Arthur Ewert: A Life for the Comintern
My grandfather wrote this book, so I'm probably a little partial. I only got a copy signed by him a short while back before he passed away, and I am thrilled at the way Ewert is described. From when he met his love, to when he met his fate. This book burrows deep into Comintern activity, and since the author worked for the CIA, is very true. It does, at times, say what Ewert was thinking, and it is doubtful that these feelings are correct. It gives an excellent definition of Ewert, but not much of anyone else. The book advances quickly, with Ewert going through his teens into his twentys in the first chapter. This is a good book for anyone who likes reading about spies (albiet it is not James Bond) and communism.

Inside the Private Fiedler
When I was 10 I went to a Pops Concert conducted by Fiedler in San Francisco and stood in line for his autograph. I expected a Burl Ives warm-fuzzy guy. What I got was a no-nonsense, brusk, get-away-kid-you-bother-me guy. But, I still loved him and his work. It is this paradox that Fiedler's daughter writes about in her (auto)biography. But, her life is no less interesting than her father's. What you get out of this book is an insight into the life of a great artist, fueled by the conflict at home between and among his wife and children, and between his art and the orchestra personnel and administration that sometimes seemed indifferent to him. I found the book exceptional.

An excellent introduction to Ford
I bought this as an introduction to Arthur Ford, and it serves that purpose admirably. It is a shortish volume published by the Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship, which Ford was instrumental in founding. It is, therefore, solidly pro-Ford -- but it doesn't ignore his personal flaws or the controversies surrounding his mediumship. It consists of passages from Ford's own writings as well as the writings of his closest associates. One particularly interesting part concerns an auto wreck in which Ford's sister and a friend were killed and he was left in a coma. Writing 25 years before anyone had heard the term "Near Death Experience," he described a classic NDE. In case you aren't familiar with Ford, he had nearly a 50-year career. Two of his main claims to fame were solving the riddle of the message Houdini had left for his wife ("Rosabelle, believe") and putting Bishop Pike in touch with his late son. I previously hadn't taken Ford seriously due to the controversy surrounding the Houdini episode and some of the other anti-Ford propaganda, but this book led me to do additional digging. Ford clearly seems to have had a great deal of genuine mediumistic ability (whatever that may be). He was also a complex individual who would make an interesting study even if he had been a complete fraud. I would recommend this as an excellent introduction to Ford (or a good summing up as to what he was all about, if you are already familiar with him).

Excellent Examples of Illustration
Arthur Rackham has been one of my biggest influences as an illustrator, and this book has been an excellent tool. Though the biography is somewhat unorderly, the illustrations shine through. Rackham has the been the inspiration of many great illustrators today-Zwerger, Hague, Froud, to name a few. A wonderful resource for aspiring artists.

The enigma of presence
The presence of an enigma, the enigma of presence: The Steinmetz book oscillates between these two poles, revealing one as it obscures the other, before begining the process over again. A clarifying agent -- yes, certainly; the culmination of decades of research -- no doubt. Authoritative, provocative, at times compelling, Steinmetz has returned to us the challenge of a poet and a man that we continue to face, facing ourselves as we do so. And this, I believe, is the final worth of this book. Mirror and lens, it reflects and refracts as much as we care to give into it; as much as we care to take the challenge of Rimbaud seriously for our place and our time.

A great account of a truly sadistic killer
If you want to know anything about the Genesee River Killings then this is the book you are after, it goes into the detail you want and leaves out nothing. A great read and a good reference point for those studying the serial killer genre. Highly recommended.

Arthur V. The Rest
A boy named Arthur had no idea he would change the course of history when he got off the train at Lower Stoatmumbling. Well, that's what happens in this fascinating book taking place in England. Now what's funny about this book is is that the porter at the station is a pig!! Near the end, a cricket team from Upper Stoatmumbling comes to play the few people that live in Lower Stoatmumbling. The Lower Stoatmumbling team was a very bad team until W.G. Grace entered. And as unpredictable as it may seem, W.G. Grace and the Lower Stoatmumbling won the game and plopped themselves in the middle of England history!

Lots of fun until the stickers run out!
We had lots of fun with this book until the stickers ran out. Then we used real band-aids. The book does a good job of teaching how to take care of a wound but in a fun way.

Arthur's Camp-Out
What a cute book! I think that most young children would enjoy this book even if they didn't like camping. It is adventurous and keeps you curious. I think that girls would especially like this book because it shows that girls can be campers too and that they don't have to be afraid of the animals or anything else for that matter! By reading this book I think that children would have less fear of camping.

Arthur's Family Vacation by Marc Brown
It's the last day of school and Arthur wants Buster to come with him on vacation instead of going to camp. Arthur's mom and dad say that he can't come so he's disappointed. Everybody packs their stuff and they load the inside of the car and the roof. Arthur's family gets to the hotel. They only have one tiny little room for all of them and the pool is smaller than D.W.'s bathtub, she says. They have problems on their vacation. First, only the parents enjoy their dinner, then they try to write postcards, but they haven't done anything yet. Next it rains. Arthur fixes their trip by planning out a whole bunch of fun stuff for the family. On Friday it stopped raining and it was the best day yet. They went to the beach. When they got home, Buster was already there. Arthur and Buster had missed each other, but Arthur had a great time with his family on vacation. This was a good book, but not the best I ever read. Marc Brown is one of my favorite authors. I'd recommend this book to a second or third grader who likes to watch the Arthur T.V. show.
