Don't get lost without it!
Interesting book that shows dozens of ways to make shelters in the wilderness. A good book for those of us who love traipsing through the bush, which in turn leaves us with that small chance of getting lost or stranded. The book I got was published by Loompanics Unlimited, and copied from the original 1914 edition, but I imagine all editions by all publishers are the same.

If you love the woods you need this book!!!!
I have lived in a very rural area my whole life. I love the forest, and because of this book I've been able to enjoy it even more. "Uncle Dan" Beard has lots of great ideas and illustrations to show how poeple used to, and still do, build shelters in the forest. It's great to have a historical resource to all of these techniques and ideas that are from the past - which otherwise might be forgotten about. GREAT BOOK!!

What a great read!
This book comes from a time when hunters and conservationists were in league with each other. Many of the tips he gives are not appropriate for parks but are still useable on PRIVATE land. Not for effete tree hugger types.

Great for maintaining & servicing small B&S engines
This is a great reference for care and servicing of small B&S lawn mower engines. Contains countless photos with illustrations and some tables, but mostly a lot of color photos. Contains chapters entitled "Maintenance", "Basic Repair", and "Advanced Repair". "Maintenance" includes servicing spark plugs and air cleaners. "Basic Repair" includes troubleshooting, adjusting the carburetor, and replacing the rewind. "Advanced Repair" includes overhauling the carburetor, replacing the ignition, removing cylinder head carbon deposits, servicing the valves, and servicing the engine brake. The book does not cover overhauling the engine, but is a great reference for lawn mower owners who want to do their own maintenance.

GREAT MYSTERY AND ROMANCE!
Aha! Senator James Marshall McCord seems to be a man of many secrets. He loves politics and not ranching. His daughter, Olivia, has been running the ranch, Altimira, for the past two years.

Thanksgiving brought about a gathering of Senator McCord and Olivia, the ranch foreman, Freddie Caulder, her cousin, Robin McCord, her friend, Natalie and Whitt.

Levi was distinctly surprised when her father suggested a vacation just before he should be throwing his hat in the presidential ring.

Whoaa! On her way back to the ranch she notices that her bodyguards have disappeared and someone has taken the battery out of her phone.

Her kidnapping leads to a fast trip to Montana and more attempts on her life and the life of her kidnapper, Seth Gantry.

What is going on here? Even Seth is having a hard time trying to figure it out. Nothing was going right!

Seth's partner, Jerilyn Ryers helps in the kidnapping but something else changes her.

Seth's former friend, Alex Wells has been released from prison early. Something wasn't right.

Seth's mentor, Wally Stanley, was the only one who knew what was going on and someone was going to make sure he didn't tell.

Was Olivia becoming a willing pawn in a mixed-up identity crisis? She did know that her father would protect her if at all possible. And now Seth had to take over that job and unravel the mystery of killings and protect his love.

Definitely recommended with a --M. Great beginning to the McCord Family Countdown series.

Wonderful!
B.J. Daniels has written a book that offers readers suspense, humor and, of course, romance. A recommended read!

Great start to a fabulous series!
B.J. Daniels starts the McCord series with a high level of tension--both sexual tension and suspense. This book never lets up the pace. Seth and Levi are two well-developed characters that the reader comes to care about deeply. I couldn't wait to see what happens to the rest of the people introduced in this one! Great read!

A fun book
I bought Gradshteyn & Ryzhik because I had to write an answer to some homework problem in some physics class that I took. The problem had contorted itself into a perverse elliptic integral and its recovery was beyond my means, so I went to the bookstore, looked for something fat and Soviet, and found this gem. I forked over the cash for it, figuring that it was a long-term investment.

I took it home and dutifully plagiarized some of its lines to satisfy my physics professor. For the next few months, that was the mode in which I used this book: read physics problem, translate into elliptic or hypergeometric beast, look up answer in G&R, cover up my tracks, get 9 or 10 points on the problem. Occasionally, I would own up to having looked something up.

The book served its purpose well. Subsequently, I studied some integrals of the spinning top that were more or less right out of Nikiforov's book on special functions (another excellent source for those of you that would like to "earn" a PhD), and G&R stood well by its side. Indeed, I discovered how much fun it was to look up an integral whose complicated solution had been derived elsewhere, and then to look for patterns by analyzing the immediate neighbors of the given integral on the preceding and subsequent lines in G&R.

