Venice West: The Beat Generation in Southern California

The Beat Generation: Perception and Reality
"Here, down in Venice West, we have a new kind of beat, the real beat, the Beat Generation of the Future. I have called them by their true title, 'The Holy Barbarians,' and the report I have just finished making about them will be called by that name," said Lawrence Lipton to a British reporter. John Arthur Maynard, in his study of the Venice West beat community, writes of Lipton's 1959 book: "Its photo essay, verbatim conversations with 'real beatniks,' and handy glossary of hip jargon, made it a kind of do-it-yourself guide to the Beat Generation." It also provided thousands of Americans with an image of the Beats. And when Time, Life, Look, or ABC News wanted to do a beatnik story, they usually headed not for Greenwich Village, or the North Beach of San Francisco, but to Venice West in Los Angeles. Maynard's study of the Venice West bohemians (who didn't think of themselves as Beats) is a fascinating study of the people who created many of our perceptions of what Life's Paul O'Neil called "The Only Rebellion Around." The Venice community, writes Maynard, consisted of only two dozen or so writers and artists, of whom only one, poet Stuart Perkoff, was truly original. Lipton, says Maynard, tried to make the Venice Beats in his own image--his "holy barbarians" who will storm the gates of civilization "not with the weapons of war but with the songs and ikons of peace." Maynard provides brief biographies of the Venice West principals, including Lipton and Perkoff, and details the saga of the Venice West Cafe' Expresso (sic), where Perkoff had painted "Art is Love Is God" on the back wall. The last chapters chronicle the decline of the Venice West bohemian community in the 1960s and into the 70s. Most scholarly studies of the Beats focus on Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs--three very original writers. But they were perhaps too original for the news media of the 1950s. To understand America's perception of the Beats, we need to go to Venice West. John Maynard has allowed us to do just that.

Venom House

Author: Arthur William Upfield

Venom House
Set in Queensland, Bony's home state, the novel focuses on the disparity of character between 2 sisters and their brother. One sister is tougher than the majority of stockmen, the other as refined as the ladies of leisure in a city mansion. The brother is a virtual prisoner maintained in a purile state yet has great strength. They live with the housekeeper isolated on an island in a lagoon on which Venom House stands. Upfield uses the house's savage history to support his contention that the sins of the ancestors can be visited upon the living and Bony has to battle with his aboriginal fear of darkness to solve the succession of murders. The normal characters of solid local policeman and reliable bushman appear but this time the pretty "squatters" daughter expriences a quite different role.

Enthusiastic Beginner Says...
I found this book at my public library - and what a find. It uses beginner language to teach profession quality lessons. Buzzwords are taught at the beginning and mounds of practical advice are given throughout. I am filming a documentary for my parent's 40th wedding aniversary, and this is the guide I'll be using. Although outmoded, all the advice given is practical and applicable. Lost a star for having been written before the advent of digital camcorders and software editting.

Solid collection of essays
Though some of them are dated (inevitably), this is a solid collection of essays from Arthur C. Clarke. The book is divided into three sections: the first is concerned with general astronomy and physics texts; the second deals with communications satellites; the third is a somewhat miscellanous collection of essays. Those of the first type are always interesting, and every book of Clarke essays contains at least a handful of them. In addition to his encyclopedic knowledge of science, Clarke possesses that rare gift: the truly open mind. They often deal with extremely "far out" topics, many of which a lot of people would consider too fantastic to be dealing with (especially at the time the book was published!) But Clarke elicits that childlike sense of wonder in all his readers, as he is a master at explaining difficult concepts by analogy, and sheer force of writing. Much the same applies to the second group of essays, and, naturally, Clarke has a lot to say on the subject of communications satellites, as he, for all practical purposes, came up with the idea. This book, indeed, contains his famous original essay on the subject, Extraterrestrial Relays, for the first time in book form (this concept, and his subsequent work and extensive promotion of it, was the main reason Clarke was nominated for a Nobel Prize.) The third sections contains a somewhat random collection of pieces from the period, including his acceptance speech for winning the Kalinga Prize (for the popularization of science through writing, an award Clarke truly deserved), and a highly amusing piece called "Dear, Sir..." in which Clarke addresses the subject of fanmail, in a truly hilarous manner that shows his often overlooked sense of humor, and the level of his wit. Arthur C. Clarke published many, many books of essays during his remarkable career, and almost every single one of them is out of print. (Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds!, a mammoth collection of some of his best writings, was recently put out, and thankfully preserves many of them.) It is worth seeking these books out, as they are some of the best in the field.

Well Written Humour
I bought this book from not knowing a thing about it or what to expect!
This book is very well written, entertaining and crammed with laughter from start to finish.
A totally irreverant but gentle poke in the eye at the old Irish catholic way of life, even the modern ones could learn a thing or two! I just couldn't put it down.
This book is a must for anyone who's ever told or heard an Irish joke.
Wether you want an insight into Irish politics, religion or just to brush up on your 'one liners' this is a book for you.
A veritable treat of knowledge and laughter!

An excellent book
This is an excellent book that covers the internal affairs of Wellington's army in detail. The section on officers is especially informative, especially with regards to purchased commissions. Overall, a very good read.
