Anything Else Might Be Feckless
I would recommend any book which has a chapter on the comedians of the ascetic ideal. I believe that chapter 6 of this book presents the fullest treatment which Professor Daniel W. Conway has been able to publish on this topic. The section on "Knowledge: A Form of Asceticism" compares Nietzsche's use of the ideal to "a feedback loop invested with residual, and potentially productive, powers of self-denial." (p. 111) Of course this is a difficult book, as Conway pursues the idea to the point where the risk run by Nietzsche, "for example, nearly killed him . . . and it may ultimately have hastened his departure from sanity." (p. 118) This book should appeal to anyone whose political views have the same tendency, or whose views may have failed completely. Any failure which has been repeated so often that it has become funny ought to be compared to the contents of this book.

When the phone rings, evil awaits...
Daniel Ransom (Ed Gorman) has crafted a tale of terror in a mere 300 pages that works with Night Caller. Ransom's story starts off strong with a mother daughter combination escaping from their family problems by taking a long deserved road trip. On the trip the car breaks down outside the small town of Haversham and it's Haversham that would be the real setting of the story.
This is one of those horror novels from the 80s that is an extremely fast read. The font is huge in Zebra's edition and Ransom's writing is fairly simplistic so as to drive the story home. That is not to say it is without it's creepy moments. What Ransom has really written here is a combination slasher ghost story that could have been developed further. It almost feels like a campy slasher movie of the 80s ala the Prowler or Terror Train. The writing while not super detailed works for the story even though there are some proofreading errors in this edition.
Keep in mind this is a Zebra horror and enjoy it for what it is. A nice quick easy horror tale that is a good afternoon's read and will leave you hungry for more horror!

A striking, passionate collection of poems.
For her second collection of poems, Kate Daniels drew upon personal experience and Greek myth. Writing about the drowning of a friend's son, she used the myth of Niobe as a leaping-off point for the imagination. In the book's conclusion, Daniels changes the myth to provide both her contemporary heroine and Niobe a redemption they deserve, and that we, the readers, need. Loss, motherhood, grief--these are popular themes in poetry, but it's a tribute to Daniels that she uses them in new and interesting ways.

Is it theatre?
This play brings up a number of issues of media control of public opinion in North America. It's good to see examples of Canadian, not just U.S terrorisim in international development. But is it theatre? The format says no, but what is theatre? If theatre is artistic expression outside of corporate sponsored media then yes. Contraversial in more then one way, the authors say a lot of things that they would not get away with on T.V or radio making the stage a new forum for expression. It is easy to read and makes you think (shame on Brooks and Verdecchia).

An good survey of interdisciplinary nature of chaos
This book is a collection of invited papers presented at a workshop held at the Fields Institute in 1995. This book represents a good sample of papers from diverse disciplines and will surely reveal the important lessons and spirit from the very successful workshop. Happy reading and enjoy the beauty of nonlinearity.
The Nonprofit Handbook, Fund Raising, January 2000 Supplement, 2nd Edition
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (06 January, 2000)
Amazon base price: $72.00
Average review score:
It isn't just a book; it's a fund raising curriculum . . . .
One of the most experienced and respected fund-raising professionals in the United States, James M. Greenfield, ACFRE, FAHP, has assembled the best wisdom 42 other highly-regarded and experienced fund-raising leaders, into a comprehensive handbook covering nearly every conceivable aspect of fund development. The Nonprofit Handbook: Fund Raising isn't just a book; it's a fund raising curriculum between two covers. Indeed, I am unaware of any other volume which attempts -- and successfully so, I might add -- to map the entire scope of fund raising so thoroughly. A warning, though: It would be a monumental task to read this book in its entirety. Rather, its best use is as a fund raising reference - a one-volume library for articles covering just about any topic fund development professionals are likely to encounter. For example, folks who are involved with an annual fund will want to focus on Part III, entitled "Annual Giving Program." The section contains articles on "Overview of Annual Giving," "Direct Mail," "Benefit Event Fundamentals," "Benefit Event Enhancements," Telemarketing," and "Volunteer-Led Solicitations." To take another example, folks looking for major donors will turn to Part IV, entitled "Major Giving Programs," containing thorough treatments on these topics: "Overview of Major Giving," "The Corporate Support Marketplace," "The Grant-Seeking Process," "Major Gifts from Individuals," "Capital Fund Appeals," "Planned giving: Gift Vehicles," and "Planned Giving: Management and Marketing." One drawback is its price. At $210, it's one of the pricier books in fund raising. However, this is a two-volume set. I've described only the "Fund Raising" volume; there is also Management volume, covering -- again, in encyclopedic fashion -- all aspects of nonprofit management. We'll be reviewing that in the next installment of "We Review." Despite the price of the set, I cannot imagine any well-equipped fund development department not having these volumes available to the staff.

This is a real treasure of information. We managed to use it all. The recommended accomodation section we used in Seattle, a vineyard tour in Beaverton, Oregon, to booking a Tee time in Redmond. The Recommended Dining section although limited we used twice. Our compliments.

With long careers in the Nevada National Guard and the Bureau of Land Management, Colonel Rathburn demonstrates clearly his familiarity with Nevada and its military history. His book is a valuable contribution to the history of the American West.
