their personal home as comfortable and environmentally friendly as possible.

A Brilliantly Simple Solar Design Book
At last -- a comprehensive, easy-to-read, well-illustrated solar house book, perfect for architectural students, build-it-yourselfers and masters of solar technology as well -- who will benefit from the many important lessons learned.

My delight with the book began when I first saw its elegant cover. The more I read, the more I realized what a treasure it is. I was especially interested in the latest information on radiant floor heating, ground source heat pumps, and passive cooling. It makes me feel good to know that a book this full of information, yet so accessible, may result in significant reductions in the 44% of total household energy used for heating and cooling.

Chiras combines several decades of personal experience with information from some of the best minds in the field. His stated goal of producing a comprehensive and accurate book is well met. Nice job -- get a copy!

Different Approch to Number theory
The author develops the premise that modern number theory evolved from the ancient Greek preoccupation with two mathematical problems. Searching for the esoteric Perfect Numbers (i.e., whole numbers whose proper divisors sum to the number itself 1+2+3=6) and Diophantine Equations (i.e., finding integral solutions to certain algebraic equations, for example, z^2 = x^2 + y^2). The author calls the later Pythagorianism. The book does a good job of showing how Fermat's Little Theorem, Euler's generalization, and the famous Law of Quadradic Reciprocity developed out of the search for Mersenne Primes, and consequently Perfect Numbers. Again, it is interesting to see how Pythagorianism led to the development of algebraic numbers and eventually to the solution of Fermats "Big" Theorem. Along the way the author elaborates on some of the still unresolved conjectures within number theory. The writing can be a little "dense" at times, so that some parts require a second reading. Overall the book is enjoyable to read and you will gain some insight that won't be gleaned from more standard texts.

Spearhead to Victory: Canada and the Great War
Published in Hardcover by Hurtig Pub (July, 1999)
Author: Daniel G. Dancocks
Amazon base price: $29.95
Used price: $17.35

Canada and Australia won the war!
I loved this book. British and American historians have frequently overlooked the huge contribution of the Canadian and Australian forces in WW I, and this book is the remedy. I recommend this book to arrogant Americans so that they will finally learn that the US Army did NOT win WW I. You'll read about how incompetent US General Pershing was, and how the so-called "best-fed" army in the world faced starvation due to poor logistics. Canadians and Australians were the best fighters in this war, and this book tells you how they put the US, British (and of course, the German troops) to shame on the battlefields of Europe.

A valuable and unique perspective on the end of WW I.
Dancocks again approaches Canadian Military history with a fresh eye. His easy writing style and clear prose makes absorbing both the historical facts and their context deceptively easy. He uses a combination of regimental histories and Official Canadian and Imperial histories coupled with personal oral histories to highlight Canada's frequently unsung contribution to the end of the Great War.

Dancocks always relates the events of the battles to the men that are fighting them. This combination powerfully conveys the terror, horror, valour, motivations and insights of those who fought the "War to end all wars". Dancocks embodies all of his narrative with first person accounts that remind the reader of exactly how these campaigns were fought and by whom.

This book occupies a valued place in my military history library. The fact that the author continues to concentrate on Canadian subjects is just another bonus.

A book for the professional bread baker.
This book is an excelient book for both professional and student bakers. Not only does the book introduce the basics of bread baking, it also goes into the chemistry aspects of baking. This wonderful book offers a number of fasinating pictures that show many diffrent folds, rolls and techniques of developing dough. I highly recomend this book for someone who is interested in becoming a professional baker like myself.

A phenomenal book!
This book is absolutely amazing, although it is geared towards the professional baker. There are great photographs of some of the decorative pieces, as well as helpful charts and tables. There are recipes for a number of unusual breads, as well as how to form animals, letters, woven bread baskets, wagons, and many other unusual and impressive breads. This is a great book for anyone interested in the nitty-gritty on bread-making and bread-shaping.

Well done
I spent 7 years in the Navy, this is one of the few books that can make me look back to theose days and smile.

Navy stories so outlandish and funny they must be true
Better make sure your chair has arms, otherwise you'll fall off laughing so hard. Check in with the screwball Navy populated by Lt. Cmdr. Curley Cue, Lt.(jg) Willy Wigglesworth, Adm. Windy Day, Adm. Bugler Bates and the rest to see how life must really be on an aircraft carrier. Written in the 1960s, Gallery's stories still ring true. No matter how technologically advanced today's Navy becomes, its still all about ships and men. And both have their foibles. Gallery exposes them all in this funny book. Don't stop with this one. Write the publisher and ask it to reprint all of Gallery's books. I am still missing a few from my collection.

Starmada Compendium
Published in Paperback by Majestic Twelve Games (01 November, 2001)
Author: Daniel Kast
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Clean, fast, and customizable
Starmada is wisely divided into a basic game (just starships, lasers, shields, and fighters) and a large set of optional rules. This allows new players to have a fast, simple game without reading a mountain of rules, while also providing just about anything hardcore players could want in a starship combat game.

Since the core rules are so simple, the game is eminently customizable. For example, I like to design new movement systems, but don't want to mess with the combat and damage parts of the rules. Others enjoy creating new weapons. Starmada gives a solid default (and many options) for every facet of the game, from which it is easy to hang any other bells and whistles you might want to throw in.

The new Compendium gathers all of the rules from four previous booklets. Not having to flip through all of those is benefit enough, but the rules have also been streamlined and clarified, and a few new goodies have been added. The book also comes with a map, a CD-ROM including the invaluable Starship Construction Assistant program, and a very nice set of full-color counters.

Starmada Plays like I wish Starfleet Battles Did
This system is very simple to learn and brings all the depth of play that a more complicated system might, without the overhead of a lot of paperwork or complicated dice rolls. The starship designs and political entities that Kast and the community have come up with are distinct while at the same time, they allow room for personal stlye to come through in personal ship design. Support for the game is phenomenal as there is a large community of players ready to answer any questions I might have regarding rule interpretation.

The Starmada system captured my attention and has kept it. Mainly because it took me about 15 minutes to learn the combat system and each game, win or lose, has been a very fun experience. Buy this book if you're a gamer, you'll have a great time with it.

The Future of Education
We're currently in a paradigm shift in education, and this book documents how Sudbury Valley School in Framingham, Massachusetts has reacted quite successfully to that shift. They have created a school where "the inmates are in charge," meaning the kids control everything about the school...and do so very successfully. For over 30 years, kids have run the school and gotten a better education as a result that they could get at any other school. A remarkable book, and a remarkable story. If you're into the idea that kids need to be controlled, guided, and "exposed to new ideas," you won't like this book. But if you recognize that kids are their own best guides to learning what they need most, when they need it most, you'll recognize everything in this book. A real gem! Also, check out _Free At Last_ by the same authors.

very interesting thoughts
I think everyone should read this book to keep an open mind about schooling.
