Old Peter's Russian Tales
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (April, 1989)
Author: Arthur Ransome

Imaginative Tales for Kids
This was the first storybook that was ever read to me. The Book tells the story of an uncle that lives in the chill of Russia during the winter with his nephews. As days go by, he starts telling stories to them ...

These stories, are perfect for children ages 10 and up. They are written pretty much as fables, all of them having some kind of insight as to how people are. No violence is included in the text, though some is meant to be understood, as in Little Red Riding Hood.

Do get this book. Read it out loud to your young and see their reaction.

good analysis
I read this book after Schopenhauer's Fourfold Root after accidentally finding it in a library. It's a shame it costs so much, it's actually quite good. White basically presents Schopenhauer's arguments in the order Schopenhauer presents them, and proceeds to critique them in a fair and reasonable manner. While White puts holes in many of Schopenhauer's arguments, he also shows the merit in others, and the author's knowledge of contemporary physics and mathematics lends to the quality of the discussion towards the end of the book. While I would have to dig through notes to find them, I remember the author having a great many points which I found insightful into Schopenhauer's philosophy - he does not just present the arguments and give his critique in a mundane way like many Kant scholars, but instead allows Schopenhauer's text to remain contemporarily relevant and plausible in many areas, while not completely giving in to Schopenhauer's epistemology.

Great in-depth bible study outline
Our bible study group is working our way through at about a half chapter per hour meeting. We completed the first book - "Living God's Way" as our introductory program and now we are growing with "On to Maturity". As leader of the bible study, I encourage the class to read aloud all scripture references and openly discuss or testify of real life applications. Enjoy and be challenged!

The book helped me to find my true path in life.
Having been fired from a job which I loved (an editor) for writing about the TRUTH - I found that this book enabled me to redefine who I was and where I was going. Consequently, I just finished my first novel - a passion that has been a lifelong dream.

How a bad thing, can turn into a better positive opportunity
This book teaches you how you can overcome negative or bad things that happened and that makes you feel down or depressed. It shows that most of the time, when something happens, it can lead to a much better opportunity. So many inspiring examples are given and shows you how uplifting it can be reading about famous people that went through struggles before they became famous. Success-street is not easy-street! It is a highly recommended book, definetly worthwhile reading, especially when things don't look they are going your way.

Great book about very Special Person
I can't believe nobody reviewed this book so I'll take a crack at it. Brook Berringer was one of the greatest Nebraska quarterbacks ever and he was really considered a back up. Sadly his life was cut short in an airplane accident. I haven't talked to anyone here in Nebraska that doesnt know where they were when they heard, he had that much of an impact on everyone. The book does talk about his football days but I think more importantly it shows how he came to find God and how his faith helped him through trying times. It is a very moving book and it is very inspirational, it will bring a smile to your face and make your eyes well up in tears. I hope you'll read this book if only to learn how good of a man he was and maybe you'll find a little comfort in knowing God will always be there when you are ready to accept him.

The Ongoing Feast: Table Fellowship and Eschatology at Emmaus
Published in Paperback by Liturgical Press (May, 1994)
Authors: Arthur A., Jr. Just and Arthur A. Jus
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $19.05

Superb Exegetical Study of Pivotal NT Chapter
Luke 24 is one of my favorites, and Just does admirably well in tracing through table fellowship as an expression of eschatological kingdom.

The pattern that develops is sacramental and incarnational, centering of course on Christ. Thus, Christology is front and center and prominent.

The author finds five meal sequences in Luke's Gospel which he thus harmonizes and develops into its fullness in Jesus opening the eyes at the Emmaus meal.

Will benefit anyone serious about contemplating the meaning of the Easter event as well as Good Friday and communion koinonia today from the Lukan viewpoint.

Opium War Through Chinese Eyes

a balanced view
This book deserves five stars. Not because it is an exhaustive account of the first war but because it restores the balance. We have many English language texts on this subject but Arthur Waley, the distinguished sinologist, has become, with this slim volume, an extremely good historian. Using Chinese sources, occasionally adding clarifications from elsewhere, he has achieved a delightful, wistful, plaintive, penetrative and endlessly readable slim volume that finally enables the non-Chinese language reader to enter into what really motivated officials and simple, if middle class, Chinese people in the opium war - the seemingly unbridgable gulf that to this day divides East and West is washed away in this collection of notes from Commissioner Lin's diary and elsewhere, recording what it was like to be there at the time, the perplexity of the citizen and revealing the Chinese, through their thoughtful comments and opinions, their hopes and fears, as precisely like you and I. Read it.

Body plans, hox genes, and developmental biology
This work is a technical introduction to evolutionary developmental biology and introduces a very different perspective on evolution from what one is used to in the usual biology texts. In spite of its moderate difficulty, to a non-specialist, it is actually much clearer than simplified versions of Darwinism, and one can recommend it strongly as a perspective on the separate current to the Neo-Darwinian synthesis that has flowed from its nineteenth century origins parallel to Darwin. In the age of the Genome this dark side of the moon as to theoretical paradigms is coming into full view. The book starts with an exhortation to the reader "to believe that current evolutionary theory based on natural selection and adaptation in natural lineages is, at the very least, incomplete..." The author asks, did "evolution really have an early 'morphogenetic' phase during which most major body plans originated?" The difficulty of explaining the fact that no phylum-level body plans have arisen in the last 500 my becomes one of the starting points of the book. In general this perspective asks for the creative aspect of development beyond the destructive aspect of natural selection models. From there the book proceeds to the issues of cladism, body plans, genetic regulation, and many other topics in a comprehensive presentation. The crucial significance of all this for understanding evolution and extricating oneself from disinformation in the Darwin debate are obvious. Much of the boilerplate and blah-blah of the public discourse on evolution can be left behind in a fast getaway into some better fare than the current offerings. We are beginning to catch a glimpse of a new world of evolution, one that has been with us all along in embryo, as forseen by such biologists as Soren Lovtrup in Darwinism: Refutation of a Myth. That day is now arriving.
