The Faces of War are the faces of reality.
It hit me with the impact of a burst of burp gun fire, leaping off page 406 like the dancing muzzle flash of that same burp gun in the dark of night. My God! I was there. Forty-five years ago, I was there. T-Bone Hill, with its valley to the east that led to the gaping "V" of the Alligator Jaws.

Yes, I'm one of the 201 who were privileged to contribute to this remarkable work. And what variety and diversity it has. What differing perspectives each contributor brings with him. One will write about banality, another brutality. It's all there -- courage and cowardice, fear and terror, boredom and horror, torn bodies and death, frost bite and heat exhaustion, blisters and thirst, brilliance and stupidity. All that and more, for all that and more is what war is all about.

Five stars are not enough. 201 stars hardly do it justice. Nor is one picture worth just a thousand words. Each picture here is priceless. Thanks, Norm, for bringing the faces of war to life. Thanks, Art, for bringing the Korean vignettes to print. And thank you both for making it possible for all to remember this decisive conflict that turned the tide of the Cold War and started communism on its road to self-destruction.

What did you do in the Korean War, daddy ???
Fascinating tales all 201 of them. Narratives which encompass a varied and comprehensive kaleidoscope of men at War. Each yarn a gem in the overall picture of combat: its lethal firefights, the macabre comic moments, and the tedium, all blended to paint America"s forgotten combat troops, the true heroes they really were. While this maelstrom raged on,back home an apathetic American populace, dulled by the [ post WW2 ] Harry-Truman and his cohorts in DC & United Nations, as they tried to sweep the true signifigance of the WAR under the rug,the sour little WAR refused to just go away. In summation, these 201 combat campaigners saw the WAR for what it was - they were in it, up to their eyeballs nite/day. Buy this unique book, read it and you tell me [ yeah, I"m one of the 201 stories ]. We can forgive, but we will never forget!! END

Powerful and gut-wrenching!
These are true-grit memories from the soldiers who fought in the foxholes of the Forgotten War. Worth reading for anyone interested in knowing what it really takes to keep our country free.

Follow in the footsteps of notable writers
Use literature and literary figures to follow in the footsteps of notable writers and their settings with the aid of a title which covers many destinations, from the Prague of Kafka to Steinbeck's California setting for Cannery Row. Add first-person reflections on the literature containing the settings and you have an excellent take-along or travel planner.

A superbly presented compendium
Literary Trips: Following In The Footsteps Of Fame is a superbly presented compendium of observations, adventures, and travels of and by some of the best loved writers as they trekked around the world. A magnificent armchair travelogue, Literary Trips is divided as the world is: Africa to Australasia (Paul Bowles, T. E. Lawrence, Rohinton Mistry, Bruce Chatwin); North America: West (Malcolm Lowry, The Beats, D. H. Lawrence, Garrison Keillor and Sinclair Lewis); North America: East (Tennessee Williams, Margaret Mitchell and Tom Wolfe, Ayn Rand, Mark Twain, Elizabeth Smart); Caribbean and Latin America (Ernest Hemingway, Ian Fleming and Noel Coward, John Stephens and Frederick Catherwood); Great Britain and Ireland (W. B. Yeats, Jane Urquhart and the Bronte Sisters, A. A. Milne, Agatha Christie and Jane Austen); Continental Europe (Knut Hamsun, The Lost Generation, Mary Shelley). Highly recommended for both school and community library collections, Literary Trips is enhanced for the reader with a section on biographies and a "user friendly" index. A novel and original feature of this publication is that any of the chapters are available as separate, individual e-texts and downloadable from the GreatestEscapes.com website.

Literary Trips: Following in the Footsteps of Fame
This is a book to savor in a cigar lounge...in the corner of a jazz club...in front of a softly crackling fire at home. Or in a hammock under a royal palm in the deep, deep south.

I started out by nestling with the book into our oversized, down-filled sofa - and ended up traveling through one of the best reads of my life. Several times, I startled my husband with cries of "No kidding...Wow...I didn't know that...Ohmigod..." as I discovered new places in the hearts of my favorite authors. And delved into the lives of others I knew little about.

Literary Trips probes into the past, yet is formatted for the present. We're all used to reading in chunks now - short, self-contained sections that are complete, independent modules. And this book is totally "today" in that respect. Each chapter, written by a different person, is a complete story - gift-wrapped with its own special signature. Each has its own flavor, its own style, its own finds. Every writer has unearthed amusing tidbits and lively tales that add richness and depth to well researched and beautifully written prose.

