Fascinating!
I musts first state, write and say that I had no prior knowledge that this book in question, i.e., The Heptameron (Penguin Classics)by Marguerite De Navarre, P.A. Chilton(Translator), that it even existed. However, I must say that I have been very pleasantly surprised. The story surrounds a plethora of storytellers; whom one by one tell stories of adventure, heartache et al; and are very easy to relate to (even though they were written almost 500 years ago and by doing so shows the authors brilliance since most books are only read by the most current audience). The translation is very well done and therefore the book is indeed a pleasure to read (since my knowledge of French is nonexistent at this time).

70-odd stories fashioned after Boccaccio's Decameron
Anyone interested in gender studies, especially wishing to understand the sexual relationships between spouses and lovers, the perceptions of what is acceptable, what is "masculine" or "feminine," would not only enjoy the reading, but gain some insight on Renaissance French culture. Along with the Decameron, Faerie Queene, Shakespeare's plays, and Orlando Furioso, this text is a necessary one for understanding the society at court during the Renaissance in Europe.

The Historic King Arthur: Authenticating the Celtic Hero of Post-Roman Britain
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (September, 1996)
Author: Frank D. Reno
Amazon base price: $42.50
Average review score:

A detailed exploration of the roots of Arthurian history
"The Historic King Arthur" is perhaps not a book suited for first-time travelers through the murky forests of Arthurian history, searching for the reality behind fifteen centuries of myths and tales. It might be best to first read one or more other works dealing with this great mystery before tackling Frank Reno's highly detailed, deep-delving study of the ancient sources that shed light upon the question. That way, the journey through the writings of Gildas and Nennius and Geoffrey of Monmouth and various scribes and poets will not be quite so daunting. But make no mistake about it, once some fundamental grounding in the basics of the Arthurian quest has been obtained, then "The Historic King Arthur" (and its sequel, "Historic Figures In the Arthurian Age") should be read carefully. Reno minutely examines each source (and most of them are to be found with numerous variations) to lay out his case for his solution to the central questions of the Arthurian mystery: Who was King Arthur? Where did he live? When did he live? Who were his enemies? What was his role in history? And what was really his name?

Reno acts as a guide in this journey in search of historical truth, explaining his methods and logic in evaluating the evidence, but he does not rigidly insist upon the absolute truth of his conclusions. Frequently, he explains that there are other reasonable answers to the questions than the one he favors. Sometimes, such as in his analysis of the locations of many of the battles fought by Arthur (as described in Reno's "Historic Figures In the Arthurian Era"), he concludes that no single "best" answer is really possible. At times, his explanations are complex and subtle to the point where the reader may have difficulty following the path Reno is laying out. That is perhaps a natural consequence of the type of evidence that must be used and of the detail in which it is presented. Usually, however, Reno returns to the same subject of investigation later in the book to again address the questions and to clarify his answers. Thus, attention to detail on the reader's part is required and patience must be exercised as the author slowly builds his case.

And what are Reno's answers to what above I termed the central questions? He believes that Arthur was of a Roman-British background, operating as a high king primarily in Wales and the adjacent midlands, although also in southern England and northern Gaul, from the middle of the Fifth Century AD through the early portion of the Sixth. Reno contends that many of Arthur's campaigns were waged not against Saxon hordes fresh from Germany, but against Saxons who had been settled in Britain for one or more generations, these "English" Saxons being in league with leaders and forces of native British. And Reno believes that "Arthur" was a man known otherwise to history as Ambrosius Aurelianus and as Riothamus and finally as Arthurex, not a name at all but an epithet connoting his status as a great leader.

I will not claim that I am yet wholly convinced of this "triad" equation of Ambrosius Aurelianus, Riothamus, and Arthur but, as the author himself points out, rejection of this total identity does not negate the validity of many parts of Reno's overall work. I found to be especial important Reno's conclusions regarding Cerdic, a "Saxon" king with a wholly Celtic name, and Cerdic's people, the West Saxons. If Reno is correct, our understanding of the Arthurian era must be substantially altered, with a consequence that the course of events becomes much more clear. I expect Reno's conclusions to be challenged - this is inevitable in a field where evidence is scant and subject to multiple interpretations - but at the very least he has provided us with a provocative, comprehensive portrait of man and era.

To my knowledge there is no other Arthurian study available to the general public that explores the ancient sources in such depth to provide answers to the old questions. If I might be critical of some peripheral features, I do wish that the index was somewhat more comprehensive and illuminating (given the complexity of the issues at hand, I found myself turning to the index again and again to go back to earlier points) and the maps, although numerous, sometimes lack the visual clarity that could have been achieved. Nonetheless, "The Historic King Arthur" and "Historic Figures In the Arthurian Era" are books that should be of great interest to anyone seriously interested in attempting to glimpse the real King Arthur.

