A well-informed, practical, positive resource
A readable, well-informed, and wide-ranging exploration of Alzheimer's--really an excellent resource. I'm an ombudsman volunteer and needed to learn more about this disease, and especially wanted something that wasn't all gloom and doom. Caregivers in particular should find this book useful. It provides up-to-date information on how the disease "behaves," and then devotes several chapters to considering how the best possible care can be provided for persons with early stages of Alzheimer's. If their needs for intimacy, community, and meaningful activity are met, the author says, the person with Alzheimer's can be relatively happy. There are chapters on what it's like for the person who has the disease, ways to improve communication, appropriate activities, planning for future care, and caring for the caregiver, among other topics. Throughout there's enough detail to be useful, but not so much that you feel overwhelmed. There are many practical suggestions, informed by compassion and professional expertise. There's also a helpful list of resources at the back, along with citations to resources in the professional literature. Overall, an excellent contribution for those of us looking for better ways to think about and respond to the Alzheimer's challenge.

The best!
I found this to be the best book on Alzheimer's disease that I have ever read. I recommend it to people who are walking through this disease at all stages, not just early stages. The author's sensitivity and respect for the people with AD as well as vast knowledge in this field shines through and creates a book that is not only good reading but also brings hope and enlightenment.

Perfect!
This book covers absolutely everything you would want to know about caring for a person with Alzheimer's Disease. I really appreciated its combination of honesty tempered with kindness. It includes not only the author's considerable knowldege of the topic, but also the perspectives of victins of Alzheimer's as well as a host of different caregivers -- real people, all of them. When I read this book, I felt that it had covered every single one of the myriad conflicting emotions I feel every day in joining with my family to care for my father.

you can now make bread better than what you had in france
this book teaches you how to bake the best bread you've ever ever had. and it's surprisingly easy.i've been making bread on the weekends and such for about 15 years now, ever since i saw a recipe for batter bread in an old joy of cooking. but although i'd tried many recipes and supposed "tips and tricks," i couldn't get a tasty or really beautiful european-style country loaf.so i would go to gourmet shops and spend US$5-7 a loaf and think,"o if i only had the fancy steam oven, the expensive mixer, then...."but daniel wing shows you how anybody with the most simple equipment can make incredible bread. although a lot of the book is devoted to building a brick oven, he explains how you can get that brick-oven effect with a regular home oven for only $50 with a special baking dish called "la cloche."if you've made a lot of bread, or read many recipes, you have certain ideas about"how bread should be made." it turns out a lot of the conventional wisdom is wrong! daniel wing includes a lot interesting scientific information that proves why his methods are superior to the conventional wisdom. following his methods gave me unbelievable results: crusty, tasty, made-in-a-french-village bread. i'll never go back to my old way of breadmaking. the best part -- the methods in this book are actually less work than the supposed "rapid" methods you find elsewhere.

Wonderful book, wonderful resource
Dan Wing and Alan Scott have answered all the questions I have ever asked about bread and ovens, and then some. After baking regular yeasted bread for years, I learned to make small, wood-fired ovens out of mud, and started making naturally leavened breads. In the process, I stumbled onto some of the "secrets" of good bread, for which I was very happy. For people who don't want to spend years stumbling, however, The Bread Builders is a thorough, authoritative, and inspiring door into the hows and whys of really good bread. For people who already know the "secrets," it's an absolutely brilliant explanation and exploration of what makes good bread (part of which is, of course, the oven).

If you want to understand the principles of what you're doing, this is it. And if you want to build a commercial quality oven for baking your own bread, here are plans and detailed instructions. I have had the pleasure of meeting, and learning a little about ovens from Alan Scott. I am very happy that now, in addition to having a master baker on my bookshelf, I also have a master oven builder as well. Thank you both very much.

Amateur Artisan Baker's Bible
This is a great book for the amateur artisan baker and it fulfills its two primary goals admirably. For the artisan baker, it provides the stoichiometry behind baking naturally-leavened bread - allowing one to adapt the basic formula and create new recipes that work! For those of you who, like me, try to recreate that hearth-baked bread flavor and texture in a conventional oven (only to fail), this book provides detailed plans and step-by-step instructions on constructing your own masonry oven! I have many bread cookbooks but this one is a real treasure! Buy it now!

Have fun with this book
Dreamweaver MX Magic is a delight. It really is almost like a box of chocolates and you get to pick out whatever piece you want to try. There are thirteen unique projects that cover a wide and useful range of real-world website needs. Each chapter is stand-alone so you can target whatever you need to learn. Each chapter begins with an explanation of what you will accomplish. The accompanying CD provides all required files including copies of the finished projects.

