I enjoyed this book
If the composers read this book, they'd be rolling over in their graves (especially Arvo Part because his not dead) This is a very funny book for those who love the music or want a comic look at the history of these fine composers. The drawings look like they came out of Mad magazine or someone who is just mad.(Ive heard that I could do better) Pick up this book music lovers and just have some fun.

Review of The Composers: A History of Musi
This book was funny, well written and the artwork was great. The author's knowledge of music is evident and what a wonderful sense of humour. I also enjoyed this author's last book "The Hystery of Art" and I hope there will be another book to follow.

A Brief Overview and Introduction
Dan Cohn-Sherbok's JUDIASM: RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD offers the student of comparative religion and/or Judaism a brief overview of crucial themes in Judaic belief and practice. The work consists of approximately 100 pages of text, followed by a glossary and pronunciation guide (both of which should be enormously helpful to novices). The book's strengths include the following: a) readers are given a strong introduction to Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and Humanistic Judaism; and b) a chapter on contemporary observance takes the reader through religious practices. I would submit that the book would be even more helpful had it offered a more extensive discussion of historical Judaism and textual exegesis. However, the author did not seek to write a comprehensive history; that which is presented is solid, well-written, and student-friendly.

Very interesting reading on the search for truth!
Reading this book gives one the delightful sense of seeing a kaleidoscope in action or of seeing fractals unfold. In describing how truth is sought in letters, words, and texts, and how symbolism is applied and sought and re-applied, one starts to sense the joy and sheer intensity with which scholars probe the Torah for divine direction as well as hints about the nature of reality. These are material and insights I just would not have seen otherwise.

Instructions are clear, combinations inventive and tasty.
I have only prepared one dish that fell short of genius (winter vegetables - despite the selection of vegetables, a little bland). His desserts (the blueberry brioche brings restaurant quality into your kitchen) are wonderfully inventive. Photos accompany many of the recipes and each food section contains an index of dishes to follow. This is the first book I turn to when I am in the mood for a challenge that I know I can complete.

Better Service than the Restaurant
Although there are a few dishes at Daniel's which I wish were present in this book, this book contains recipes which are highly enjoyable both to make as well as to consume.

The recipes can be complicated at time, but they are well-depicted. The reader need not consult other cooking manuals for an explanation of ingredients or techniques or processes. The dishes, if well-followed, produce delectable results, even if the undertaking was somewhat grand. Though the binding of my copy of the book has fallen apart though excessive use, it is probably the only component of the book about whose quality I have doubts.

I was ready to leave the professional altogether when I stumbled across this book. It really cut down on the amount of time I spent filling out forms and fighting with case managers. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Excellent Resource Tool
This book is an excellent resource tool that therapists can utilize in the treatment planning process. I would highly recommend it to any professional who is challenged to meet the demands of managed care in today's workplace.

Ahead of its time
Dan Wile's book is one of the few really good books written about couples therapy. He offers thoughtful, cogent critiques of pre-existing models, (what he refers to as) depth analytic, behavioral, and systems frameworks. As the book was written in the early '80s, these critiques are somewhat dated, especially those referring to systems theory. A lot has developed in the last 20 years in the realm of systemic therapy, moving it more in the direction of collaboration then in the past. What impressed me about Wile's work was how ahead of time he was in presenting a collaborative model. What I find somewhat off-putting is his use of the term ego-analytic to describe what he does. On the whole, I think what he does is to carefully and respectfully unpack the experience of each member of the couple and help to shift them from stuck, adversarial or avoidant positions, into one of joint, collaborative interest in the betterment of their relationship. In many ways he predates narrative therapy and the work of Anderson/Goolishian. I found the book immediately useful and plan to use it in my teaching at the medical center.

Perhaps the finest book on couple's therapy.
According to John Gottman, the prominent researcher and writer on couple's therapy, Dan Wile is "a genuis and the greatest living marital therapist." This classic book on couple's therapy, critiques each of the popular approaches to couple's therapy, then takes the best from each without losing depth. Indeed, he suggests an approach to working with couple's which takes the therapist out of the adversarial stance and into the position of ally, thus, enhancing the process. His writing is lucid and thoughtful, with lots of examples. I have recommended this book to countless graduate students and experienced therapists... all have found it to be brilliant, some going so far as to say it altered their entire approach to couple's work. A must read for marital and couple's therapist of any theoretical orientation. As a professor and therapist myself, I recommend this book highly.