The book is also an excellent travel guide for following in those famous footsteps. Each module contains a practical reference section listing hotels and other stomping grounds of famous feet ("Literary Sites"; "Literary Sleeps"). Each section also describes how to get to those grounds and provides useful tips and background information.

My favorite parts are the little surprises throughout. For example, did you know that: §Hemingway dedicated his Nobel Prize for literature to the patron saint of the basilica in Santiago de Cuba? § Ian Fleming wrote the James Bond novels at Goldeneye, his home in Jamaica, and named 007 after the local author of a book on birds? §When Ayn Rand was writing Atlas Shrugged, which took 12 years, she didn't leave her apartment for an entire month?

Another of the book's delightful dimensions is a smattering of recipes that could form a menu for a literary memorial party. You could honor D.H. Lawrence with his dandelion wine; Hemingway with double daiquiris; Mistry with Dhansak; and Sinclair Lewis with his "Sinful Christmas Cookies".

I'm always looking for inspiration for my own writing, and Lit Trips provides it on many fronts. Much of it comes from seeing so many authors "under one cover" - an excellent way to compare styles, to link lives, to see how they made their magic. But I was no less inspired by the talent of the book's contributing writers.

Awesome reference on an exceptional airplane!
I highly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in airplanes. Mr. Pearcy delivers the goods on an American built airliner that has become a global workhorse. Lots of outstanding photography and good information, this is a must have for every aviation library.

Great book about the MD-80
This is a must have for anyone who is interested in the MD-80. Its got alot of great pictures. I highly recommend this book.

Nice book to have for airliner fans
"McDonnell Douglas MD-80 & MD-90" is a very nice book that describes thoroughly the last single-aisle family built by McDonnell-Douglas and a must have item for those that are interested in the airliner industry.
It contains an extensive historical background, chronology of the development and production, aircraft specifications, production list and airline operators.
It's photograph selection is excellent and extensive, practically covering every operator of the MD-80/MD-90.
Unfortunately, I'd guess due to fact that this excellent aviation writer passed away while the book was in production, some photograph captions are incorrect or misleading, just to name a few: in pp. 6-7 AOM is mentioned as the biggest domestic carrier in Mexico, while it is widely known that AOM is a French Airline; in pp. 44-45 there is a photo of an Austrian MD-81 (OE-LDT), while the caption says: "Austrian OE-LML, taken in 1987". In fact the picture of Austrian MD-87 OE-LML is shown on pp. 40-41 with a correct caption; etc.
I'd love it, if the publisher some time later would re-publish the book with corrected information, so it would truly represent the author's exceptional work.
In any case, these are minor mistakes, so I'd recommend this book to everyone who needs to know more about the MD-80/MD-90.

Rest in Peace Arthur Pearcy and thanks for your invaluable contribution

Brilliant!
Beautifully written, facinating and touching; One of the best books I ever read!

What a fascinating book! I couldn't put it down. The characters are well defined and credible; the story must have been written by the Geisha herself - congrats, Arthur Golden!

A Review in the June 1998 issue of "Discover" magazine
When a collector bought a ragged book of maps in a secondhand Belgian bookstore in 1967, he had no idea he had turned up a lost cartographic treasure: an early atlas created by the sixteenth-century cartographer Gerardus Mercator. The 17 maps, reprinted for the first time - in exquisite, full-size facsimiles tucked with an opulent book into a slipcase - are justifiably pricey. Margaret Foley, "Discover" magazine, June 1998

Atlas Extraordinaire--Review in "Mercator's World" magazine
...Those not able to visit the relic in person can examine a facsimile of the one-of-a-kind atlas, compiled by Mercator around 1570, with an inaugural release by Walking Tree Press. The seventeen replica maps are accompanied by a richly illustrated, large-format book - published previously in French and Dutch - featuring essays by an international team of map scholars.

The authors leave no aspect of the fascinating history of the "Atlas of Europe" unexamined...The seventeen frameable facsimile maps are newly color-corrected and expertly printed. The text illustrations are drawn from collections throughout Europe and the United States. The hefty volume, stored in its own green slipcase, provides readers with a tactile adventure --something that tends to be overlooked in modern publishing - as well as a feast for the eyes and mind. Walking Tree's elegant edition combines the high art of maps with first-rate scholarly pursuits - a marvelous union Mercator would endorse. --- "Mercator's World" November/December 1997

Review in the January 1998 issue of Midwest Book Review
Born Gerhard Kremer of German parents in the town of Rapelmonde near Antwerp on March 5, 1512, Gerardus Mercator (like many other intellectuals of his time, very early in his life Latinized his German name) was a mapmaker, scholar, and religious thinker whose interests ranged from mathematics to calligraphy to the origin of the universe.