Step-by-step you are walked through the project until it is complete. The steps are very precise and do allow you to complete the project without holes. (Initially copied to the PC, the files are locked but Dreamweaver automatically prompts you to make them writable.) However, as the book states, this is not a beginner's book and it does expect familiarity with Dreamweaver, HTML, and the specific topic at hand. Several times I had to reread a step in order to understand what was intended. Yet, it's all there. No hidden steps.

There are two features that make the book very resourceful. One is the timely screen shots so you can get a visual as to what menu/tab/property to change. Sometimes the screen shots can be tiny at times, but then the necessary parameters are circled. Another nice feature is the extra "notes" that explain nuances such as browser differences or how to maneuver the page in Dreamweaver. Nothing is overlooked.

This is simply an excellent companion book on how to accomplish specific website functions by using Dreamweaver MX. If you're comfortable in Dreamweaver and need guidance on using it to create solid and functional websites, you won't be disappointed.

Easy to follow instructions
DREAMWEAVER MX MAGIC
AUTHOR: Sean Nicholson, Brad Halstead, et al.
PUBLISHER: New Riders
REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades

BOOK REVIEW: The very first thing you notice when you open the books is the clean page layouts and clearly written instructions. It is laid out in step-by-step, numbered format that makes it very easy to follow. As you work through the various exercises, you will notice blocks of text set in a partially framed green box. These contain various notes, warnings and tips. Dreamweaver MX Magic has plenty of exercises to work through and have graphical views of the work so you can't go wrong on what you are suppose to be learning.

A CD comes with the book and contains the following information: all the project files, trial versions of Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX and Coldfusion Server MX, as well as extensions, plug-ins and a list of web links where you can get help and other information.

Ever wished you could change one thing that is in every page of your web? Project 2 and 3 will help you work in a template and explain what it does to help you design better. Or how about a search engine on your site so your customers can find that certain item they are looking for without having to look through all the pages of the site? Project 8 will teach you how to do it. Then there are layers and database-drive username and password to learn in Project 12 and 13.

Dreamweaver MX Magic will provide you with a solid basic understanding of a few of the special features in this new Dreamweaver/Fireworks program. If these are the programs you design in, be sure to get a copy of this book. It will be well worth the price of the book.

smart AND pretty
One of the great joys of life is finding a book that is not only enjoyable, but also well designed and beautiful to look at. Dreamweaver MX Magic is not just clear and concise in relating its information, but also a thing to behold in its design and layout!

Dreamweaver MX Magic assumes you have a working knowledge of Dreamweaver and Fireworks. From this point it sets up projects based on the lesson of each chapter. The files necessary to each project are found on the included disk. The book takes you step by step through each project, using screen grabs to illustrate the necessary actions to be taken.

I highly recommend Dreamweaver MX Magic. My productivity has quickly increased to the point that not only will I ask my boss for a raise, but I should have more time to work on my novel at the office!

Real Help For Patients
Dr. Wallace gives a comprehensive explanation of what fibromyalgia is, what happens in the body as it is happening, and helpful information to cope with this debilitating problem. It is a book I can go back to again and again and learn something new about my condition. Just knowing more has helped me not to go into depression as a flare is occuring and to plan to do something for myself when the flare begins to subside. It is a comfort for patients and their families to know what's going on, that this pain and other symptoms are real and that the patient is not crazy (because it certailly CAN feel that way). I am very grateful that Dr. Wallace and Janice Brock Wallace wrote this book. Taking one's self out of the dark under the circumstances of having fibromyalgia gives one hope and the courage to carry on, include it in their life, and find something rewarding to do within the framework of being disabled with this condition. It is absolutely the best fibromyalgia book I have read and brought tears to my eyes to know that someone really understands this syndrome. Thank you, Dr. Wallace!

Awesome
I was so impressed with this book. It's the most comprehensive, easy to read, understandable book I've ever read on Fibromyalgia. I think Dr. Wallace has covered every topic from A-Z.

A Comprehensive, No-Nonsense Explanation of Fibromyalgia
I found Dr. Wallace's book to be extremely informative. He discusses the dynamics of fibromyalgia in layman's terms, as well as the mechanisms of the syndrome scientifically.
Being a health care professional myself, i appreciated the succinct nature of the book. I have read it twice from the library and it was so good that I feel it necessary have at home for reference. Also, I have recommended it to 3 women that I personally know with fm.

