Symbolist Drama: An International Collection
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (March, 1985)

Where else can you find these plays?
This is not a collection that will appeal to the average reader, not even the average reader of drama. But if you have an interest in the Symbolist movement of the late 19th and early 20th century, this book makes an excellent starting point. Though the Symbolists get little mainstream attention today, the movement shook the stranglehold realism had on theatre at the time, and opened the floodgates for Expressionism, Absurdism, and all the various "isms" that have followed.
Many of these plays may seem bizarre at first glance, but all are fascinating, and a few (such as Maeterlinck's "The Intruder" and Briusov's "The Wayfarer") could still hold an audience today. The translations are not always elegant, but the scholarship is sound, and honestly, where else are you going to find these plays? An excellent addition to any collection of early 20th century drama.

THE Top Notch Medical Reference Book for Scleroderma
As webmaster of Scleroderma from A to Z (sclero.org), a 550+ page site that is available in 11 languages, I find myself turning to this book for solid medical information nearly every single day.

This is a full-fledged medical book, suited for doctors, researchers, and for patients who are at ease with complicated medical jargon...or who are willing to wade through it to understand more about the disease and its possible complications.

You will definitely find more information in this book than anywhere on the Internet. It is an absolute must for rheumatology libraries, and for all doctors who have patients that are unable to travel to a scleroderma treatment center.

I am continually shocked by the numbers of patients I hear from who have suffered scleroderma symptoms for years -- and even decades -- before being properly diagnosed. If more doctors read this book, and kept scleroderma in mind as a possible diagnosis, this could prevent untold misery and waylaid diagnosis for many people.

Please get this book -- and study it well! -- if you care for any scleroderma patients. This is a very complex, devastating, and all-too-often deadly disease which will bring to bear all of your medical expertise.

This book also covers a wide array of scleroderma-like illnesses. It explains rare complications and the nearly the very latest information available on the front of scleroderma research.

Drs. Clements and Furst are known as scleroderma experts worldwide, and are dedicated scleroderma researchers and clinicians. There is simply no better medical book about scleroderma available in the world today.

Excellent Potpourri Of Obscure Basketball Literature
Daniel Rudman's book "Take It To The Hoop" is an excellent compilation of some of the most finely written basketball literature in existence. It contains some stories about great but obscure basketball players.
This book contains a reprint of a story written by Roy Blount, Jr. and originally printed in an issue of "Sports Illustrated" in the early 1970's. It is entitled "47 Years A Shot Freak". It is one of the most unusual basketball stories you will ever encounter. It is the story of basketball trick shot specialist Wilfred Hetzel who for 47 years traveled around the United States performing basketball trick shooting shows at assembly school programs and pregame and halftime shows at collegiate and professional games.
When I read this unique story about Wilfred Hetzel it inspired me to develop my own very unusual basketball trick shooting skills. I perform my own one-person basketball trick shooting comedy and inspirational/motivational shows and have achieved national recognition for my very rare basketball trick shooting ability.

A great intro to what the rainforest is like as a newcomer
Arthur Conan Doyle (Author of Sherlock Holmes), EO Wilson (famous tropical biologist), W. Somerset Maughm, Joseph Conrad, Alfred Russel Wallace (of Wallace's Line), and Henry Morton Stanley (excerpt from "The Finding of Livingstone") are to name but of few of the all-star authors featured in this book. Contains a huge number of excerpts from fiction novels, non-fiction books and essays, most of which are well-written (see above) and ALL of which are well-chosen. I will be teaching a tropical field course for high school students, and this is a perfect literary journey to help them with theirs.

A self-made man
Around Adair, Iowa, where Mr. Danels and his family were brought up and lived a good deal of their lives, "Lee," as he was known, was just another oldtimer with yarns to spin. It was up to a cousin from California to catch the romance of his tales and convince him to commit them to tape, from which she transcribed this book. The resourceful Mr. Daniels sustained himself by a variety of agricultural pursuits, beginning at about the start of the twentieth century, when he was 18 years old. But throughout his life, he returned to trading and selling horses, sometimes for the U.S. Cavalry, sometimes for his own profit. Along the way, he reared a family and had many adventures illustrative of life in rural mid-America during the century gone by. At the time his book came out, Mr. Daniels was a hale and hearty 105 years old.