Fascinating
For most of us, our knowledge of Daniel Boone begins and ends with Fess Parker's t.v. shows in the 1960's. Allan Eckert's book, The Court Martial of Daniel Boone, is based on actual facts, but is written in a captivating novel style. I found the book to be fascinating. In modern times Daniel Boone is thought of as a frontier hero. In his day, however, there were many people who were suspicious and resentful of him. Boone's court martial is an example of how an honest man, doing the right thing, can be "bushwacked" by not-so-honest rivals. If you like true stories about American frontiersmen, this book is for you.

Excellent Account of the Little-Known Trial of Daniel Boone
This is Allan Eckert's novelization of the little-known incident of the military court-martial of that famous Kentucky frontiersman, Daniel Boone. Boone was a legend in his own time, a well respected hunter and frontier soldier and was said to be as able in the woods as any Indian.

In February 1778, Boone has been leading a party of 27 men from Fort Boonesboro who were captured by Shawnee Indians while making salt at the Blue Licks. Boone was adopted into the tribe and given the Shawnee name Sheltowee (Big Turtle) and spent several months living and hunting among the Indians before finally escaping back to Booneboro just in time to help fend off a siege of the isolated fort by the British and Indians. After the battle, Boone was accused of treason and complicity with the enemy by several of his enemies, especially Col. John Bowman, who served as prosecutor in the court martial proceedings against him. Boone shows that he can be as sly and sharp in the courtroom as he is in the wilderness.

Most people know only the myths and legends about Daniel Boone and this book does a great service by providing insight into the reality of the man, as well as presenting an intersting and riveting true story.

A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Daniel (International Critical Commentary Series)
Published in Hardcover by T&t Clark Ltd (December, 2000)
Author: James A. Montgomery

Used price: $55.00

Dated but valuable
Why should you buy a Bible commentary written in the 1920s, especially when so many have been written since? I would not suggest that this should be the only commentary on Daniel that you buy. If you want only one at this level of technicality, I suggest the one by J J Collins; it is far more recent and easier to read. However, I recommend that you get this one as well, because Montgomery was a master of his craft. His discussion of the Greek versions of Daniel, for example, has not yet been superseded and is still well worth studying. Have both on your bookshelf, and you will know nearly everything that is worth knowing about the Book of Daniel.

Justly Famed Commentary
This is possibly the most often quoted of all commentaries on the Book of Daniel.

It's scholarly to the point of being intimidating. Montgomery usually leaves quotations from Latin, Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew, German, and French untranslated. He uses abbreviations to cram 1000 pages of material into 500 pages.

Other commentaries from early in this century are getting hard to find (e.g., Driver, Boutflower, and C. H. H. Wright.) So you should buy this before it goes out of print.

I liked Montgomery's survey of the modern resurgence of literary criticism of Daniel. He sees Bertholdt's German commentary (1806) as the modern return to Porphyry's 3rd century criticisms of Daniel.

The book has wonderfully detailed histories of interpretations for controversial passages in Daniel. They are hard reading because of the abbreviations and untranslated quotations.

Great cross-sectional anatomy book for medical professionals
This cross-sectional anatomy book provides a complete and precise look into the anatomic structures seen in the cross-sectional plane. With the use of cadaver sections, illustrations and corresponding diagnostic images the anatomy is displayed with great detail. Also included are explanations and descriptions which enhance the knowledge of the human body and its functions. As an instructor in Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging, I would HIGHLY recommend this book for those wishing to expand their "anatomical knowledge". The sophistication of this book would be ideal even for the most advanced learner in human anatomy.

High Quality Imaging
It was Wednesday, 1pm and I found myself in the paediatric X-ray meeting staring at an abdominal CT scan desperately attempting to relate the collection of black, white and grey shapes to the anatomy I had studied in the dissecting room over a year ago in anticipation of the questioning which was undoubtedly to follow. Cross Sectional Human Anatomy from Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins sets out to enable basic anatomy to be related easily to the cross sectional imaging commonly encountered within clinical settings. It uses the best imaging from the visible human project to present anatomy in a regional format with a chapter devoted to each region. Each chapter begins with a short description of the most important structures found within that region. Individual chapters contain numerous sections at different levels. Each level is given a double page spread, that contains a labelled cryosection with a diagram and short description to aid interpretation and most importantly a corresponding CT and or MR image. In addition, some diagnostic imaging using other methods (plain radiograph or ultrasound) is provided. All of the imaging is of high quality and web links to where the original visible human data can be viewed are provided. This is a useful book, that achieves what it sets out to do, filling the gap between the traditional anatomy book and the imaging atlas. This is a reasonably priced addition to the bookshelf for rapid review of the anatomy learnt in the pre clinical setting within a clinical context.
