This book is written in plain english and is brutally honest. You WILL learn how to cope with the situation you are in and how to get so much more from your relationship with your children. You may be missing the most important advice of your life if you don't read this book, now!

The main charm of "Algernon, Charlie and I" is the revealed episodes behind "Flowers for Algernon", which make you understand (at least partly) why "Flowers's for Algernon", the author's acclaimed novel, is so increadibly compelling and moving - because it is not a pure fantasy, but because it is based on so much truth about us human being, our emotions and feelings, that the author had been observing and experiencing himself. You will find out that "Flowers for Algernon" is not about this poor guy who gone through extraordinary experience, but about all of us.

Mr. Keyes exposes himself personally in this intimate autobiography. I was captured by his honesty, his sensitivity and his fluid writing style. I felt, as though I was a familiar friend and I gained and enormous appreciation for his dedication in writing "Flowers for Algernon". I look forward to more books by this gifted author. I hear his next will be science fiction / mystery.

This book is fabulous! I use computers and the web a lot and there are PLENTY of things in this book I find useful. And the price is right: perfect to bring instead of a stupid bottle of wine when you're invited to someone's home for dinner! The recipients of Ask Mr. Modem have been tickled at this gift! Also a perfect holiday gift for someone who I know not that well but wanted to give something. I'm here ordering my fifth copy of the book!

I received a copy of "Ask Mr. Modem!" this past Christmas and it's the best computer book I've ever received (or purchased). I have a shelf of computer books, most of which I can't understand. This book, which is in question and answer format, is very easy to read. Just thumbing through it and seeing all the questions Mr. Modem answers, these are the same questions I've had. It's been a huge help to me and I've already given several copies of it to friends.

Catherine M. The book centers around Animal Ark hospital. The main characters are an elementary school girl and boy. They find a baby badger without a mother and raise him in the basement of the Animal Ark hospital. Together they solve the mystery of who is killing the badgers in their wild habitat.

I recommend this book to someone who likes mysteries and cares about wild animals. It is a good book for both boys and girls.

Mandy and James rescue a baby badger when they find it has been separated from it's mother. They then find out that there are a group of people in Welford hunting badgers. Mandy and James have to catch the badger hunters before they set the baby badger free into the wild or he could get hurt.

This is one of the best Animal Ark books and a must read for all animal lovers.

an angrey mr.bonser shows up with a dog claiming its his but has no name, the dog is in very bad shape and half starved. soon after, the wellford wild lifers went to a badger set in pipers wood to find the badgers were gone! when james tells mandy about what happend mandy says "show me where the set is" james has no clue why. when they get to that set in pipers wood they find raged old tire tracks and an orfend badger cub thinking the set has been dug along with the fact they found raged old tire tracks. the next day mandy and james make plaster casts of the tire tracks. when mr.bonser cheks on the dog siman the nurse gets casts of mr.bonsers tire tracks. the qustein was: is it going to match or no?

There is certainly no shortage of books about reading. Perhaps it's inevitable in this self-referential era, that we end up reading about reading. Most of these works, however, fail to express the joy that their authors feel on reading great works.

Pennac's book succeeds where many fail because it is entirely devoid of sanctimony. His thoughts on reading are presented as an answer to the question "How do we get a child to love reading." His thoughts are clear, well-reasoned, and passionately held, in a way that makes the reader think, "Me, too!"

If you love reading and want to pass on the feeling, this is a great book for a starter.

To those who know Daniel Pennac, it's only fitting ! He's the best contemporary french novelist. And "better than life" is another great great book, highly funny and witty... and also highly moving. To those who love genius, cleverness and emotion... this book is for you !!!

Thank goodness this book has been reprinted. My copy of the original, then entitled 'Reads Like a Novel', has been through so many pairs of hands that it's falling apart. But I suppose that would be a suitable state for a book that's all about the gift of reading. And re-reading. Which is fortunate, because this is very much a book to return to with relish.

I'm usually jaded enough not to use the word 'inspiring', but this book is inspiring in the most benign and down-to-earth way. Amazon should show its legendary business sense and give a copy of this book away with every order. 'Better Than Life' so ignites, or re-ignites, the thirst for the printed word that every copy read would account for ten more novels bought.

Not least of the book's strengths is its ability to speak to all audiences, to the experienced or to the child, and hold them spellbound with stories from the past, stories about stories, and stories about how we use and absorb stories. But it's a remarkably tolerant book, more about curiosoty than commentary, written with flair, simplicity and a contagious good spirit.

The original title was far more suitable because, aside from everything else, the book also does 'read like a novel'. It's funny too. I haven't gone into the specifics of the book because I wouldn't want to spoil the effects of its charm, but I can't recommended it enough; I've foisted this book on friends and now I'm trying to do the same to strangers.

This is Father Ciszek's odyssey from class bully to rough- hewn, intrepid minister inside and out of the best accommodations the Soviet Union had to offer for their political prisoners: the best KGB interrogators, the best watered-down soup, the best concrete bunks, the best mix of sociopathic criminals mixed in with the prisoners of conscience, the best conditions guaranteed to reduce the expense of maintaining an extensive number of prisoners who, however inadvertantly, irritated the authorities.

There are few spiritual insights--this isn't a letter from Saint Paul, nor Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn--but his experiences speak for themselves. Fr. Ciszek endured the rigors of intense interrogations followed by five years of imprisonment in cells, both isolated and crowded, within Moscow. He endured another ten years in worker camps inside the Arctic Circle.

In spite of the hardships, he managed to minister to a captive audience supplied by the Russian authorities. He heard confessions and said Mass with provisions supplied by the prisoners themselves, such as fermented raisins for sacramental wine, and a paten made of nickel.