In 1544 he fell victim to the Inquisition, partly due to his Protestant beliefs and partly due to suspicions aroused by his wide travels in search of data for his maps. He was fortunate to be released after seven months with the charges of heresy lifted and his head and limbs still intact.

His 1564 wall map of the British Isles (included in his atlas) was the first detailed and accurate geographical picture of those islands -- and was used by a Scottish traitor to help France and Spain invade Britain and overthrow the Protestant Tudors. Mercator was one of the first mapmakers to cut up maps and bind them inside boards, later coining the term 'atlas' to refer to such collection of maps. One of the most revolutionary inventions in the history of cartography, Mercator's cylindrical world map projections (first used in 1569) enabled navigators to plot a long course in straight lines and has greatly influenced our image of the world to this very day.

In 1967 an anonymous buyer purchased a large, tattered book of maps in a second-hand bookshop in Belgium and unknowingly brought to the present a long-lost atlas by this renowned 16th century cartographer. The Mercator Atlas of Europe: Facsimile of the Maps By Gerardus Mercator Contained In The Atlas Of Europe, Circa 1570-1572 is a beautiful book showcasing seventeen facsimile map prints (suitable for framing) and a large-format 96-page book with 100 illustrations (80 in color). The Mercator Atlas of Europe is an ideal and highly recommended memorial fund acquisition selection for academic and community libraries.

It's a beautiful book, that my kid's love !
This book is a great children's book, as our ALL in this series. It is the one series that myself and my two children always look for on our bookmobile that visits us every week in town. They simply are great stories, that really leave you with a good feeling inside. You can really see the love in the stories.

Ted Tatosian Vernon Hills, Illinois

Excellent book for beginning readers
The flowing language and engaging text and illustrations encouraged my 6 year old son to try to read this "all by himself". Unlike many "early reader" books, the language is not awkward, and the repetitions are very natural. A pleasure.

A delightful, whimsical story for young... and old!
My daughter, 4, loves this story best of the several Mr Putter and Tabby stories that we have read. Unlike so many children's stories, this one (and the others in the series) convey a sense of real sense of human (and cat)character. The relationship between Mr. Putter and Tabby is loving and supportive. Most important, each story -- and especially this one -- communicates a wonderful sense of life lived with joy, respect, compassion and the muted simple little "heroics" of everyday life. In this case, sharing a wonderful red-and-white remote controlled biplane with neighborhood youngsters, especially with one boy who reminds Mr. Putter of himself as a boy.

While directed mainly to children 4 to 8 years old, they have touched by wife and I as much as my daughter as we have read them at bedtime. The small price of these books is more than worth the time spent and re-spent in the simple, caring world of Mr. Putter and Tabby.

Best Children's Bible Story Book
I remember this book as a child with great fondness. Now, I am reading it to my children and they too love the stories and the beautifully illustrated pictures. Using this book has opened the door to many questions about the story, God and of life itself. My favorite picture was the one where the father is hugging his son (the story of the Prodical Son).

Each story is no longer than one page of type and each comes with its own full color illustration. The majority of the book is taken from the Old Testament (granted the O.T. is longer) and focuses on the stories most people know. It then goes into the New Testament starting with the birth of Jesus and goes through until Jesus had ascended back into heaven.

If you have not seen this book, I suggest you purchase it and start reading it to your children or grandchildren.

My rating: A+

Wonderful Book- A Must Have!
To all Christian parents of little ones, this Bible story book by A. C. Mueller is a must have! Looking back over the years, I appreciate so much my parents buying and reading and rereading to us the Bible stories and lessons that shaped my beliefs and values. My family has owned a copy of this book for twenty-five years, and I have to say that it is one of the most beautiful Bible story books that we have in our family library. The illustrations by Richard Hook are precious!!! The hundreds of readings that it has endured have rendered it worn out, so now we are ordering a new one for the next generation of readers in our family that will love it as much as we did.

Jesus Loves the Little Children
This is our favorite Bible story book. We purchased our first copy fifteen years ago and wore it out reading it to our children. The most worn and faded page in the book is the story of Jesus blessing the children. How the young love to hear of Christ embracing and blessing the children!