Interesting, plus the preface is great
I recommend this book to any Western dilettante who, like myself, is intrigued by anything called "a Japanese tradition" but prefers the comfortably exotic world of the tea ceremony and "Memoirs of a Geisha" to the disorienting and totally unfathomable features of current Japanese pop culture. It's as much a look at the ceremony itself as a portrait of a certain romanticizing interpretation of Japanese culture, written by a scholar who was straddling both worlds and sought to explain one to the other. The introduction is immensely readable, not to mention informative - many amusing turns of phrase in there which I wish I remembered for occasional use (need to reread the thing!). A treat rarely offered at this price, even if you read it only once.

An inexpensive, high quality edition of a classic.
For anyone interested in Asian, and particularly Japanese, culture, this book is a must. By following the history of tea and its role in the spiritual and cultural development of Japan, this slim volume gives the reader remarkable insight into the Japanese mind. Written with a keen sense of humor, the Book of Tea is very readable and entertaining, while at the same time illustrating the Japanese passion for the simple. This version is a quality translation, and you cannot beat the price. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Japan, Buddhism, Taoism, or tea.

So much more than tea
On the surface, this is a book about history - the history of tea, and art, and religion. But this is really a book about so much more - it compares the culture and way of thinking of the East and West, the past and the present. It makes the reader think about and reassess what is important in life, what is really beautiful, what is worth keeping or fighting for. What is dignity.

This essay, which wends its way between the discovery of tea, flower arranging, architecture and Taoism along with other enticing subjects, is truly an enlightening and thrilling book, in a quiet and gentle way (is that possible?) Whether you are interested in East Asian culture, Tea, or would just like a compass to help you re-orientate your priorities, you will probably gain something from this ode to the importance and influence of Tea.

Elbow Room
Published in Paperback by MIT Press (October, 1984)
Author: Daniel Clement Dennett
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $33.25
Average review score:

Hardly disappointing and poor...
Daniel Dennett's _Elbow Room_ is a nicely written piece on the compatibility of determinism and free will. He notes that even if the world is deterministic, there is a certain amount of freedom (or elbow room) for man to operate within. The previous reviewer who stated that "you don't have to think about it very long to realize that free will can't exist in a deterministic [universe]" has apparently missed all of the philosophical work relating to "Compatibilism," which is the very idea that free will and determinism are not mutually exclusive. Dennett presents a nice case for the plausibility of this viewpoint, pointing out why the scary thought experiments that others have created to make determinism seem so horrible cannot be reality. He also makes a clear distinction (that is sometimes blurred) between fatalism and determinism, and in questioning some underlying assumptions makes the idea of free will much more understandable. It may take some concentration to read (I am only beginning to study Philosophy and so had to read a number of sentences over before fully comprehending), but that hardly takes away from the quality of the book. Definitely recommended!

It takes some intelligence to grasp this book
The previous reviewer completely missed the key points of this book. Dennett, whose brilliance is evident in most of his works, makes the point that free will without determinism is no free will. If your choices aren't determined, but are outside cause and effect, then they are random, aren't they? If your choices are random, then how are you effecting them? You are not, and hence have no will. The point is not whether the world is deterministic or not (even if it is, it doesn't mean it's tractable), but that it is still YOU that controls your actions, even if you were influenced. Of course you were influenced, how else do you decide something?

Excellent Book
Outstanding book - Dennett is a great writer. He tackles one of the most important philosophical issues with this little volume, are we free or not? Does free-will exist or is it just a fanciful dream? Dennett does a good job of putting these questions in their right historical, philosophical, and scientific context. I read this for the first time in Grad School and have kept it in my library since. If you want to understand the issue of free-will, correctly, then you need to purchase this book and give it a read.

Flying Tigers : Claire Chennault and the American Volunteer Group
Published in Unknown Binding by Smithsonian Institution Press ()
Author: Daniel Ford
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $9.90
Average review score:

The Best on the Best
Dan Ford's book on the Flying Tigers is not only fascinating, but factual. I've read just about everything there is on the AVG, including Pappy Boyington's obscure novel, and Ford makes most other work take second place. The story of the AVG is one of the great romantic, adventure stories in American aviation history. And, for the most part, that is how it has been portrayed leaving one to wonder what really happened out there in those skies over China and Burma so long ago? The only criticism I would have is that I am sure there is some things that the author left out, mainly on the mercenary nature of the venture. I wish Ford would do an update to this work which will stand as an important contribution to aviation history.

A first-rate combat history!
This a a great combat history, that treats the Flying Tigers as real men instead of cardboard heroes, and it gives the Japanese side of the story as well. Surprise! The Tigers didn't go into combat before Pearl Harbor. And they never met a Zero in combat.

Not so surprising, it looks like they overclaimed their victories by 150 percent or more, putting the Tigers in the usual range for western pilots in the early years of the war. (The Japanese were even more enthusiastic overclaimers!)

