Read and Keep this one on your nightstand
This is a must have book for you and all of your friends. Joni Daniels shows us clearly that we have the tools to get what we want from our work, families, relationships, and life we just need to "put on the safety goggles" (i.e. have a clear vision) first. The stories she tells have universal appeal -- you'll recognize yourself and your close girlfriends. Just spending 15 minutes at night reading this book was a great way to get a charge to my batteries, get me planning my next career move. This book is the kind that you don't want to lend. I find myself buying additional copies to give to friends.

A Book for all women of the 21st century
Power Tools for Women is one of those books you want all your friends and collegues to read, only you can not bear to lend your copy!. This book is a must for all women. We are in a position of transition, trying to balance home life and career, being wives, mothers, bosses, role models, and somewhere in there trying to maintain our sense of self. Joni Daniels has captured our issues and given us a wonderful resouce on how to work with them. Her wit and writing style coupled with her examples of real people situations make it such an easy read.
I am buying this book as gifts for all the women in my life, and I know they will love me for it!!

Power Tools for Women is a fantastic resource!
I just finished reading Joni Daniels new book- "Power Tools for Women" and I had to write this review. I have never done this before but I wanted to let other women know how essential this book is to help all of us understand how to change our lives and have more personal and professional satisfaction. We do have the power and the tools to be successful, to be who we want to be--deserve to be and not what our society, corporations, families, teachers, etc. peg us to be.

The methaphor of power tools makes it easy to understand and apply the advice in this book and I related to many of the examples Ms. Daniels used. I have worked in a "man's world" for over 30 years moving from secretary to vice president in a billion dollar company. You don't get there simply because you are good technically. The secret to how you get what you want is in this Power Toolbox. Read this book and level the field!!!

The Prophecies
Published in Paperback by Haas Publications (31 December, 2002)
Author: Daniel Clay
Amazon base price: $16.95
Used price: $11.87
Average review score:

Brilliant! A must-read book!
Daniel Clay sees himself as a lighthouse, illuminating for us the proper way. His immensely readable book, The Prophecies, are the visions he sees for us, our country, our planet and our world. The messages came to him while in a meditative state and offer scenarios if we listen...and if we do not!

The Prophecies addresses many vital subjects...from technology to health to finances to natural resources. Most of all, though, Daniel Clay speaks to the situations that affect everyone of us in a most personal way. Like child-raising, terrorism, peace and even politics. For instance, he forecasts the end of communism everywhere; the oncoming prosperity of Asia; and the coming obsolescence of money, "Gold and silver will be without value, diamonds but decoration".

This reviewer found this quotation most interesting, "And that there will come into this global economic environment an individual of goodwill and piety. He shall be the Pope of the Holy Roman Catholic Church". Further, Pope Sixtus shall reform the church...and this man will bring peace until "...another spirit shall enter the body...the spirit of evil incarnate...and the end will be near".

Daniel Clay is a man of humility and integrity. His words should be heeded because he may be the spiritual teacher we've been expecting. The Prophecies is one of the most interesting and provocative books published. In this reviewer's opinion, Daniel Clay is a prophet of great magnitude and his words can lift our consciousness dramatically!

A unique, new way of viewing current & future events.
Clay, in contrast to the traditional Nostradomus prediction tradition, presents such clear, precise predictions. These are truly warnings about what might happen. I did not expect the alternative to also be given. The Power is in the Positive. The alternative is also given in detail. For the first time, I was given a clear picture to strive toward, to pray for. Keeping, holding the image, the thought of what MIGHT, of what could be is more attractive, and effective than the dire warnings, that have become almost commonplace as to loose their once effectiveness. That only serve to enhance the hopelessness that is epedimic.