This book has wonderful, simple storytelling, beautiful illustrations by Richard Hook and most importantly teaches plain Bible truths without false, modern interpretation. It is a classic.

Great Way to learn about he personality of God!
This is a great book to improve your understanding of who God is, and who Christ is. It goes through many aspects of God's personality that the average person could easily overlook and teaches some very deep leasons. This is a great book for going deeper in your relationship with the Lord.

Excellent layman's study
I found this book to a excellent study of the nature and attributes of God from a fully Biblical persepective. The book centers its theme on the subsitutional work of Christ throughout. I found it to be truly depthful and without, the far too often found, superficial and unsubstancial characteristics of works of this century. It is an excellent presentation of the Reformed view of God. It would be an asset to the Christian's library.

No parachute : a fighter pilot in World War I : letters written in 1917 by Lieutenant A.S.G. Lee, Sherwood Foresters, attached Royal Flying Corps
Published in Unknown Binding by Time Life ()
Author: Arthur Stanley Gould Lee

Average review score:

Too bad it's out of print.
A fine work like this is timeless. You really got a feel for what it was like to be in an old biplane during the First War. This story was totally believable too, with no bragging or exaggerated accounts of heroics or daring-do. An honest diary account of what a typical fighter pilot endured during those hazard filled days. Too often we think of WW I dogfighting as glamorous and exciting with the Red Baron zipping across the skies. This book will make you feel like you've really been there.

An excellent book for the aviation enthusiast.
This book is a compilation of letters and diary entries. They were made in the heat of the day, and through their immediacy let the reader feel what is was like to be a fighter pilot in 1917.

Lee tells us of how cold it was while on patrol at 20,000 feet and how peaceful the trenches seemed. Later we learn how stressful it was to be tasked with with ground attacks in a Camel. The reader also learns about all the little things in a pilot's life, like shooting frogs in a pond and partying like there was no tomorrow. And burying your squadron mates with frightening regularity.

This book is simply written, and makes no pretext of being a significant historical work. What is does, and does so well, is tell the story of the average joe trying to stay alive in the skies of the Western Front.

It is a story that will stay with you.

Heroically Understated Account of WWI Aerial Warfare
This is a work that deserves to be re-printed. It is accessible by the layman, and its aerial combat sequences are clearly written. The author has a pleasing writing style, and he does not fall into the self-worship that sometimes afflicts the writing of combat fliers. Lee effectively communicates the gallantry and the hopelessness of aerial combat without a parchute.

One of the most fascinating parts of the book is Lee's exploration of the irrational, purely negligent, decision not to equip pilots with parachutes. Parachutes were available prior to the war and were used by balloon-observors throughout the struggle and German aviators in the last year. Due to simple, murderous bureacratic inattention, pilots went to their deaths who could have been saved by a bundle of silk.

Finally, Lee's work is the only one I know of that takes up the ground attack role of aircraft in the First World War. This is often thought to be a development of the Second World War, but Lee provides details of the tactics and missions flown by his unit in this vital role.

AWESOME FUN
This is definately the book my daughter and I were looking for. I had started putting little slips of paper into my daughters lunch bag everyday with simple choice questions such as: toothbrush OR hairbrush and questions like would you rather have a million dollars OR a million friends??? Her friends at school would wait patiently everyday for her to get the paper out which we called : The famous lunchtime challenge. She and her friends really had a variety of reasons for their choices. Most of the questions were very thought provoking. It was a great way for the kids to spend their lunch period and many parents have said their kids loved it. We heard about this book on a radio station talk show and requested it at our local library and they got it for us. We had a hard time checking it out cause so many people were on the list to get it. After spending many hours going through it we found alot of the same questions I had asked during the school year. The authors have really done their homework on this one. Very many questions you would never think of. Overall this is a great book and a very fun time will be had by everyone who reads it. We use it while sitting around on our deck on saturday nights with a variety of ages and backgrounds you can really get some interested responses. Way to go Arthur and Paula!!!! This book is highly recommended to all.

Insight to your Fellow Employees
I gave my fellow employees the "OR" book as holiday gifts this past season. All were very excited about them and we began to read the choices out loud during our holiday party. As we got into it more and more, I realized what a bunch of... they were and decided to quit (just kidding)! We continue to bring the book out at lunch and get into some interesting discussions.