After I was done with answering questions from physics professors, the book sat on the shelf taking up more room than several of its neighbors put together. Nonetheless, its binding was good, its typesetting clear, and its terse and copious stream of forbidding integral forms was pleasing to the eye.

Some time passed, and one day I asked myself just what would motivate anybody to write such a large collection, so I started rummaging through its pages looking for a pattern. I realized that its organization was excellent (which would explain why I was able to find the answers for my homework), and I also found some sections that were just plain fun. The very beginning lists some sums of infinite series that can be derived during lunch or while waiting for a friend at a cafe (e.g. sum of k^3 = [1/2(n)(n+1)]^2 ). Then one can read about numbers and functions named after Euler, Jacobi, Bernoulli, Catalan... each line, more or less, is cross-referenced, so after you have given up trying to derive that darned product representation of the gamma function, you can go to the book in the library and see how Whittaker did it.

After about 15 years of owning this book, I am nowhere near done with it. If you like math, and you want insurance against being bored, this book just might do the trick. As a bonus, it puts cute matrix stuff in the back (e.g. the "circulant") which one can read when desiring a break from the integrals. I know the book seems expensive, but think of if as spending about two bucks a year on it.

I see that one can now obtain a CDRom version of G&R. An intriguing option, specially because it outputs in TeX; but really, how can anyone resist the large, stubby charm of its paper version?

G&R can help you to deal with members of the opposite sex. I once used it to scare away a girlfriend that was becoming much too annoying, by pretending to be thickly engrossed in the process of memorizing every single integral in the "special functions" chapters. As for my mother, she was particularly proud of me when I showed her that I could actually understand "randomly selected" pages from this book (I don't suppose that I am giving anything away by remarking that books open naturally on sections that have been previously examined).

For those of you that are concerned about home security, G&R is also a weapon. Some people surround themselves with baseball bats or, if they are particularly reckless, a handgun or two... I prefer to keep a fully-loaded G&R by my pillow, which I can hurl at any prowler at a moment's notice. Its shape is surprisingly well adjusted to the hand for the purposes of hurling, and if the covers are bound by a rubber band, the book maintains its shape quite stably as it sails across the room. Sell your Smith & Wesson and buy yourself a Gradshteyn & Ryzhik. You won't regret it.

Daunting at first but worth it.
Before it was much use, I had to read the section as to how the book is organized. As the other reviewers state the integrals are comprehensive and as far as I have used correct. The integrals are very useful, but this book includes many other features that I have found helpful as a graduate student. The sections on Hermite and Legendre polynomials are especially helpful for students of Electricity and Magnetism, Quantum Mechanics, and Mathematical physics (you won't have to hunt in several books to find what you need). The included identities for hyperbolic and trig functions are very helpful simplifying homework answers, mostly because of their comprehensive nature. This book is great because it seems to have everything and most people will not need to buy another table. The binding is good also, so it should last many years with normal care. This is a very good investment.

Gigantic, but well organized and highly accurate
Gradshteyn and Ryzhik is to the CRC Mathematical Tables as the unabridged Oxford English Dictionary is to Webster's Collegiate. Besides being big, it's easy to find things in, because of the way the integrals are organized into classes. Like any other integral tables, you'll probably have to make a change of variables or two to get your problem into a standard form, but since the classes are well covered, you have a big target to shoot for, so your chances of finding your integral tabulated are excellent.

An unscientific sampling indicates that this book has remarkably few errors. It really helped me through grad school.

Excellent Info
This book is a great start for a fledgling vintner and appears to have enough detail to be useful even after becoming competent. It doesn't assume you know anything about winemaking, giving detailed descriptions of the various processes and explaining the purpose and importance of each of the steps. Source information for supplies is also very helpful.

Techniques in Home Winemaking - happy customer :)
Excellent book, at least for a beginner, which I am. Certainly very useful for experienced winemakers due to lots of advanced topics. Was a clear winner after comparing it with other books on the same subject. Very clear and to the point, well organized. I definetly recommend it!

A competent guide to making premium grape wines at home
This is a very good book. The rather lofty objectives inferred by its title and stated in its "Preface" are more than adequately met. Indeed, the book is geared toward achieving good wine from average grapes through proven methods of balancing aroma, body, clarity, color, taste, and style. In all, it succeeds in achieving these goals.

