For the Basic Geology of Mammoth Cave, Look No Further!
Art Palmer has been caving in the area seemingly forever, and the book shows it. Written for the non-geologist yet with plenty of details (& black-and-white pictures), it gives you the tools to understand the cave & it's setting. By using examples from the cave, as well as maps & simple diagrams, the complex nature of cavern formation in this area is explained. The ways that the geology influence the layout of the passages is particularly informative, and the detailed step-by-step evolution of the various levels & passages is covered in detail. Finally, the chapter on the geology of the various tour routes changes the tours from interesting walking trips to a virtual feast, with well-written descriptions and detailed maps. If you like caves like Mammoth and want to learn more about the geology of the longest cave in the world, turn to this book.

Striking and persuasive virtuosity of thought
Arthur M. Young invented and created the Bell helicopter, the bubble-topped device we know from MASH, and the first commercially licensed helicopter in the country (and I think the world.) The same pragmatism, insight, and stubbornness that enabled him to realize that creation gives him the brainpower and audacity to come up with a theory of meaning that derives, in a flat-footed way, from equations of high-school physics. It stretches your brain in a direction, and to an extent, that will surprise you. I first read this book in the late 70's, and while it has attracted some following, it remains largely undiscovered. I have reread it twice recently and I see more each time. The Reflexive Universe is the sequel, and it is equally wonderful. AMY's thinking can be sampled at arthuryoung.com.

Another wonderful book by Arthur Geisert
This book is so much fun! My boys love it - they giggle and laugh all the way through it. The drawings are wonderful and there's a great message in the end about teamwork! We can't wait to see what Arthur comes up with next!

Gilbert and Sullivan and Their Victorian World

A triumph
I have enjoyed Gilbert & Sullivan's plays since I was a little girl. I watched performances of their comic operas that my family taped off of public television, but I never knew much about the men who wrote these wonderfully entertaining operas. Just recently I had an opportunity to give a presentation on Gilbert and Sullivan's operas for a college course. This book was the first one I picked up and it turned out to be the only one I needed. This well-written book gives an entertaining account of the lives of these great men. The book also paints a vivid picture of what life and, more importantly, the theater were like when Gilbert & Sullivan began their collaboration. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about Gilbert & Sullivan, Victorian life, or English theater.

Gleanings from Paul

A Highly Necessary and Useful Work
I highly recommend Pink's fine study of the Pauline prayers. In a day when prayer is badly misunderstood and abused, this fine study of the apostolic example of prayer in Paul's writings provides a much needed balance. You will truly be blessed as you consider the fact that the Apostle did not pray for worldly blessings but true spiritual blessings that abide for eternity.

Gleanings in the Godhead

Letting God be God
It is a shame that this book is out of print. Of all the books written concerning the Person and character of God, this one belongs very near the top. Pink writes with the intent of letting God be just who He says He is, no punches pulled. In a day when we often redefine the Person of God by first making ourselves the standard, this book is desparately needed to be read by ministers and lay people alike. Maybe that's why it's out of print; far less people buy books today that let God be God at the expense of our exalted view of sinful man. Gleanings in the Godhead blows apart our habitual sin of making God in our own image. And it does so because it is a biblical book. Pink is only reiterating what God has already said about Himself.