The Tigers pulled a triumph out of a losing campaign, and unlike other Allied air units they regularly out-fought the Nakajima Oscar fighter that was the Japanese Army's version of the Zero. This is a rousing book. Read it!

Thoroughly Researched, Compellingly Written
For all its detail and focus on purely factual data, FLYING TIGERS is an exhilarating ride. Its clinical tone is tempered by an impressive amount of insight into the multitudes of personalities involved with the AVG--often including the Japanese perspective. It's a sprawling book, with mountains of information on every page. This could easily have been a ponderous, heavy-handed account by a detached historian; instead, Ford uses effective language to turn the individual stipples of the story into a fascinating, gradated canvas. It's rare to encounter a work of such vividness by an author whose view is from after the fact, rather than from amid the period of history concerned. Recommended.

Diagnosis and prescription
In our brave new world of interdependent global economies and fragmenting societies, communicating effectively with one another has become indispensable to our success and even to our survival. In his new book, noted social scientist and observer of human nature Daniel Yankelovich provides a diagnosis of our main communication problems and then a prescription for their cure. Doing dialogue sounds like a simple task, but doing it well requires attention and skills that are not common in our culture. Yankelovich offers specific information on how to conduct successfully dialogue to today's managers, executives, and other leaders, so that they can improve their effectiveness on all fronts.

Excellent book helps you connect meaningfully @home/work.
Algough we all talk, discuss and debate, few of us actually dialogue. And there is much to learn about how to do that successfully and much to gain if you do it.

In this short, easy to read book famed social scientist Daniel Yakelovich shows the reader how to create situations that will foster empathy and understanding. This has tremendous ramifications for your professional life ( where much of the book focusses) but also has implications for family and personal life. If we can learn how to understand the other person's point of view, how to defuse angry situations, how to connect meaningfully with another person and how to create a win/win environment -- we will all benefit.

A practical and effective primer
Americans have always had faith in the idea that bringing people together to talk about their problems is the first step to solving them -- a belief we have actively exported to troubled nations and areas around the world. But not all talk leads to positive solutions or results. The Magic of Dialogue, by sociologist Daniel Yankelovich, is a practical and effective primer for anyone who needs to transform talk from discussion or debate to more productive dialogue.

More complex than discussion or debate, dialogue requires empathy, suspension of status differences, and surfacing closely held or hidden assumptions. This book provides a road map for doing just that, as well as dealing with strong emotions and a host of pot-holes that often derail the best intended efforts at dialogue. Written in straightforward and accessible language, The Magic of Dialogue is a simple, effective guide for developing the skills to generate dialogue and keep it on track.

Great Title, Great Epilogue
My room mate asked me why it was taking so long to read this book, and my reply was that it was hard to stumble through Glick's clumsy writing. My interest, however, lay in my previous residency in CO and my interest in the subject, so I struggled through the chapters (many with very clever titles). I lived near Telluride for several years, and watched many of the same actions take place as did in Vail, re: the disparity of money and living conditions and in the attitudes of the haves and have-nots. Environmental issues are just one of the many issues in combat with residents and eco-groups against many of these new conglomerate ski companies, some with owners based far from operations.

Glick does a great job with the interviews and investigation; but his long, run-on sentences left much to be desired. If I didn't have an interest in his viewpoint on the subject, I would have put the book down in the third chapter. If you want the gist of it all, just read the epilogue, which - IMO - contains the best information and most well-written part of the book. This, alone, is worth the money, as well as the information. I'll never drive past Vail again without remembering the issues and the personal stories in this book.

Long live the lynx.

Rocky Mountain Whodunnit
Vail/Beaver Creek is probably my favorite vacation spot on earth in the summertime...about the only time of year I can afford it (and even then barely). This is a fascinating book, part history of Vail, part meditation on the issues surrounding growth in the affluent west (ie, how a resort for the rich and famous affects the locals and the environment), but largely a whodunnit surrounding the 1998 arson on Vail Mountain.

I wouldn't go so far at to call this a "Rocky Mountain version of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' " - Glick's writing isn't that smooth and his character development isn't that deep. But I am fascinated by this part of the country and it's a good story that he has to work with. In the end he presents all the available evidence and lets you draw your own conclusions - probably the best way to end considering that the arson itself remains unsolved.

Powder Burn
Powder Burn was a GREAT book that provided me with the information that i needed to know about the mystery of who tourched vail. I learned some stuff in my political geography class about this that is what got me interested in it and made me read it. I recommend it to all people who like mystery books with a small twist of history.