Amazingly insightful!
Whether or not Daniel Clay's "Prophecies" are divinely inspired revelations or merely the products of a deeply spiritual and insightful mind is almost beside the point as one begins to read this truly astonishing work. While the reader's first temptation is to skim the text searching for validations of predicted events that have already come to pass--and there are more than a few absolute stunners, like the present situation in the Balkans and the recent rash of school shootings in the U.S.--more careful reading yields greater rewards. Because Daniel Clay has an uncanny ability to peel away the layers of the most complex sociological and political issues of our time to expose basic truths that are at once so obviously simple and yet so profound they take your breath away. Those deep and undisputable insights, in turn, force one to give serious credence to the author's dire and very specific predictions of mankind's possible future in a new millenium devoid of individual expression and shadowed by the politics of pure Evil. Though you may agree or disagree with "Prophecies," I confidently predict you won't be able to put it down.

Text for Honors Introductory Psychology
I've used the text for my honors section of Psych 101 and as a source for lecture material in my other sections. IMHO, this the the best textbook for Intro Psych that I have ever come across in terms of the depth of material presented. It is, however, probably too difficult for the large lecture hall sections or sections taught entirely by graduate students. For these sections I would recommend David Myers' textbook. Much more student-friendly, and still an excellent source of information. Fridlund, et al., is still the gold standard.

Outstanding, comprehensive "intro." book.
This introduction text represents a "tour de force" in dealing with a complex subject. Psychology is divided into 5 sections dealing with Action, Cognition, Social Behavior, Development, and Individual Differences. Each chapter contains the biological basis at work, because, as the authors so beautifully put it "we aren't just minds; we are minds embodied."

This book is for the serious student; the dabbler, and those whose understanding of psychology is limited to pop psych-type self-help, psycho-babble will be bored.

An outstanding, scholarly work worthy of reading.

the human's user manual
everyone should have a copy.

it's incredible that after all these centuries of learning, educating and supposedly progressing that the most basic aspects of our own behaviour aren't taught in some core subject.

you buy a computer, you get a manual. people think they're so smart and yet most of them don't even know what cognitive dissonance is.

The raft is not the shore : conversations toward a Buddhist/Christian awareness
Published in Unknown Binding by Beacon Press ()
Author: Daniel Berrigan
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

And The Shore Is Not In The Gulf
The Raft Is Not the Shore is a profound and inspired exchange between a gentle Buddhist monk and teacher from Vietnam Nhat Hanh and a Christian dissident Daniel Berrigan, originally published in the 1970s, but, sadly in many ways, striking in its relevance to the current international crisis in the Middle East. Unlike a mere theological conference, where matters revolve around "conceptual" issues, pedantic scripture exegesis and other superficial attributes of "knowing the way," Nhat Hanh and Berrigan's dialogue is a true sharing of religious experiences and personal insights that invites the reader to "be on the way". Akin to the saints whose greatness both admire, their own lives serve as a moving example of containing the Good in the very movement to it.

Revolving around many of the issues related to the Vietnam War and how it affected religious life in both Vietnam and America, the book focuses on such eternal dilemmas as the meaning of life and death, retaining wholeness in the face of living in modern society, and the role of a religious person in the world, as well as discusses resistance to violence, dogma and conformity. It offers a unique exchange of perspectives on suffering and spiritual life, which, in the true spirit of ecumenism, affirm that faith is ultimately in the heart and that peaceful meditation and listening to each others' stories of suffering is a viable alternative to national strife and terrorism.

Both authors believe that no doctrine, whether religious or philosophical, should be treated as the absolute truth, but rather serve only as a guiding means for developing awareness, tranquility and opening one's heart to others. They see organized religion as an institution parallel to society and oftentimes as bankrupt, complacent and antihuman as to make an individual's true spiritual quest by necessity one of perpetual resistance. Since both Nhat Hahn and Berrigan attempted mediating between Israelis and Palestinians without taking sides, they bring a freshly unbiased and much needed perspective on how to prevent the nation states from "protecting" the well-being of their citizens through sacrificing the lives of these very citizens. The book is full of memorable stories from the Diamond, Lotus and Heart Sutras, the Bible, contemporary life of Vietnamese monks and nuns, and religious communities of resistance in the United States. One of them relates the curious rites to which the Le Dynasty emperors in Vietnam were bound in times of major national disasters: since it was believed that emperors caused calamities by not having pure enough hearts, they were expected to confess their sins publicly, eat vegetarian meals and sleep on a mat for a while, to atone for their misguided leadership. Would it be a gross misunderestimation not to expect the same from a Texas rancher?

