Postmodern Presence
The collection of essays in this book cover a wide range of topics and are very informative. Todd Gitlin's essay regarding modernism and postmodernism is very good for an historical -but broad account. Also, since the book covers a lot of territory (e.g. ranging from pomo-architecture to themed environements in malls)it helps one get a sense of the way postmodern ideas are infused throughout cultural practices. Some of the essays are reprints or versions of other works (e.g. Jameson's essay on p.m. architecture looks like part of his arguement in The Cultural Logic book). All in all I found it helpful.

The Prelude To It All
Despite the fact that this was Arthur's first published novel (came out in 1951), it is one of his most interesting in many ways. First, note the date I listed above of it's publication. That's right, it came out several years before Sputnik (much less Apollo) and yet still offers up numerous technical-drenched in-book conversations detailing the ins and outs of rockets and spaceships. Arthur describes an elaborate plan of how to build and execute a spaceship, many of which were taken into account in the eventual building of the first spaceships (ACC placed the first Moon landing in 1977, and thought he was being optimistic), and several of which we have yet to fulfill. An interesting thing to note is that he uses atomic technology for the spaceships.

Aside from what I already mentioned above, there are several othe prophetic things in this book. For example, Clarke mentions an array of satellites positioned above earth to be used for communications purposes (this is written by the man who invented the Com-Sat, after all), and this book was written in 1947!

Also, Clarke fans will notice that this lays the foundation for many of his later works. It is a Prelude To Space in more ways than one. For one thing, he mentions in the book how we will attempt to colonize the Moon, something that has been done in the majority of his subsequent novels. It makes one wonder why we haven't done this in real life. Also, in an ironic twist of fate, the novel ends with the earth at the turn of the century, in the year 2001! Truly amazing stuff.

This is a good story in and of itself, and it is interesting to go back and read older (pre-Apollo) books like this and see how close they were to the real thing. As interesting as it would have been to read a groundbreaking (back then) book as this at the time it first came out, it is just as interesting, if not more so, to read such a book now.

The Presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes
Published in Hardcover by Univ Pr of Kansas (October, 1988)
Author: Ari Arthur Hoogenboom
Amazon base price: $29.95
Used price: $16.80
Average review score:

This book provides a new interpretation on Hayes.
This book is told from and unbiased standpoint. The author does an excellent job ofjust giving the facts and not letting his opinion or anyone else's get in the way. The best example of this is in the first two chapters which talks about his campaign and then the disputed election, where to sum it up quickly, Hayes did not have the popular majority and won by 1 electoral vote. The book supplies me quotes and historical references from both Republican and Democrats and then gets into of the details of the election. So before I know all the details I already have evidence from both sides. Once one gets to the details it is simply facts no opinions. Hoogenboom does an extraordinary job giving facts and references from the time period and making and unbiased point of view. That is tolled form all sides and does not just concentrate on Hayes' side. The book remarkably managed to take and unbiased stance and still attack the widely held belief that Hayes was and ineffective leader and an inept politician. The author bring an entire new perspective on how to view Hayes. According to the American Presidency Series this book is supposed to present historians and the general public with interesting, scholarly assessments of Hayes' administration. Yet I found this book to be geared to the historians and the scholarly. The book is obviously being written for someone with good amount of intelligence. After reading this book one gains an entire new respect for the 19th President of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes. END

good, but very long on the Senator's ego.
Senator Vandenberg was a champion of bipartisan (or as he called it, nonpartisan) foreign policy during and after World War II until his death in 1951. However, the Roosevelt and Truman Administrations paid, what seems to me, a heavy price for his support. I've reached the conclusion, supported by other sources I've read, that the Senator had an ego bigger than Mt. Everest, and that, if his ego wasn't sated the way he thought it should have been, he would pick up his marbles, go home, and then throw pot-shots at the program that he disagreed with. It is this writer's opinion that, instead of considering how well his ego could be stroked, he should have been more concerned with the good of the country.

Covers a broad range of topics
Seems to cover a lot, from networking to graphics to XML & CGI. I was surprised that the chaper on CGI was so short, given that its not covered at all in Professional Perl also by Wrox press. Also the book was a lot shorter, but still long at 650 pages.

Interesting collection
A collection of short stories and essays (and even a poem) on the possibility of using a solar-sail as a mean of inter-planatary travel. Written by masters like Niven, Clark, Brin & Anderson, this book cannot be bad. The stories are interesting, and the book is not too long that the premise begins to become annoying. Maybe the theme is a bit forced at some points. All in all, one of many other good sci-fi collections.

Useful Handbook for Protein NMR study
The book is very complete, covers most of the field in protein NMR studies. The book is well organised, with plenty of figures to facilitate easy understanding of the subject. Overall, I find it is very helpful for anyone who will be interested in protein NMR research. I have actually seen quite a number of copies in a few NMR laboratories and I would recommand this book to all those who are looking for an complete introductory book in NMR and protein study.

Bibliotherapy Nugget from a Master
In earning his second doctorate, Arthur Lerner explores these three poets. Dr. Lerner's writing (essays, poems, and even personal letters) are marked by efficient phrasing and deep scholarship. Those in the adjunctive therapies of biblio- or poetry therapy must add this to their research library. A note: Dr. Lerner passed away from a stroke in April, 1998.

Some inaccuracies unanswered questions
I have done a considerable amount of research into the correct two-toned grays and blue - so called Opex blue -striping used on the 1938 20th Century Limited. I am, in fact, building a very accurate "O" scale model of this famous train. After a year's worth of research, Dupont custom mixed the appropriate colors for me in the newer Centari acrylic enamel as opposed to the old Dupont Duco lacquer and Dulux enamel formulas. After reviewing the NYC paint samples in the book under corrected light and comparing same with my paint samples, the two grays in the book are not accurate. For as long as I can remember, the blue striping applied to the '38 Century cars has been incorrectly referred to as "Opex" blue. The word "Opex", like Dupont's "Duco" was a trade name for Sherwin-Williams'lacquer, and was never an actual color designation. The blue striping color existed in a New York Central, Dupont formula, and this is what I used. Although it too is very subjective, I found the Pullman green sample in the book to be inaccurate. My Pullman green was mixed from the Pullman formula found in the old Great Northern files. Another area of considerable controversy lies in the proper color applications on the undercarraige of the Pullman heavyweight cars. Certain boxes and tanks and the steps were painted Pullman green, while the rest-except the trucks, which were sometimes painted Pullman green-was painted black. I wish Mr. Dubin would have given this area a definitive treatment. Otherwise, I feel the book is a very worthwhile reference, especially for modelers.