Targum Jonathan of the Former Prophets: Introduction, Translation and Notes (The Aramaic Bible, Volume 10)

An outstanding series
"The Aramaic Bible" is an outstanding reference work which is indispensible for any serious student of the Hebrew Bible. The Targums were Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible interspersed with rabbinic commentary. The Targums, which date to the middle of the first millenium and earlier, provide insights as to how the Jews (and some early Christians) actually interpreted the texts. Until now, it was difficult for someone not versed in Aramaic to have access to these documents; thus the appearance of not just a translation, but a scholarly edition is most welcome.

I used several of these volumes (including this one) in seminary while doing exegetical papers and found them informative beyond belief.

Not Just For Love Junkies!
Tarot D'Amour is a wonderful addition to the literature on Tarot. It is written by a husband and wife team who bring a unique blend of training, skill, and experience to their work. According to the book's cover, Kooch Daniels has deep roots in the Tarot, having worked as a professional card reader, Tantra practitioner, and metaphysical scholar for over 25 years. Her husband, Victor Daniels, is a psychologist and university professor. As a result of this collaboration, we get a very deep, wise, non-dogmatic work that is firmly rooted in the best insights of clinical psychology and the most profound visions of esoteric research and practice. The fact that these two streams of thought flow together so seamlessly in this collaboration, seemingly from a single voice, is a testament to the efficacy and power of the relational approach they describe.

I especially like the authors' permissive, flexible, non-dogmatic approach throughout. They offer guidelines rather than rules. For example, they say, "But beware of getting locked in too tightly to the cards' usual symbolic meanings... The more you're willing to use your own interpretations and intuition instead of relying on a book for the meaning of the symbols, the more skilled you'll become."

The book's title and subtitle ("Find Love, Sex, and Romance in The Cards") might give the misleading impression of either flippancy or a very narrow focus. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, I found this book to be a very solid piece of work. At times, the tone is playful in relation to love, sex, and romance, which makes it a lively read, yet the overall treatment is grounded and earnest.

I think this book will appeal not only to individuals and couples looking to enrich romantic and sexual relationships but also to a much wider audience interested in using the Tarot for self-exploration and personal development. The book has much to offer for beginner and Tarot adept, alike.

I, myself, for example, have used the Tarot for over 30 years as a teaching tool in a variety of college-level courses but not for the purpose of giving readings. Now, I find myself drawn in that direction and, surprisingly, there is plenty of concrete guidance in the Daniels' book on that topic. In fact, the first section of the book is titled, "The Art of Reading" and the fourth chapter is called, "Guidelines for Readings." Not only do they cover the sorts of attitudes and skills one must cultivate but they also show several "spreads," including a basic three-card spread, the Celtic Cross, the Chakra spread, and a double Chakra spread especially for couples.

I will be using Tarot D'Amour as a reference book. It has a number of very useful tables and summaries, covering such things as the significance of lower and higher arcana, correspondence of higher arcana cards to the Jungian archetypes, numerological and asterological correlations, correspondences between the four suits and the elements, and so on.

Part II of Tarot D'Amour is titled, "The Cards and Their Stories" and there is a page or more devoted to each of the 72 Tarot cards, with an accompanying illustration from the Universal-Waite deck. For each card, there are paragraphs on Key Meanings, Reversed Meanings, Romantic Interpretation, Emotional Interpretation, and Sexual Interpretation. It is the romantic and sexual interpretations that fill a unique niche and give this book a special something extra.

I expect Tarot D'Amour to become a classic that will find a place on many a Tarot enthusiast's bookshelf.

Using his dark magic, Isnard makes Allie fall in love with him, and draws her over to the dark side. Now she must break free from his evil grasp before it is too late for her and Jean-Paul.
