Nature at it's worst in the middle ages.
Once again Daniel P. Mannix shows his prowess as a historical documentor. The author of "Those Who Are About To Die" and "The Hell Fire Club" takes us back to France in the middle ages and an ancient Paris under siege from a pack of bloodthirsty wolves. More than just a historical account, Mannix, in his typically engrossing style takes us into the life of the wolf pack, revealing to the reader the lifestyle of a wolf in medieval europe, and the unforseen outcome when nature's boundries are crossed. A bit more heavily fictionalized than Mannix's other works, and somewhat anthropomorphic, but if you're a nature lover with an interest in mideval history this ones for you. Warning: graphically violent...otherwise it wouldn't be Mannix.

Good summary of work days versus work hours
This book compares issues involving work days and work hours in the United States and Germany. The author argues that looking at hours/week does not tell the whole story. Most of the information is from the employees perspective although there is a chapter on how employers react to changing demand (change work hours or work days). The book also provides some evidence concerning the work habits of different groups (low skill, couples without children, couples with children, etc.). This book is well written and I would recommend it to anyone interested in work schedules.

A fairly solid textbook on current security thinking
"World Security" is a book that seeks to introduce readers to the main issues that currently dominate the field of international security today. A selection of some of the topics included in the book are; arms proliferation, ethnic warfare, criminal violence, human migrations, etc... There are 19 different chapters each written by a different author. As such, each chapter does not go into too much detail on their specific topic. Instead, offering the reader only a very introductory survey of the issues.
Given this structure I think the book will be most appealing as a textbook for an introductory university course on the issue of international security. But if you are someone looking to gain a cursory understanding of what is at issue then this might be the book for you (although, maybe at softcover prices!)

Refinement of artistic work through multiple castings.
The line that has always remained fixed in my mind was Gauguin's comment
on the refinement of a work. I think on a very basic level, to simply make a primary statement and move on has a very satisfying feeling to it. Miles Davis, among others, was fond of one takes because there is a spirit that is captured in that take, often lost on recurrent ones because of increased expectations, abstraction of an "ideal", and trying to recall of the "good stuff" while dismissing the "bad". Gauguin's work and life capture this idea quite well, and he voices a call-to-arms by bringing to light this notion of the non-refinement of the work. In Japanese ink calligraphy, the calligrapher has but one chance to draw to the rice paper; the live jazz improvisation must consider ALL of the performance to be part of the statement. It is a further comment against the hyperabstraction of Western artistic ideals, psuedo-ideals, that canonize relative cultural ideals and discard that which is considered non-beatiful or non-meaningful.
