EXCELLENT Explaination of the Catholic Priesthood
Written by an Archbishop, this short book gives an excellent overview of the role of priest in the Catholic Church. I gained a much deeper appreciation for the priesthood and my call to the priesthood was strengthened. I highly recommend picking up this VERY inexpensive, yet HIGHLY VALUABLE, short book!

Literature about work that really works
This collection from Bottom Dog Press is excellent for anyone who's been looking for a good college-text to get students talking about literature and work. In these stories, students will find their fathers, mothers, uncles, aunts, and even themselves. Literature about work provides a rich opportunity for discussion and learning, and this book is definetely rich in its potential. Bret Comar's story is especially breath-taking.

Out of Silence: Selected Poems
Published in Hardcover by Triquarterly (May, 1992)
Authors: Muriel Rukeyser and Kate Daniels
Amazon base price: $28.00
Average review score:

Breathtaking
Muriel Rukeyeser is a wonderful poet, much neglected in the canon of 20th century poets. Her words are awe-inspiring and evoke so many feelings, it's hard to know what to do with them when they emerge. Read these poems out loud, dramatically. Hopefully you will be inspired to stand up straight and shout "Yes, Yes! That's exactly right!" much as I was. Reading her words is like giving my soul pen and paper and being able to read the things it would write.

The Papers and the Papers
Published in Paperback by Columbia University Press (April, 1999)
Author: Sanford J. Ungar
Amazon base price: $20.50
Used price: $3.59
Average review score:

Fascinating depiction of a fascinating time
Ungar's book is a wonderful retelling of the Pentagon Papers controversy, from start to finish. It follows the stories of Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the documents, the New York Times reporters and editors who worked with them (in a secret location, for fear of Nixon's government), and the compelling legal battle that followed their publication, reaffirming some of our most basic First Amendment rights. If you want to read just one book on the Pentagon Papers, this should be it.

Papers on the War

Always More War
I read this book a long time ago, and it impressed me greatly. By providing a series of insights into American approaches to a conflict with enemies of the United States who happened to be foreign, if the press can be believed, and by setting himself up as someone who wished to examine the issue of individual guilt in this context, the author managed to transform himself from a secret server of the system to the most famous domestic enemy of official secrecy in matters relating to national security. Those people who know the identities of the President and Secretary of Defence in November, 1965, might easily guess which one of them sent the other a secret memo expressing the fear that the odds were about even that the future could be worse. If this doesn't make any sense to you, you might gain something from reading this book.

A chronological study of Jesus' parables
A parable is a fictitious but true-to-life story designed to teach a specific spiritual, philosophical, or life lesson. Parables comprised about one-third of all of the teachings of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels. Jesus crafted his stories to confuse His opponents, confront the uncommitted, and teach his followers. Understanding Jesus' parables is essential to the revelation of His life-transforming message. Ideally suited for contemporary students of the New Testament, Parables In The Eye Of The Storm specifically addresses this necessity with a chronological study of Jesus' parables and is a highly recommended addition to personal reading lists.

Extremely helpful for raising children of all ages.
Dr. Singer has written a very simple and easy to read book on how to raise children. I especially liked his focus on planning and other self help tools that are contained in the text. The book can also be used on the spot when faced with different situations with children.

I have recommended the book to my family and friends. The best part about the book are the forms in the text that can be used over and over. The book is user friendly, simple, and effective. My hat is off to Dr. Singer for keeping it to the point. I would recommend the book to anyone who is also thinking of having children.