The book is laid out in a logical order that progresses from the general and introductory to the specific and detailed. Among the introductory topics are a discussion of wine styles, grapes, juices, concentrates, and an analysis of wine itself. The author then discusses winemaking equipment and the additives and chemicals used to control musts and shape the character of the wines produced by controlling sugar, alcohol, acidity, pH, and sulfur dioxide. He discusses the preparation of the grapes for processing, the maceration process, pressing, alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation, and stabilization. Not only does he explain the processes themselves, but he offers sound advice and skillful techniques even old hands will appreciate. He then devotes a well-written chapter to clarification methods and products, from simple racking schedules to a variety of fining products and filtration systems. He then moves into and through the all-important and oft-overlooked subject of blending varieties and vintages to achieve more complex and interesting wines. His chapter on oak barrels is perhaps the best I have read. Not only does he thoroughly discuss the preparation and maintenance of oak, but also traditional and modern methods of fermenting and aging wines in oak, including spoilage problems, how to treat them, and more importantly how to prevent them. Alternative oaking methods are also discussed. Finally, he concludes the basics of winemaking by discussing bottling, closures and cellaring.

Had Pambianchi stopped there, his book would have surpassed most in useful content. Instead, he spends three chapters discussing the ins and outs of making sparkling wines, ports and icewines. From must preparation to specific techniques of alcoholic fermentation for each, he explains the fundamentals with clarity and thoroughness. For sparkling wines, the bottle fermentation, disgorgement, dosage, and bottling are the final steps that lead to success or failure. Portwine making is not simply fortifying a sweet still wine, and icewine making is not simply prematurely stopping the fermentation in a late harvested, highly-acid, very sweet, grape must. Pambianchi clarifies these differences and defines the essence of each. Here, his book excells.

He then goes back to the basics and discusses vinification and winemaking problems anyone could encounter and how to treat them. This is a wonderful chapter for anyone who ever encounters one of these, for Pambianchi discusses the 14 most common problems and their resolutions better than do most authors of similar books. When combined with his coverage of the problems associated with oak barrel aging, this book's value is potentially enormous.

Lastly, the book contains a number of very valuable appendices. But the whole of the book is peppered with detailed and useful charts, tables and illustrative figures. I highly recommend this book.

Soothed My Grief
A precious friend gave this to me just after my father died last month. It was the most timely, wonderful thing I have ever received. It expressed her desire to comfort and protect me and her understanding that what I was going through wasn't easy....and there wasn't much she could do except show me she cared. What a gift.

A voluptuous and heart-touching book that speaks to the soul
Give this to anyone who is a softy at heart and who loves beauty, flowers, and poetry. Magical reproductions. Each page could be framed.

A feel good book
As an artist and writer and avid reader; I love this book. I read it whenever I want to feel good. I can't wait until Christmas to give it to my artist friends. It is truly one of the most beautiful books I have ever seeen. The art images are beautiful and the spirit of the book is beautiful. I sent it to my new grandson and hope all these wishes come true for him. I can't wait to read it to him when he is older.

a touching story
... I set out to read one of his earlier novels - a touching piece entitled The Song of Daniel. It was a very heartfelt and sincere story about a young man named Daniel Mitchell, living in a world of his own. It was a peaceful life - an escape from reality that he created for himself, after he had been exposed to unspeakable violence in his early childhood. This realm of Daniel's remains untouched, until he meets worldly and somewhat cynical Rebecca. As a result, they learn much from each other. In this masterpiece, Williams has conveyed Daniel's thoughts, vulnerabilities, and deepest fears with such an indescribable intricacy that puts us in his shoes. Finally Daniel deals with the uprising of his past in his own way. I really enjoyed this book.

A hauntingly memorable novel
I read Song of Daniel some years ago, and I still think of it with wonder. The plot is moving, the characters unforgettable, and the writing tender and loving. In fact, the book is the best sort of "southern" novel. To a southerner, that does not mean that the book is about the South, although Williams' evocations of the southern setting are loving and poetic. Rather, the southern novel seems to distinguish itself by the author's love of language. Williams' voice is gentle, beautiful, and touching--sometimes to the point that it evokes tears. But don't think that the book is maudlin. The tenderness is genuine, authentic. Of special interest to those familiar with the marvelous (and largely forgotten) Georgia poet, Byron Herbert Reece, a subplot involves the research of a University of Georgia professor into just such a Georgia mountain poet. Song of Daniel gripped and moved me as few books ever have. Its power over the imagination and the emotions is so great that I have not reread it yet: after perhaps ten years, it is still too strong in my memory. But it holds a special place among those books that I _will_ reread. Although they are very different writers, the only southern novelist I would compare with Williams (based on this book) is Walker Percy, and that's the highest praise I can offer. Buy this book and take it to a quiet place.