Prescient
Written over 25 years ago, this book is so fresh it's scary. Their discussion of the situation in the middle east offers a much needed window on the spiritual dimensions of the problem of believing that violence ever ultimately solves anything. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking spiritual guidance and salve during this difficult time after the World Trade Center attack. Nhat Hahn is very task oriented, Berrigan very heart oriented, a great mix. It is a true ecumenical dialog, which enlightens.

Two gifted masters and friends
Thich Nhat Hanh and Daniel Berrigan, S. J. are longtime friends and soulmates. These conversations , taped in paris in the 1970's,show the depth and breath of their friendship and spirituality. After 26 years these conversations are still fresh,if not vital[vital is totally subjective].The Buddhist -Christian dialogue was not started by these men, though it was taken to a new level by these poets. Unlike many of these books, there is no need by either man to explain away their beliefs nor make it so palatable to the other that all of the original tang is lost. This is more like two poets speaking at a cafe{which it was,in part} talking about their lives, and the forces and times in which they live. Since I view these two men to be two of the best spiritual guides alive, this book is important and interesting and much much LIGHTER than the titile would suggest{.Also, of similar intetest,THE GETHSEMANI ENCOUNTER.} Excellent book by two giants

Free Church and Other "Evangelicals" Read this book, please!
Williams says evangelicalism is suffering from amnesia about "how little the church's future is being informed by the Christian past."

Evangelicals in the Free Church tradition suffer from a very negative view of church history and the "Foundational Tradition of the early church."

The author, an ordained Baptist minister, believes that if the Free Churches don't rediscover that Tradition, they'll become more sectarian and become more and more susceptible to accomodation to the surrounding culture. From my observations, I believe Williams is correct.

I don't mean to sound cynical, but I'm very skeptical of Free Church/evangelicals responding to Williams' message. (I hope they'll prove me wrong!) So many of them seem to believe Christianity began when they asked Jesus into their lives, not 2,000 years ago.

Williams builds a strong case for his convictions. He believes it's the key to the church's renewal.

A corrective to the myopia prevalent in Protestantism today
At the suggestion of a professor of Patristics after taking his class on Early Christian Thought, this was a tremendous eye-opener to the danger of forsaking the wellspring of rich legacy found in the Early Church and in Christian history in general. D.H. Williams writes primarily to "Suspicious Protestants," i.e. those leery of tradition and its (oft-thought) destructive influence upon authentic Christianity. On the contrary, Williams argues, Tradition (capital "T" -- thus not the man-made jots and tittles of deadening religion but the Heritage of Orthodoxy bequeethed to us from the Ancient Church) is just the necessary component to direct our way aright in the pluralistic/subjectivist mileiu in which we find ourselves. As Henri de Lubac has correctly noted: "Every time a Christian renewal has blossomed in our West, whether in thought or in life... it has blossomed under the sign of the Fathers."

Buy this book!! You won't regret it!

Exellent work
This is an exellent work. The Church (especially the evangelical ones) need a look at the ancient faith to face the future. Williams shows you the great treasure of redescovering the tradition of the early church. Refreshing!

Superior and inspirational reading for adults and teens
After reading Glyn Williams' trenchant 'The Prize Of All The Oceans' I had an overwhelming desire to read this classic once again. I first read it when I was a mere 10 year old and it completely mesmerized me; I find that it still held the same power over me thirty years later. It is difficult to put this tale down once the title character becomes a castaway on the "island of despair" (as Crusoe refers to it) and he begins the battle against the odds to survive. Facing extreme tropical heat, torrential storms, a dreadful loneliness and the struggle to master some of the simplest of skills we take for granted Crusoe wages his one-man crusade for survival. Beginning his desolate existence steeped in woeful self-pity he slowly realizes through a series of trying circumstances, devotional reading of the Bible and finally relief from his isolated state that the experience proves to be one of reverie. In the process Crusoe becomes quite possibly the most inspirational figure to spring forth from the pages of literature.

