A Legacy to Remember
Anthony Arthur depicts the journey of the Bushmasters in WWII with great detail and passion. This book takes those of us from our everyday lives, and provides an oppurtunity to relive the incredible journey of the "American Jungle Warriors". This book includes pictures, and stories of men who died or survived the courageous journey of the Bushmasters. Arthur provides great visual tools and details to provide you with an understanding of the timeline and location of the Bushmaster's journey. I was almost in disbelief as a read the detailed descriptions and stories as to what these soldiers endured and the courage they displayed and the conditions of which they survived. Some of the stories in this book will leave you feeling disturbed. However, I feel that the horrors of what these men survived is necessary to grasps the extent of their courage and dedication to our country. This book is tribute to the men who served our country, and those that died for our country. I recommend this book to anyone who searches for an understanding and appreciation for our country's history.

`You're A Cold Fish, Harry.'
This is the story of a former mercenary named Harry Exton who is recruited by an old compadre into a `game' in which soldiers of fortune are sponsored by wealthy investors (called Voices, because they're only heard on the telephone) to fight it out gladiatorial style in a variety of settings, from the nighted English countryside, to an abandoned tenement, to the very streets of London. There's a lot of `dosh' to be made, but Harry doesn't like being boxed in. After a particularly deadly game, on a whim to test his Voice, he wonders aloud what would happen if he were to up and quit. That's enough for the Voices, and in the very next game Harry is set up for the kill. But Harry X is a lot more resourceful than they think...

This is a great thriller which is bookended by a wounded Harry telling his incredible story to the doctor treating him. While the concept sounds like Hard Target, forget that bit of fluff. This is an extremely well crafted bit of British noir. The action is completely believable (if surpassingly violent at times). There are no slow mo two gun jumps from the fireball here. This is hard hitting, driven plotboiler with a lace of cool. The characters are as hard boiled as they come, and the story culminates in a classic twist.

The art here is gritty and realistic - perfectly married to the writing. And is it just me or does Harry look a great deal like Sean Bean?

Buy this if you can get it - it delivers.

The Cambridge Companion to English Literature, 1500-1600

Another well-designed Cambridge Companion volume
For those wanting to delve into Shakespearean or Elizabethan literature, this is an excellent collection by respected scholars in each of the areas described in the Amz synopsis(above). Modern readers cannot imagine what a different significance there was 400 years ago for writing, for drama, for the creation of arts or for the grappling with politics or social policy. Kinney's volume is an excellent launching point for a literary reader to get perspective on the cultural constraints and opportunities that birthed Sidney, Spenser, Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, et al.

If your focus is primarily on Shakespeare, you may do as well to consider some of the other Cambridge Companions" volumes: either "...Companion to Shakespeare" or "...to Shakespeare Studies" or "...to Shakespeare on Stage." (or if pursuing other authors, to... Jonson, Spenser, etc.). In Kinney's volume, however, you find a broader inclusion of the wide-ranging forces impinging on the writing environment of the 1590s. Without having to consult separate volumes on Authorship or 16th century lyric or the patronage system, the reader finds here excellent scholarly surveys of fifteen crucial regions of writerly concern.

The authors' conclusions are generally well referenced through notes (end of each chapter) and provide helpful recommendations for further reading by topic.

Additionally, there are chronologies of the 16th century at the front of the book which help you place literary, social and political in temporal relations to each other. Overall, an excellent investment in your appreciation of the gestation and birth of renaissance English literature.

Camelot, The True Story - Carries a Magical Ring of Truth
This book was spellbinding and yet, utterly heart wrenching for me. I found Michael D. Miller's efforts in regressing 102 people back to the time of Camelot a compelling force as though he had written for me to read. Having stumbled upon the title of this book while on the internet I felt compelled to purchase it. (As a side note, I want to confide to all readers of this review that I checked all my local bookstores and libraries and could only locate this book through Amazon.com) What makes this story seem so "realistic" and "full of truth" is that the authors background seems doubtful that he would make something like this up. But beyond all that is the fact, that I, having gone through my own past-life regression can attest that all of his regressions with these people "ring true" within my experience. Sure, my doubtful and skeptical side wondered out loud how he manages to gather 102 people who all seem to have a connection to Camelot but as I began to think these thoughts the very next chapter answered my questions. Maybe Merlin was collaberating with the author on the writting of this book but it was a magical experience to read and "re-live" these experiences from an era of when time was enchanted and the dream of a perfect existence was realized. A time when love was pure.

Canada's glory : battles that forged a nation

Required Reading For Some Canadians
Today, in Canada, there are those who are wringing their hands at the site of Canadian troops in action in Afghanistan, anguishing over the fact that our soldiers are going from "peacekeepers" to - gasp - combat!

To this element of our society we should not be participating in this fashion in the war on terrorism but, instead, be utilized only as the distributors of "goodies" while other civilian elements engage in "dialogue" with the various terrorist networks around the world. To try to "understand" them and, perhaps, change them from wanton killers to stable members of society.

What these boneheads need to do is read this excellent account of our military's involvement in battles from the formation of our country in 1867, including the Boer War, WW I and WW II, right through to the Korean War. Those men were warriors in every sense of the word, not the namby-pamby collection of glorified Boy Scouts that some would like to see our army become.

Author Bishop, a WW II Spitfire pilot, and son of the famed WW I Canadian ace, William "Billy" Bishop, tells it like it was.

I'm sure our men and women now in Afghanistan will do us just as proud.