There were some minor disappointments. He had his picture snapped at Lenin's tomb days before he was airlifted from the national prison Lenin founded. For all the suffering he endured out of love for the people of the Soviet Union, I overlooked his touristy affectation. Besides, he DOES offer a prayer for Lenin's soul: "He was a man, after all, . . . and he may be in need of more prayers than he's getting here."

Also, I would have appreciated a few pages relating how he readjusted to life back home.

This memoir should sit next to other prison crucibles, such as "The Gulag Archipilago by Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn, "When Hell Was In Session" by Jeremiah Denton and "Against All Hope" by Armando Valladares.

Born in Pennsylvania and growing up as a tough guy on the street, Father Ciszek surely blundered into one of the toughest ministries ever. He had the worst case of historical myopia this reviewer has ever seen, but such a trait may have been required to lead him to his prison ministry. He gets a fixed idea that he must minister in Russia. In seminary in Poland when the Russians overrun it, he decides on his own to enter Russia, obtaining reluctant approval at the last minute. When does he enter? You guessed it - after the Germans invade Russia. He picks a Polish pseudonym and heads for the front! Naturally, the NKVD arrests him for espionage, but after thorough investigation are totally stymied by the good father. They offer him a ministry at the front, but he turns it down, at a time when 40 million people are dying and the Russians are fighting for the right to exist at all. So, he goes to the camps. There he keeps the flicker of faith alive among the hopeless. Miraculously, at the end of his working ministry, he gets to be repatriated and retire in the U.S.

I read this book back in 1987 while a patient in a local Veteran's Hospital. A priest had stopped in to visit and offered it to me for something to pass the time. It was one of those books that once you started to read it, you couldn't put it down. I read the book in a week, and it really touched me as to the testament of a person's faith in a time of struggle. I regard it as an honor to of been afforded the opportunity to of been given this book to read in a time of need.

I was looking for a book that summarized World history during the 20th century and this is the one I chose to buy. I was more than happy with my copy. It is easy to look up specific events, and great for general browsing. I only had two complaints - one, that there was MORE detail in it (although that would have been very hard for a single volume!), and two, it didn't come with the CD that was made to go with it.

What can I say? The book is an incredible collection of every notable historical event in the last 100 years.

The BEST part, to me, is the "chain reference" feature. When you get to the bottom of an article (about, say, the completion of the Hindenburg), there is a small date in italics at the end which points you to the next article concerning the Hindenburg. This is OUTSTANDING for following a chain of events through history.

GREAT reading for knowledge or leisure!

Cor, blimey! You won't be disappointed with this one. So many pages of so many stories, taken from the headlines as they were that day. It's almost like being there, be it 15, or 50 years ago. If you want to see how the print media saw the headlines as they were written then, this is the book for you.

This is an excellent book detailing the symptoms, causes, and research information. It is not the best one to give to supportive friends and family. Too lengthy and statistics might be overwhelming making it hard to hold their attention.
I am finding it very helpful for myself. It helps explain some of the research and possible help available.

I was fortunate enough to find this book right after I was diagnosed. It explained everything I wanted to know, and more. Each chapter or section begins with a literary quotation that brings the subject into focus. The second section is heavily scientific, and the author even recommends skipping it and reading it later. I found the second section well written, but complex. It requires several readings. Each chapter of the book ends with a "Summing Up" paragraph (especially helpful in the scientific section)that helps you remember what you just read.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what is happening inside his/her body. However, it is not the best choice for someone who just wants to feel better without understanding the biology behind this complex syndrome.

"All About Fibromyalgia" is a great book! I have read half a dozen books about Fibromyalgia (several in my possession), and this book is the most informative of them all. It has more technical information than the others I've read, which helps me understand the mysteries of Fibromyalgia even more. I wish I had read this book first.

This is mostly a collection of mini-histories of the various American businesses and inventions that arose after the Civil War, which are often hugely fascinating on a purely factual level. Boorstin's big argument is that American life became more and more unmoored to local places and common bodies of knowledge, resulting in a disorienting and dispiriting world of mass marketing and suburbs, with gadgets that worked in ways no one can understand. There is a right-wing drift to his ideas, but the sureness of his opinions is nice to hear even if you don't agree.

Many have described Boorstin's "The Americans" series as being right-wing. I do not concur. He writes about a period, in reality our age, as if it is still happening because it is. The third and final book in the series shows that he is unsure if the changes from the Civil War to the present day have not all been for the betterment of mankind. Although written three decades ago, I would say that this book is more relevant than ever. I think that everyone should read "The Americans" series. There is a bit more of Boorstin's curmugeony personality in this last book, but don't let that disuade you from enjoying a very complex perspective of America in the Twentieth Century and, very possibly, the Twenty-First Century.

In un-Zinn-like, yet still richly diverse prose Mr. Boorstin gives the fair-minded liberal battleground to do revisionist work. Another reviewer on this site reads Boorstin as "drifting to the right". True enough, but by simultaneously worrying about the extent of 'progressive' change in Democratic America and declaring the (legitimate) concern of progressives to continue to press for even more, lest such ideas retreat to a lonely theoretical corner (time out!), he seems to be opining our past as the Bennet-Brookhiser-Will team will never do: Jefferson, Madison, Adams, and all of their Western European enlightened brothers' didn't know too many of the challenges ahead. That's why Madison left a record of the spirited talks in the hallowed halls of Philly way long ago. He read centuries of history to formulate his ideas for civility and government...as Susan B., Huey Long, MLK and Noam Chomsky (HAH!) have done in later years.