A wonderful true life book of a man thought to be a mith.
This book took a time and a man, explained the truth of the time and captured my heart. Knowing there was King and how Mr. Reno went about proving his existance was interesting, intreeging, heart warming and fun. I can not wait for the next book!

Looking in the Right Direction
In the psychotherapy profession we spend so much time focusing on how therapists make therapy work. Bohart and Tallman, relying on numerous research studies, remind us that it is the client, not the therapist, who makes therapy work. Bohart and Tallman make clear we can do a more effective job as facilitors if we keep clear that the client, not our our techniques are what makes the difference. A great book, carefully researched, well-written and full of ideas worth thinking about. Phillip Ziegler, co-author of Recreating Partnership: A Solution-Oriented, Collaborative Approach to Couples Therapy

What Makes Therapy Work
The effectiveness of treatment has routinely been attributed to the technique a therapist uses or the therapist using the techniques. Witness so much emphasis on the model of therapy at continuing education programs and in graduate education. Finally, someone has gathered together evidence about what really makes therapy work--or better said, who. Researchers Art Bohart and Karen Tallman have compiled a compelling, readable, and practical summary of the research on the client's contribution to change in treatment. As noted above, the client is the single largest contributor to change in treatment--accounting for the largest percentage of the variance in treatment outcome.

Great, easy to read, fun and informative.
This was a great book. Haggerty helped me realize that even not living in a large city I can still put my dog into show biz. I haven't come across anything that wasn't answered in this book.

Lots of practical information and fun to read
I really enjoyed this book. It is very thorough and informative. The author even gives lists of most cat and dog breeds and what type of part the are usually cast in. Great training guide, shows exactly what you need to teach your pet for roles in commercials, print ads, tv, etc... Lists many organizations to get your dog `gigs'. There are even some funny stories about the author or famous animal thrown in, along with some humor!

Reprint Please
How sad that this book is out of print. It is a wonderful book that deals with the process of isolating colors. First it starts you with a simple project and then progresses within each study exercise that you do. My gray view finder from class has now seen better days, however, I will always carry one with me and used it even to capture items for my journaling.

This book uncovers the mystery of painting. For anyone who wants to grasp the basic concepts of color in a very visual manner. A CLASSIC! If I had found this book sooner, I would not have paid so much for art instruction.

Solid Book
This book gives solid and concrete advice on
how to be a good student. I recommend this book
and one more book: SURVEY OF 300 A+ STUDENTS.
You'll stay at the top of your classes with these two books.

A concise guide to the basics
When the time comes, I'll probably send my daughter off to college with Strunk and White's Elements of Style and this book. Although How to Study lacks the style and wit of the Elements of Style, it shares its brevity and concentration on the fundamentals of its topic.

The book is a revised version of an old study guide available to freshmen at the School of Business in the University of Chicago, and it covers an enormous amount of ground in its 55 pages. As advertised, the advice is gimmick free, stressing the need for the student's motivation, which should come from some larger goal for the student's life.

Despite its common sense approach, How to Study offers nuggets of solid information and tips in each chapter, such as writing down distractions before studying to free them from your mind, the proper uses of memorization, and test-taking strategies.

There are no miracles in this book, only basic information on how to go about studying, getting the most out of reading material, listening to a lecture, studying for an exam, and a constant insistence on active learning, all presented in a brief, no-nonsense manner. There are few books that offer this much good information for this price.

A Hundred Years of Philosophy

Best history
I've read numerous overview-type books on 20th century philosophy and this is the best history on the subject ever written. Passmore won Firsts in both English Literature and Philosophy when he was a student, an extraordinary feat, and an early indication of his talent in creating a scholarly history such as this.

The book focuses mainly on epistemology and metaphysics, with excellent sections on many modern movements such Wittgenstein and ordinary language philosophy, Logical Positivism and the philosophy of science, the contribution of modern logicians such as Quine and Tarski, Russel and Moore's influence, Whitehead and critical naturalism, and many other important topics.

Passmore's rich century...
This beauty is one of the best short-history of philosophies I've ever read. You end each chapter with a lot of hints and links for philosophical ideas and names, and a clear path through the discussions over the years. It will do for you what only a very good professor having a special talk with you would...It's a bit difficult to get, but is one of those books that are always very useful when you need a quick insight on a period you don't know that well: it will give you a picture inmediately, you'll feel lucky to have it in your shelf, in your hands, and in your memory...yes, I guess that you know now that this is a very much loved book for me. It concentrates on epistemology, touching some logic, and connects the 19th century developements with the beggining of phenomenology via Brentano, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, and Merleau Ponty...Perfect for unraveling the difficult mesh of "metaphysics" in the past century. Buy it, buy it, buy it...if you do not like it, blame me, or greet me otherwise.
