interesting early Hendrix transcriptions
This book collects a handful of Hendrix tablatures, with fairly detailed commentary. Some of the transcriptions are a bit off (awkward fingerings, etc.), but the book is interesting as one of the first "note for note" tab rock lead guitar books.

A Vehicle that Turns Left
To his credit, Fogel has taken the time to research and check his facts about conditions in the California Missions. Though I think he rejects the excellent work of population biologist Sherburne Cooke too handily, he has backed his points with facts. What let me down is the last chapter of this book which he uses as a platform for his views on several unrelated, contemporary issues including the place of gay Catholics in the Church, ordination of Women, etc. This had no place in a work of history, especially when tied only to the rest of the content by the author's dislike of the Catholic Church.

Good conclusion
I had read the first two books in the series years before I found this one (through Amazon.com). As I started the book I came to recall the characters and why I constantly searched for the concluding book to the series. This is not great literature, but it is a good solid fantasy tale and has the added benefit in today's epic fantasy literative world of being short. All three books together would not equal one Robert Jordan WOT novel. So, if you are looking for a nice series that can be completed very quickly - this is for you - good luck finding them all!

The King That Never Was

Reads like a drama with directions to the future film makers
The basic premise is that animals and insects share a common language which is understandable by humans if they were to hear it spoken. There is magic, mischif and nobility in this transhumance world. I could see this work as an animated feature for children.

self understanding
I read this book in the manner the author suggests. In doing that a person needs to read each chapter more than once. It did prove to be a task that showed me some of the ways in which i had been sleepwalking thru my life. I enjoyed the correlation of multiple philosophies.

The Laity in the Middle Ages: Religious Beliefs and Devotional Practices

The Laity n the Middle Ages
This history of French and Italian Catholic life in the Middle Ages is not a primer. Knowledge of the historical events of these times is necessary to follow the author and words like, "eschatological", "hagiography"' and "confraternity" will encourage neophytes to keep a dictionary handy. Notwithstanding the advanced knowledge of this subject needed to read the book with ease, it is a good collection of essays on the categories of Catholics during the Middle Ages and the forces and philosophies that characterized these groups. The place and challenges of women in the church during this timeframe is given ample discussion.

Law Dictionary for Non-Lawyers

Good, But Unnecessary for Most Readers
Oran and Tosti do a nice job of defining legal terms for the nonlawyer. As a professional who needs to understand legal terminology, however, I have found this book unnecessary. I bought "Law Dictionary for Nonlawyers" before I acquired "Black's Law Dictionary." The latter is so complete and has such clear definitions that I rarely even bother to use "Law Dictionary for Nonlawyers."

I strongly recommend that the layman buy and use "Black's Law Dictionary," rather than this or other legal dictionaries designed for laypersons.

Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe
Published in Hardcover by North Books (August, 2001)

Unhurriedly Pragmatic Adventure Story
In the literary world it is perhaps blasphemy to say a bad word against Daniel Defoe's most acclaimed novel. So here goes. The fact that the book was originally titled The Life And Strange Surprising Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe illustrates the major flaw in Defoe's literary form. Put simply, this would be a far more interesting and gripping story were it not so superfluously lengthy. The author makes a habit of repeating himself, especially when it comes to the act of dispatching kittens, which seems to be more of an obsession here than octogenarian ladies are to MatronsApron. It is difficult, you may think, to keep the subject matter fresh when describing the daily tribulations of a fellow stranded on an island for thirty years, without occasionally repeating yourself. True, but perhaps a straightforward solution to this diminutive quandary would be to simply truncate the duration of the story. There are some wonderfully intriguing and suspenseful moments, and some juicy action to boot, but sadly these are gratuitously diluted by lengthy descriptions of the unremarkable everyday goings on in Crusoe's life, and rather than serving to build up the suspense, they merely obstruct the reader's relationship with the more exciting parts of the story.
However, those with more patience than my ignorant self will find in Robinson Crusoe a delightful tale, which as well as being a fictional documentary of the most unusual thirty years of Mr. Crusoe's life, also has time to ponder upon philosophical and theological ideas, in a style that makes the reader feel as if they are involved in the conflicts between the functionalist and cynical thoughts going on in Crusoe's mind. It may not be a gripping white-knuckle adventure, being rather more leisurely and acquiescent, but it is still rather easy to see why Robinson Crusoe is regarded by some as one of the greatest novels of all time.
