Rethinking High School: Best Practice in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership
Published in Paperback by Heinemann (29 November, 2000)
Authors: Harvey Daniels, Marilyn Bizar, and Steven Zemelman
Amazon base price: $24.00
Average review score:

A must-read for high school teachers
We often hear how the elementary schools need to be reformed; very rarely does the reform reach the high school level. Most people think it's too late by then. This book encourages change, and the authors are speaking from experience, not from a textbook. Daniels, et.al., have outlined 11 essentials for running an effective secondary school that focus on students and learning. What a novel idea! They're simple ideas, but their implementation is vital. The book is easy to read, inspirational, and motivating.

Rethinking Tradition in Modern Islamic Thought

Indispensible
Brown's book is the best introduction to how tradition is being understood and and re-defined in modern Sunni Islamic thought. One would recommend before reading this text having at least some familiarity with the Islamic tradition and modern Islamic history, however. Brown himself demonstrates an excellent familarity with the sources he examines and languages and contexts which produced them. He focuses mainly on the two intellectual powerhouses of modern Islamic thought, Pakistan-India and Egypt. His conclusions demonstrate that paradigms that placed tradition and modernity diametrically opposed to each other (cf. W.C. Smith) are erroneous as tradition can also be a conduit for profound social change as is the case with Islamic tradition. Moreoever, he argues forcefully that modern approaches to tradition and religious authority are born out of a confidence that Islam is growing stronger, not from a fear that it is threatened by a tide of modernity and progress.

Revelation - A Theology of Hope
The distinguished scripture authority, Wilfrid Harrington presents a thorough and detailed commentary on the Book of Revelation. Although some read Revelation and find a glipse of perdition, Harrington reads Revelation and finds hope for all of humanity.

Jesus Christ, the Lamb, slain for our salvation, has come back to rescue, not to condemn. It is God's intention, and the Lamb's, that all will be saved!

Going line by line through the text of Revelation, Harrington explains how his underlying premise is derived. With scholarly attention to the original Greek text, Harrington constructs an understanding of Revelation that is filled with joy and hope for eternal life.

Harrington's work measures up nicely in comparison to the other volumes in the commentary series, Sacra Pagina. This volume is well worth the investment, particularly for the homilist, the teacher, the pastoral counselor or those attempting to help others understand the Book of Revelation.

Revolution and Revolutionaries: Guerrilla Movements in Latin America (Jaguar Books on Latin America (Cloth), No 17)
Published in Hardcover by Scholarly Resources (September, 1999)
Author: Daniel Castro
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:

Castro's book a unique look at guerrillas
Castro sets out to compile an anthology of literature on guerrillas in Latin American history, and he does so in a concise, easy to read volume. I read this book when it was a coursepack, and I liked it then (I also liked the class), as I like it now. Castro's selections sample fairly well-known guerrillas, such as Che Guevara and Zapata, as well as those the average reader has not heard of, like Inti Peredo and Tupac Amaru. More importantly than any one selection, Castro's book sets out the revolutionary tradition in Latin America in a timeline that stretches from colonial Peru to contemporary Central America--and it flows together from piece to piece very well. Simply put, it is a useful resource to any sociologist, anthropologist, or historian interested in Latin American social movements. I would highly recommend it.

A terrific introduction to a non-traditional artist
Dan Mufson quite masterfully brings together all of the elements required to provide real insight into the work of Reza Abdoh. It is a shame that more people have not been exposed to his work. My daughter enjoyed the book as well, and getting her to read anything of any length is usually a challenge.

Rhythm Reading: Elementary Through Advanced Training
Published in Paperback by Mayfield Publishing Company (February, 1989)
Author: Daniel Kazez

Used price: $16.95

A truly helpful book
For any of you looking for a good book on rhythm reading the book by Daniel Kazez titled "Rhythm Reading - Elementary Through Advanced Training" is quite good. Daniel Kazez is a cellist and teaches at Wittenberg, University in Springfield, Ohio.

It moves from simple rhythmic principles to more complex with lots of practice exercises. It introduces each rhythmic figure as a cell and focuses on the rhythmic patterns with simple word patterns that help in the initial learning. The book also has exercises that contain many rests. So many other books of this type consist of endless patterns of rhythmic figures without rests. Having to count through rests increases the difficulty and gives much better overall musical practice. Most of the exercises are written on single lines and really focus on the rhythm rather than trying to read notes on the usual 5 line staff. Later in the book there are more musical examples to help put the rhythms in musical context. There are review questions after each chapter and listings of pieces of music that illustrate the various rhythms just studied.

All in all it is a very good book for anyone wanting to improve their rhythmic skills.

Rice and Slaves: Ethnicity and the Slave Trade in Colonial South Carolina
Published in Textbook Binding by Louisiana State University Press (August, 1981)
Author: Daniel C. Littlefield
Amazon base price: $27.50
Average review score:

Excellent, Readable Study
In this thorough and readable study, Daniel C. Littlefield examines the African heritage of rice cultivation in colonial South Carolina. Littlefield discusses the choices rice planters made in securing workers from certain African regions; he also discusses the knowledge these Africans brought to the plantation economy. Littlefield argues that expertise in rice cultivation mostly came to South Carolina from Africa. Rice was grown by the Malagasy, the people of Madagascar, and by many peoples of Upper Guinea (a region encompassing the modern nations of Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia). South Carolina planters, in fact, paid the highest prices for workers from Senegambia (the environs of the Senegal and Gambia rivers), a major center of rice cultivation in Africa. Littlefield argues that, throughout the era of the slave trade, South Carolina merchants and planters showed an increasingly sophisticated knowledge of African regions and ethnic groups. He also asserts that not only African labor, but African expertise helped generate the wealth of the opulent Carolina Lowcountry. This work should prove interesting to those interested in African-American history, Southern history, and colonial American demography. Particularly intriguing is Littlefield's research based on the newspaper advertisements for runaway slaves in South Carolina. That portion of the work includes a list of different African ethnic groups present in South Carolina.

This is one of the best books I know of to help you choose a dog according to it's personality traits, and how those traits fit yours, your family's, your lifestyle. What a dog looks like is nowhere near as important as what it IS like. This book truly helps you to get the right dog for you!

Rincon de Haikus
Published in Hardcover by Editorial Seix Barral (November, 1999)
Authors: Mario Benedetti and Daniel Defoe
Amazon base price: $11.70
Average review score:

Facinante