read this
I love the song of daniel. when you read it, you feel like you are sitting next to daniel in the cemetary, the details are so vivid. it's the first book I've ever read that I literally couldn't put down. I read it in one day, and would recommend it to anyone who needs to read a book they will never forget.

A consistent pleaser
My son was given this book for his first birthday and it's been a consistent favorite since. The text is extremely simple and repetitive which I think is good for very young readers. I am sure this book is one of the reasons that "hot" was one of his first words. However, I think the main reason that he likes it is because we both bang the pages hard as I say "splash!" and likewise act out "whoosh sploosh" and "squirt squirt". For this reason our copy is looking pretty battered by now - but we've had a lot of fun along the way!

A masterful presentation
Big, bold, and bright are words that describe McDonnell's expressive illustrations. Warm yellows and then cooler blue undertones subtly reinforce the heat, and subsequent refreshment you can almost feel along with the sweltering jungle animals who find a fun way to cool down on a hot, hot day-a rich accompaniment to the slim, streamlined, straightforward text. Well done!

Great elephant book for little kids!!
The little elephant is hot and leads the other animals to the water for a drink and a splash. The pictures are beautiful and the words are simple and catchy. My 3 year old loves this book - and knows the entire story. Great book to initiate conversations about how to cool off during the hot summer, as well as talking about animal behaviors.

Eat Your Way Thru A Vacation!!!
I was so inspired by this book, that I used it to plan a one week gastronomic vacation in Texas. Using this book as a guide, we got several of my fellow Texans living in Nooooo Yawk City together a scavenger hunt around the Hill Country in search of food, golf and honky tonks using this book as a guide. The record weight gain by a member of our expedition was 8 pounds, which is a pretty strong recommendation for this book. I strongly suggest renting youself a bigass Cadillac or SUV and doing a tour yourself w/ Texas on the Halfshell at your side. Of note, although the authors do mention their propensity to get speeding tickets on their one year drive around Texas, they did not give any details of where the Dept of Public Safety guys were hiding. Watch out for the uncompromising DPS cowboy in Dripping Springs. He will refuse to believe that you haven't been drinking if you've been to Lukenbach, which I hadn't. God Bless Texas!!!!

Best HEARTBURN ever felt. Midland,TX
As previous writer, it is the best TexMex cookbook ever published. I have had my copy since it was published in 1982. Pages have worn out, I have to find another copy. These recipies are not for the squimish, but for people who have a taste for the hotter side.

Deep in the Heart of Tex-Mex food
Do not use this book if you are looking for nuevo Tex Mex or heart healthy, dietetic fare. I've been using this cook book for over 10 years as my basic, definitive reference for classic recipies. While it is the best book that I have ever seen for its shear number of award wining chili recipies, it is also excellent for salsas, barbeque (dry rubs and sauces), beans (Red Caldwell's Beans-R-Best) and chicken fried steak. Believe everything they say about technique and difficulty of making good Texas barbeque. I have just about worn out my second copy and will soon start looking for my third.

Very good book but newer edition by same authors is better.
This was an excellent book with detailed coverage of threads programming even down to how various hardware architectures affect multithreaded program behavior. However there is a more current edition under a different name (Multithreaded Programming with Pthreads) by the same authors that is more current that I would recommend instead (everything in this book is in the newer book).

A good beginner's book on Multithreaded programming
I would describe the books as concise, precise and extremely readable. The authors use fluid language and use the right technical terms in the right places. One of the best Computer Science books I have ever read. Definitely a good reference(though the book is not a comprehensive Operating Systems book) for a beginner who is looking to gain conceptual knowledge about Operating Systems in general and Multithreading in particular.

Great Intro to the Concepts and Issues of Thread Programming
A well written book that clearly explains the concepts and issues of thread programming. It provides the neccessary background information to understand the overall thread context and then describes the specific issues in turn. It does not over whelm the reader with technical details but concentrates on one issue at a time. It's a great book that I highly recommend!
