Filled with Truth
Taylor is a gifted story teller. He uses stories to pass on wisdom and encouragement to his children. But you don't have to be a child to benefit from his stories. They are valuable for anyone.

Structured in relatively short chapters that each answer one of his child's questions, this book is perfect for being read alone in multiple sittings or outloud to your spouse/friend/or child. Taylor's wisdom is evident, but so is his sense of humor. Don't miss this book.

Blistering
Whenever a discussion of economics in the modern space age arises, I recommend this book. I think it is really the seminal work on this topic, and that not enough people have read it.

What I like best is how completely the costs of extremely high flight are quantified. The Pegasus comes off looking very bad, and rightly so, I think.

You should read this book. Maybe twice.

Life in the House of Death

Leilah Wendell readers, take note!
If you're a collector of Leilah Wendell's books, you need this one! Her partner Daniel Kemp lets the reader in on the history of the Westgate (aka 'The House of Death') peppered with his own takes on New Orleans, life in general, metaphysics, 'magick' and other topics that have struck his fancy. Includes anecdotes of happenings at The Westgate, as well as several very reverently written essays on his own favorite subject, the entity of Night, and a few humorous and 'oddball' characters he's brought to life in print. Like all the Westgate Press books, this one is beautifully bound, in matte black with metallic red lettering on both covers, and with varying font styles inside as well as an illustration or two. Alas, the price for such a small volume (just under 100 pages), isn't cheap, but it's still a worthy addition to any Westgate collector's set! Bonne Nuit!

We Need More Men's Books Like This One!
In The Life of A God-Made Man, Dr. Doriani has done a great service to the church. As he says, the book is a proposal and a protest:
"It protests all the books that reduce the life of a Christian man to a string of techniques and how-to lists. It proposes instead that the course of the Christian man is the course of his God....It also proposes that we foucs on character over technique and law. God has renewed His sons and is remaking us in His image. Therefore, it is our heritage, our destiny, to become more like the Father and the Son. Men are most true to themselves when most like Christ." (p. 10 from the Preface).

In this book, grace is proclaimed and applied to men's relationship to God, their families, their jobs and even their recreation (His chapter on A Man and His Play is excellent!). Instead of being given ten steps to be a better man (Doriani calls this kind of thing "Nike Christianity"), which none of us can ever follow, Doriani shows where and how the power comes from to change, and how God has provided for His sons to conform more and more to the image of Christ.

The book is filled with solid biblical support & analysis and yet it is also filled with helpful illustrations and stories to make it a joy to read.

The book also has discussion questions at the end of each chapter and it would be a great book to use in small groups and men's groups. I plan to recommend it to a lot of the men in my church.

An excellent reading of a thought-provoking biography
A new addition to the generally excellent series of Naxos Audio Books is Hesketh Pearson's (NA 221612). Here we have a 2:27 hour abridgment read by the now internationally known British actor Simon Russell Beale, with very short scenes read by David Timson, Daniel Philpott, and Caroline Faber.

Many scholars might carp at the choice of authors, since Pearson takes things from an actor's point of view; and a good deal of his assumptions are based on the "fact" that running a theater back then differed little from Pearson's own experiences in that field.

He tries to run a careful course between using passages from the plays as "proof" that Shakespeare must have thought thus and so and realizing that what a character says in a play may not (and probably doesn't) reflect the author's personal point of view. (Often the former method is valid. For example, Shakespeare almost never makes a positive reference to dogs or a negative one to highly spiced foods. One can reasonably assume he disliked dogs and bland food.)

Yet Pearson often makes statements that rest on lines from the plays but do not really prove anything. Can we really take Othello's plea before killing himself as Shakespeare's own? Especially annoying is basing claims that the actor Shakespeare played certain parts on mere say so's that have been passed on from one generation to the other. It would be nice to know, for example, that Shakespeare acted the Prologue to "Henry V" so he could point to himself as "the bending author"; but this seems wish-fantasy on Pearson's part rather than even reasonable surmise. But Pearson is never boring and that is what also counts in a recorded reading such as this one.

Beale's delivery cannot be faulted, nor can the short contributions of the three assistants. I know that I will play this many times again, especially on long car rides. I opted for the CD version (which I transferred to tape for the car), and there are enough tracking cues to make finding what you want pretty easy. Highly recommended.

THANK YOU DANIEL
The author managed to transport me back in time to the day of Daniel. The way she portrayed him from his childhood through his adult life made me feel as if he were an old friend. It was wonderful to re-live the ordeal of the fiery furnace. Overall, I just came away from the book with a renewal of the value that it is always right to do the right thing.

Linear Programming: An Introduction to Finite Improvement Algorithms
Published in Hardcover by Elsevier Science Ltd (October, 1984)
Author: Daniel Solow

Used price: $24.00

A book on LP theory with special attention to proofs
The book ( the edition I refer to 1984 edition) is an important contribution in the context of teaching/ self-learning linear programming theory. The special significance of the book is that there is a chapter (three) on proof techniques and in every later chapters, it shown how mathematical proofs are done in the development of linear programming theory, algorithm development and analysis of the methonds. Its focus is on simplex algorithm. An appendix discusses the concepts about ellipsoid algorithm. It would have been ideal if Daniel Solow has written a book in this style on Interior point algorithms, since the understanding proofs is more important in this context. The book is written in a form where any non mathematician also can learn abouth the theory with self effort. The book can be a good read for any user of Excel solver. The book can be used as introductory book for book ` Optimization and computational logic' by Mcaloon & Tretkoff.

An easy to understand self help herbal medicinal book
This is the best book I've found for clear and easy to understand herbal information. The way that it is organized is very easy to follow. The author has a great command of herbal medicine; making it easy for me to follow. It has become my herbal 'bible.' It clearly tells me which herbs to take for specific conditions. The best herb book around!