Though it is annually listed by literature scholars as one of the 100 finest works of fiction, today primarily adolescents read Defoe's enduring tale as part of their required reading for school; very few others rarely bother with this nearly three century old tale. 'Robinson Crusoe' it seems is a classic awaiting a renaissance of rediscovery by adults who regularly read for either leisure or as a part of continuing education. While the novel's approach to morality may seem a bit old fashioned by today's contemporary standards, the character's awakening to wisdom, inner strength and faith will inspire any reader of any age. Crusoe's ability to steel himself against the onslaught of natural elements, his own self doubts and finally a band of savages who discover his "island empire" should win over even the most jaded of us. This Norton Critical Edition is the perfect package to gain a deep appreciation for this masterpiece of the English language. So do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book today and transport yourself back to your youth and also to a time long past. It's a journey you won't regret taking.

An underrrated masterpiece
Unfortunately, this book suffered the fate of many other masterpieces: be classified in the "children" bookshelf. That guarantees most editions will be abridged, censored, and forgotten, since kids today read very little and waste their time playing with horrendous japanese toys. Enough lecturing. This is a book about a man who, yes, goes through many adventures, and in the way finds himself. This is not the story of a man who goes through pleasant experiences, enjoying adventure. He suffers very much finding himself alone for many years, having to survive by himself in the midst of a desert island. The book is narrated in the first person, so it's a long monologue by a truly lonely man. His reflections are deep and moving. It's good that this is a complete and unabridged edition, since the first part is usually severed from the rest, which is a pity because it puts the whole story in context. This is a fun but also an interesting reading.

Redemption!
This is a simple, beautifully written story of a young man who rejects the advice of his father and pursues a life at sea. His fate, of course, is to dwell alone for many years on an isolated island. The main point, however, is his slow realization that, in finding God and religion, his "cup is not half empty but half full". This is NOT a childs book and should be read by those in their 30's and above...otherwise the message may be lost on youth.

A must-have for surgery residents
This book will be extremely valuable to any general surgery resident--it addresses a wide range of general surgery and surgical subspecialty topics, contains hundreds of multiple choice questions, and provides need-to-know information with clear explanations. I recommend it as the primary source for in-training review and board exam review.

*Underground Vampires*
A Horror readers treat, I loved this tale of quenching horror. A terrific nonstop, diary of a city filled with thirsty vampires, and a woman accepting her own mutation. The writing is tight and satisfying, and definitely worth another read.

A Chilling Read........
The story is as compelling as any 'Anne Rice' novel, and should not be missed. Cause: unexpected violence that encases these pages, and strobes the mind with lightning, it blinds the reader's thoughts. Effect: another page turner. A great success for a first attempt in battling the pro-writing world.

A Conventionnal Twist
Rutherford & Sanders put a new twist on the conventional view of vampires. With a surprise at every paragraph, Relative Blood is sure to spark the imagination of its readers. With its use of sophisticated language and passionately detailed and defined images, Rutherford & Sanders MUST be put among the ranks of Anne Rice and Bram Stoker. With each storyline flowing into the next, it's hard to consider that it was co-written. The graphic images throughout the novel illustrate the story, while still letting the reader imagine their own idea of what the city and people appear to be like. The book ends, but not the story, which leads me to wonder when the sequel will be coming out.

a restless review
This book had some very interesting folklore from various countries. Personally I liked the stories, although they are somewhat for younger readers. If anybody can gather goulish stories from the other side Daniel Cohen is certainly the man.

You need to read this!!!!
The Restless Dead is a very suspenseful and interesting book and I recommend it to people who like to stay up late and tell ghost stories. It's not just one tale, so if you don't like certain types of stories you have a selection. One of the best stories was " The Stolen Liver." Another detail about this book is that if you have a weak stomach don't read a few of these stories, belive me they'll make you sick.

Deadly exciting tales
I highly recommend this book to readers that love trilling ghost tales,I read it over and over and never get tired of it! It makes you want to finish the book as soon as you start it! I've read other ghost novels by this author but none as thrilling as these tales of horror!
