An Impressive Survey
This book is an impressive survey of recent research in the applications of Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces to complex analytic function theory, and, in particular to the study of functions which are analytic on the open unit disk in the complex plane.

This book is accessible to anybody who has mastered the essentials of complex function theory, banach space theory, and hilbert space theory which are found in Walter Rudin's book "Real and Complex Analysis". You don't need even the advanced topics in complex function theory in Rudin's book to understand Alpay's book. Hence, this book is excellent for graduate students who want to do research in this field.

If this book accomplished only that, it would be impressive enough, but it does much more.

At the same time that this book surveys current research (current as of 2000) in the applications of RKHS to complex function theory, this book surveys the applications of RKHS to mathematics as a whole! Very little is left out, and the reader is given short intuitive explanations of just how each application works. It is amazing how the references to a vast array of RKHS applications are salt and peppered throughout the first half of this book in a way which fits in completely naturally with the over-all flow of the argument. Professor Alpay makes it all so easy to grasp because of his clear and straightforward writing style. Of course, credit must be give to the translator Stephen Wilson in this regard too.

Professor Alpay's excellent bibliography is a little weak in the area of references to applications of RKHS to signal processing and to data mining. I would like to suggest three references which, when combined with Alpay's references, give an even more excellent bibliography.

First is the papers in "Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces: Applications to Statistical Signal Processing" and especialy the four papers by Kailath labelled "Parts I, II, III, and IV". This is available on Amazon.com.

Second is "Learning Kernel Classifiers" by Herbrich for the applications to data mining. This is also available on amazon.com.

Third is "Detection, Estimation, and Modulation Theory" by Harry Van Trees Part I, especially page 368 equation 434 and page 297. Van Trees' book is still the best for the nuts and bolts of the application of RKHS to signal processing as far as I know. For example, Professor Van Trees gives an excellent explanation of how the theory can be extended (almost beyond the breaking point) to handle the white noise case.

Combining Van Trees insight into the applications with Kailath's insight into the theory is a powerful combination. Herbrich shows how these powerful insights are being leveraged today in the field of data mining and especially in the field of support vector machines and their extensions to kernel based methods in general.

Thoroughly engaging stories that grip the attention
Produced and directed by Steven Ziplow and superbly performed by the Hilton Head Island Repertory Company, Sci-Fi Trilogy showcases three outstanding and original science fiction stories by Daniel Cline. General Emergency is a very funny look at a near future medical system and hospital bureaucracy that can only be described as chillingly possible and alarmingly believable! The Lost Planeteers finds the captain and crew of a colonization ship transporting a cargo of malcontents, misfits, and weirdos have an unexpected and thoroughly unpleasant surprise in store for themselves. Twin Engines is a descent into a series of misunderstandings in a factory making transport rocket shuttles that leads to a horrifying future that can happen to any of us! Sci-Fi Trilogy is a one cassette anthology that provides the listener with lively, futuristic, thoroughly engaging stories that grip the attention from beginning to end!

Science Fiction's Greatest Monsters

Cute little book
Although it's written for kids, adults can enjoy it, too. And there's lots of photos! Cohen goes through a quick survey of monsters in literature, film and radio. Some surprised me--it's not often anyone mentions "The Colussus of New York." There are
other books that are much more detailed, but they are much more expensive and much, much larger. This is a slim, easy-to-read
paperback, made to order for that youngster in your family you
might be showing some curiosity about monsters (and what normal
kid doesn't?)

The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine

Herbal Medicine
I've studied herbs for years, and have collected many books on the subject, but of them all, Mowreys' book The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine holds a pre-eminent place. Well written, intelligently and solidly researched, this book stands head over shoulders above the plethora of herbal books that derive their information mostly from folklore and anecdotal reports. Mowrey's book seperates the "wheat from the chaff". Highly recommended.

Development, Diversity, and Literacy-Toward Common Ground
The title caught my eye. "Scribble" and writing I understood, but scrabble just didn't fit. Then I read the first chapter. Daniel Meier has been a classroom teacher, teacher educator, and researcher and through his book Scribble scrabble- he has given me back the importance and pride of early literacy efforts. In this ethnographic study Meier presents detailed pictures of children from diverse backgrounds learning to make sense of literacy in a preschool setting. The stories he provides are formed from the very words of children and interpreted by a careful listener and an observer grounded in theory. Scribble Scrabble is important because its purpose is to find common ground between developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive literacy teaching. Meier then wants to communicate those findings to teachers, teachers-to-be, and others interested in understanding and improving the literate lives of children, teachers, and families in urban schools.

Amazing writing. The one woman piece is haunting and jarring. Blew me away that a man wrote the piece. Wild Abandon is sharp witted and quick, a very entertaining piece.

Graham's Poems, not Halpern's
Contrary to the editorial review above, this volume contains selected poems by W.S. Graham, and not by this Halpern character at all. It is an adequate selection of Sydney Graham's poetry, containing the full text of 'The Nightfishing", his key modernist poem, selections from the 'Letters' and all the best known later poems - 'Malcolm Mooney's Land', 'Clusters Travelling Outward', etc.

Nothing to do with Halpern, I promise.

The Senses of Humor: Self and Laughter in Modern America

Cultural Archeologist
Dr. Daniel Wickberg is an archeologist of culture. His exploration into the history of a "Sense of humor" is essential to anyone who has ever asked the question why? Skillfully crafted -but not out of reach for the average reader- this book reads like he is sitting there talking with you. It flows very smoothly. And lets face it, not only was it an interesting read but I damn near pissed my pants with some of the things he has uncovered. If you are interested in what makes us who we are as a people this books for you. Hell, if your interested in a good read this books for you!
