Ice and Sex
"Mentor's Lair" is the middle book in the Zaddack trilogy. The first book ended with the heroine, Serall, forced to flee her home planet.
A rag-tag band of survivors, including humans, Riathans, and a Bioguard (one of Serall's relentless pursuers) must land their space vessel on a cold, forebidding planet in an attempt to forage food and water.
The planet holds two big surprises - a series of "earth"quakes which release irresistible sexual energy, and - the presence of a being, Mentor, older than time, who may be friend, or foe!
As previously, the author handles dialogue and action scenes equally well. Because of the sexual energy subplot, this book is definitely more adult oriented than the first.
An exciting read which leaves you anticipating the final volume, "Mindspark", due out this spring.

Messieurs les enfants : roman

Average review score:

A very good book, based on a somewhat good idea for a plot.
Basically, the book is described by the following sentence: the kids turn into their parents, and the parents turn into their kids.

The idea seemed farfetched and hardly interesting, but then you get to thinking of the numerous possibilities that one could develop this story idea. I already loved Pennac, so I read, and I very much appreciated.

It's not so much the fact that kids turn into adults and vice versa that makes it interesting, it's the characters themselves. They always having the perfectly witty reply, and the way they relate to one another is more than entertaining.

One of the children involved speaks regularly to his dead father, and the discussions - contrary to what we would believe - are quite funny and fetching.

Also, the school teacher, M. Castraing, is a man who lacked childhood experiences, and is living family life as a child through the eyes (and homework assignments) of his students. This teacher is a remarkably interesting character, and the idea of getting to know him (as well as why he teaches the way he does, and why he goes to prostitutes - no, it isn't for sex) is very exciting.

The book is suspenseful and a real page-turner, as long as you like the Pennac writing style, which is comparable to none other.

A very interesting read from beginning to end, and a setting and plot you won't soon forget.

basic yeast genetic technique lab-book
Planning to start working with budding yeast, or going to give a lab course on genetics? This is a good place to start. This lab book brings the most basic techniques in yeast genetics, including gene knockout, gene replacement, transformations, mutagenesis, some biochemical assays, preparation of media (and more). This book is well organised and helps to build the correct schedule for your experiments, including all the materials needed. Even for the more experts this might help as a quick reference book.

Insightful review of "The Mob"
Great, informative book. Shows good insight from a "non" connected man. Main character was close to the the boss, but also realized he had a family of his own. Good reading and not complicated to read at all.

Moll Flanders
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (August, 1989)
Author: Daniel Defoe
Amazon base price: $2.95
Used price: $0.48

Average review score:

Daniel Defoe at his best.
Robinson Crusoe has always been Dafoe best known work but in my opinion Moll Flanders is far superior piece of literature. We follow Moll throughout her life of poverty, five marriages, live in crime and at last she finds lasting happiness or contentment. That, of course, is brought about her repentance for the "wicked" life she had led. The novel is written in a format that Moll tells her story in the first person to the audiance of a journalist. If this was a movie the format would be best described as a "Mocumentary". The language is at times difficult but for anyone who has read Shakespeare or other literature from that time it should not be an obstacle. If this story would be published today with contemperary caracters it would in all likelyhood be considered pulp fiction but Moll Flanders is anything but.

Monet: Or the Triumph of Impressionism

Well-written, no references, duplicates catalog raisonne
This is a beautifully illustrated review of Monet's life, by one of the major scholars of Monet. It suffers as a scholarly source, however, because there are no citations of where quotes or information was obtained. And buyers beware: this is a reprint of Vol I of the 4 volume catolog raisonne--so if you have that set, don't buy it!

Good device book for both process and design engineers
This book explains well about several MOSFET models for SPICE simulations with informative historical review. MOSFET model parameters is now essential for semiconductor chip design as a communication tool between process/device engineers and circuit designers. In this book, starting from compact description of MOSFET physics, several well-known models are described seperately. So beginners can read only what they need. In addition, reading throughout introduction and final comments of each chapters give us information on progress of MOSFET models. If possible, I want to have an additional chapter which compares several models from the viewpoints of physical modeling and robustness of circuit simulation. Anyway, I recommend this book both to process and design engineers as well as modeling engineers for effective development of future semiconductor chips.
