Great insight on what it being a man is from 76 "experts"
A wonderful book of photgrasphs and essays in which thesubjects write on what they think being a man is all about. DanielKaufman has compiled 76 different men from all differen races, agesand socio-econimic conditions. Each of these men write in theri own words what they think it means to be a man. I found this book 10 tems more insightful than any 600 page book written by some so-called expert with a PHD. Extremely insightful, I brought this book a few years ago and I still like to flip through it from time to time.

A helpful & interesting guide to some of my favorite places!
This book inspired me to plan a series of long weekend trips to the lower NC coast, and revisit some of the places I vacationed at as a child/teenager. There are many historic and curious areas and sites pointed out in every chapter, places that we drove by years ago, but never really took notice of. For instance, a civil war ship wrecked close to the beach and now located under a fishing pier is only one of the many curousities Barefoot discusses. I was also inspired to visit places I had never been, such as the town of Southport, at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, and Bald Head Island, just a 20 minute ferry ride away. The descriptions of even the smallest details given by Barefoot lured me to find these wonderful places.I can now appreciate the lower NC coast both from the historical perspective, and from the aspect of its unspoiled, natural beauty.

Trains Across the Continent: North American Railroad History
This is an excellent depiction of American railroading. The addition of some U.S. History makes this superbly interesting. Whether a railroad or history buff (or not), this reading will grab your attention. The light humor also adds to the enjoyment of this book. Filled with very interesting facts on how the early railroads actually created & perfected many of the technologies we know today. You won't want to put this book down once you start reading it!

A Great American Poet At The Height of His Powers
Epstein has made quite a name for himself as a biographer, but it's still in his poetry that he truly shines. No poet of his generation has written both lyric and dramatic poetry with such classical grace, poeams at once moving and intellectually rigorous. "The Traveler's Calendar" follows the structure we have come to expect from an Epstein collection: many lyric poems of dazzling imagery and seductive music, like "Boblink" and "The Circle Dance" ("May love like the evening shadows grow/Till light and life pass away") and a tour de force of a dramatic monologue, "The Genie" (Aladdin's--an allegory about the sacrifices of the artist). The book throughout has a sad beauty as Epstein muses on the losses inevitable in middle age. But it's definitely my favorite of his books.
Trends in Outside Support for Insurgent Movements

A cold, hard, meticulous look at state support
In Trends In Outside Support For Insurgent Movements, Daniel Byman, Peter Chalk, Bruce Hoffman, William Rosenau, and David Brannan effective collaborate to produce a cold, hard, meticulous look at state support, incitement, and sponsorship of insurgencies from the Cold War ear through modern globalization. All types of this practice, from offering fighters or training to simply offering a blank check are closely scrutinized. An incredibly timely book given the world situation today and the American commitment to eradicate rogue state supported international terrorism, and written at a college level with heavy research and annotation, Trends In Outside Support For Insurgent Movements is a fascinating, albeit disturbing, look at political machinations around the world.

Perfect Triceratops Beginner
This is a great book for any small child interested in Triceratops. It covers: where triceratops lived (including illustrated map), relatives of triceratops, tricertops biology, diet, predators, and how they came to their ultimate demise. The book also includes a hands on activity and a short glossary. Pictures are really good and clear. The writing is very fact based, but easy enough for even our four year old to understand (in fact, he now knows more about triceratops than most adults probably know). I highly recommend this book for the dinosaur lover in your family.

an excellent volume on the Trinity
where to begin? this volume is absolutely packed full of excellent essays on the Trinity. divided into different sections (the Biblical witness; the Patristic witness; Systematic issues; Preaching the Trinity), this volume covers more ground than any other edition that i have come across, and combined with the absolutely stellar level of scholarship from all disciplines, the reader is in for a certain treat.
i have a few minor complaints, though. first, that there is no analysis of the FILIOQUE, and connected with this, that there is (as far as i could tell) no real voice for the Eastern Orthodox approach. finally, it seems as though modern defenses of the social model of the Trinity aren't given anything like a fair hearing.
but there is so much that is good in this book! the analysis of augustine's Trinitarian theology is (thank God) a breath of fresh air, and the same can be said for the analysis given here of the Cappadocian formulation. the high point of the book, for me, was van beeck's 'Trinitarian Theology as Participation', which gave a view of all existence and the universe in its totality as saturated in the Trinity.
an excellent book, i highly recommend it.

A Delightful Rendition
When I happened across a copy of this book recently, I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful illustrations which, for me, blended spiritually with the time-honored tradition of the original twelve steps. This is also true of the additional quotes from famous people that are included in this very simple, yet precious volume.

FOR ALL CATHOLICS
Have you ever wondered exactly how the church stands on certain issues, like abortion, war, artificial insemination and the like -- and why? This book is GREAT! The Archbishop that wrote it went into wonderful detail and gave references to find more information concerning each subject, including the exact page of the Cathechism where each subject is discussed.
This is also great for a study-group, faith-sharing group or school (students and teachers) because of the simplicity of the language and there are questions after each subject explanation to help invoke conversation.
All Catholics should check this out, and non-Catholic who are interested in how the church stands on very tough issues.
